Cool little deck companies
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:19:08 PM »
That Roger thread spawned this question: What other cool little newish skate companies are out there that y'all like? Maybe regional; maybe no sponsored "pros," maybe interesting board shapes and quality wood.

Welcome Skateboards, for instance.

What other companies like that should I check out?

(PS - I don't give a fuck about t-shirt & flatbill companies; I'm talking about legit hardgoods companies here.)

no but seriously, there's like a bazillion. in every part of the world.
now a days it doesn't cost much to start a board brand up.
it just costs a lot to keep them going and relevant.

For example, I'm originally from New Hampshire, a state with no recognizable pros to the rest of the world. Its a tiny state in new england that nobody knows what goes on there west of new york.
and in my tiny little city in my tiny little home state, we had 4+ small brands like what you're talking about.

their numbers are too great.
if you find a good one, make like a built to spill album and keep it like a secret.

I wouldn't count those as little deck companies (well...maybe Welcome.)
if you can find a company's deck in more than the state the company is based out of (not counting mailorder), it aint that small.

blood wizard sure as shit makes it hard to track down their stuff though.

thanks for the tips guys; keep 'em coming

yeah I know there are a zillion little companies, so I guess I should have put more emphasis on cool, interesting, somehow unique or well-executed.  Just cause your homie mailed an AI file to a woodshop doesn't mean we need to know about it.

Lewis Cruise, which is a toronto area company.  Had one of their boards and it was really good.
Studio, not that small really but still cool.  Montreal based company.

well I was stating that if your company has grown to that level, that I personally wouldn't consider your game all that small anymore. I've know a couple of dudes that have started brands, and I've seen the work it takes to get it really moving to that level, and when you hit that size of distribution and are rolling that much of a branded machine through modern commerce of today, blah blah blah, im high, blah blah

its meant to be more of a compliment to those smaller than mega brands. I don't consider them small. small is what that brand is at the bottom of the wall at your shop that you can only find there, and the owner more often than not, is in the shop when you are dropping off the last shipment his paycheck at his other 2 jobs has afforded him.

Little company started by some friends of a friend (who post here I'm pretty sure). Awesome art direction.
