What Differentiates Skate Punk from Punk?
« on: April 28, 2021, 11:09:41 AM »
Saw the wiki list and didn't know how it was decided.

Can anyone share their opinion on the identifiable characteristics of skate punk?

Do you agree with the list:

According to the wiki page, it's more poppy?

Reading that list took me back to jr hs. One day, I just traded all my old skate punk cds for Wu Tang albums and never looked back. "Blue Room" by Unwritten Law is good though, wish I kept that one.

It's all dependent if they were included in a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack.

I guess aside from Big Boys and Tales Of Terror, “skate punk” just sucks way harder than regular punk. Which also sucks a lot of the time.

probably should have been posted in the music section.

i'd say skatepunk is overall more juvenile, less politically charged, lyrics tend to be more humorous, the music is often more melodic, broader mix of influences like ska, reggae or funk, without going really deep on them. there is serious skatepunk concerned about domestic violence or being a poor fuck up, but skatepunk is less socially conscious than old school punk and also less competent about addressing these issues imo. sometimes skatepunk is pretty much only comedic, like nofx. early skatepunk bands sometimes had a crew/locals only/kooks out vibe not unlike later nyhc bands.

it's hard to pinpoint it down to a certain sound or lyrical content. when i hear so and so is a skatepunk band i have this image in my head of dudes looking like random california/orange county skaters/surfers playing mediocre no use for a name style melodic hardcore, some others might think of suicidal or jfa instead because they are ten years older than me.
it probably has a lot to do with location and if the band bases their image on being skaters or being connected to skateculture.

myself i was never the biggest fan of skate punk or skate rock. i think a lot of it is just a shittier version of other styles of punk, hardcore or rock that i like. i also feel like a dork listening to music about skating. i already probably nerd out about skating too much, there's no need for me to have music also revolve around it especially when most of it is pretty amateurish in a bad way. if i'm at a bowl and someone starts to play broken bottles by grindline the band i'm not mad about it, in fact that track is pretty sick, but i can only get down with that stuff in moderation.

actually would rather listen to a band like turnstile, which i guess is somewhat a good representation of 2010s/20s skatepunk, than any of the 90s manchild bands singing about poop and stds or most the almost toxic and right wing 80s kooks out/skate cholo bands.

In most of those bands on the list, e.g. Big Boys or JFA, the members skated and their album art and lyrics are full of skateboarding imagery. So...no mystery there. I have heard the term thrown around more loosely to include Circle Jerks or Minor Threat or whatever. In those cases, their fan scenes and the skate scene were so intermingled as to be hard to differentiate, particularly in places like suburban Southern California in the 80s.

I would think bands like Devo or The Adolescents are arguably skate punk--even if the members didn't skate (not sure about The Adolescents though), they were repped by a huge following of skateboarders. "Artier" (and earlier) bands like Wire or Television or The Screamers are comparatively light years removed from skateboarding and definitely aren't "skate punk," even if 1 in 3 skateboarders probably has an album of theirs.

I dunno. Band members skate or their fans have a huge crossover with skateboarders seems like a decent working definition.

Skate punk can be defined by many different eras. For me what comes to mind is:

80's style: Suicidal Tendencies, JFA, Agent Orange, The Faction

90's style: NOFX, NUFAN, Pennywise, etc.

I always thought of skate punk as bands like NOFX, pennywise, TSOL, suicide machines and the like. Maybe it stems from suicidal, but for the non-ska influenced bands, I feel like the guitar is generally shreddier and has a more metal treble sound like could be achieved thru an HSS or SG, or just a hot humbucker in general

Skate punk=  Suicidal Tendencies or US Bombs with a cheeky joke type of cheese.

Punk Rock depends on where you're at is earnest diy fuck you that's a bit tongue and cheek but has a heavy political message.

We can debate back and forth the subgenres but ultimately skate punk is a joke and true punk rock has balls

For me though I enjoy a heavier subgenre of crusty influence hardcore or equivalent to punk as fuck bands like fifteen, crimpshrine, Tilt,  Green Day, Pinhead Gunpowder, The Vindictives.

Something that has heart and merit that really speaks to me from an emotional perspective of love and passion. The days of hokey humor and cheeky lyrics it can be funny but in small doses.

I hate fat wreck as much as the next guy but they’ve had some heavy hitters on their roster, 88 fingers Louie, bullet treatment, paint it black, propagandhi, and d4. But that’s all I can think of, and the majority of their active bands are dog shit pop punk.

This is Skate punk. I played all the instruments and track the drums with a torn ACL in my right knee.

Long ago.

I saw Chuck Treece play all the instruments on skate tv. It was the moment I knew one person band was possible. I was going to learn all instruments. Do whatever I want.  No lessons just like my board I figured it out.

Life changing thing that show was.

My brother Pete can play all instruments. He can skate  My sister 21 years younger can too. She tours with her bands. She doesn't skate.

We all play some variety of hcp.

Skate Punk started for us with my cousin Bones. He was killed may 1st 1986 the day the self titled ep dropped. It's heavy metal wave boston but he was a punk. He was only 17 and he was about to leave the band to go to la. He got killed.
Everyone loved him. His mother my aunt was like my mom. She helped me pursue skate punk lifestyle against my father who wanted house painters.

He would say my kids are going to be devos. Sound familiar? The Devos.

Anyway his is her son playing the drums.

 https://youtu.be/nVVHVbmYFto

He had already tracked the lp. We Are Not Amused before he was killed.
The fus was better but it's pretty good.

Skate tv. Suburbia.. steve frickin olson. He was the hero too back in the 80. Alva. Phelps was a legend.

Reality is a bitch.

Don't drink drive your kids will become Devos
