Drops of superglue on new shoes?
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:45:06 PM »
Hey, I've been skating for about 9 years, and I just heard about this. A skateboarding acquaintance of mine told me he puts drops of superglue on all of his new skate shoes, right around where they usually start tearing. I guess they last longer?

Does anyone else do this or anything similar? Any tips?

To clarify, just in case, I'm not talking about shoe goo. When he told me, I was imagining little pin-sized drops of superglue dotted over the "ollie area" of his shoes, etc.

If it really works, I'd like to start doing this to my Manchester Selects!

i started doing this recently, even on the bottom laces. greatly increases the lifespan of shoes.

you put it on the stitching, usually in the toebox area, or really wherever it will rip.  but nowadays alot of shoes have one piece toe caps, so you dont really have to worry about blowouts.

i couldnt see it mattering for your manchesters.  if you had some, say, Reynolds Classics, or something with a stitched toe cap, then maybe.

Oh, I see what you mean. Thanks.

I might have to try this out though. So you just drop a little on, or do you spread it? Haha, I'm probably getting way too concerned about the details. But, any specific way that works best?

you put it on the stitching

You can also put it where there's height difference, like the edge between a sewn toecap and the toebox. It's especially good on something that is single stitched, be it a vans wave or a swoosh or lakai flare, so it's not just flapping there after a couple days.

Tip - superglue is 99 cents at the 99 cent store.

I fully back this!! 99c store and you'll be happy with hour shoes much longer. I throw a little on the bottom laces and anywhere else I vet a lot of wear.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard mayo can take a lot of weird stains out. Pine sap is one that it can get out, ha.

I have been doing this forever. CVS has the best deal with their 2 packs for 1.99. usually i skate the shoes for a day so i can see where they are going to wear then put the glue over it. i find it works better if you do it in coats, especially for the flick spots. if  you throw a gob on there your flick is going to feel like its coming out off of plastic. i also put a little on the lace for the nollie flip.

i posted this awhile back in another thread, but here goes.

the superglue thing works great on stitching, shit won't even fray at all. you don't have to use a lot, but be aware, if you use it on anything other than black or white shoes, it may discolor the area where it's applied. so say you put it on some blazers in the ollie area where the toecap meets the lace stripe, you might end up with a little dark line where you apply if the shoes are the wrong color (may want to test first nahmeen?). usually, people use it to keep the shoes looking crispy, so if that's the case, the aesthetic is ruined. if not, go crazy cause it'll definitely extend the life of your shoes/laces by weeks, as it's also an anti-abrasive. if you drop it on the laces, be aware that it makes it HELLA hard to remove said laces if you choose to do so later. i'm pretty sure J-dubbs, biebel, et al have been doing this religiously for awhile too. and you can check their shoes in any footage for proof of how well it works.

I learned the superglue thing from some kids in Australia a while back.  Pure genius.  I don't really mind the slight discoloration since for years I rocked out skate shoes that seemed to be more shoe goo than actual shoe.

back in the day when money was tight/non existant apart from birthdays we used to steal puncture repair kits for ollie protection.. nice bit of rubber over the toe, laces and general ollie area would make them shoes last long but look pretty stinking.. then i saw some peeps just sorting out the stitching.. pretty much the best idea unless you have money to burn

super glue also works great to prevent griptape thumb, and as a bandage/barrier for small cuts and punctures, too. i always have some in my bag.

Ah, griptape thumb! This is the first time I've heard anyone call it that, but damn, it sucks. I'm assuming you mean the raw thumb you get after a session of throwing your board down before each "run." So you put some superglue on your thumb or what? I was thinking of just scraping that very top spot of my grip to be duller, since I don't think I need it to be grippy up there anyway.

How do you go for 9 years and not know about super glue? God you're fucking dumb. I've been doing that shit since day 1.

You're right. I'm so fucking dumb, I actually didn't even know what superglue was in any context until my friend mentioned that he puts it on his shoes. Congratulations BIC, for doing that since day one. I'm sure you needed it too, since you knew how to ollie before you even saw your first skateboard.
