Yeah, Fenriz is probably the single best thing about black metal ever!
I don't even really like the genre but this is one of the best things on the internet, dude definitely knows his music

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

i think that darkthrone has done justice to every type of metal they have played. i don’t think they have any bad material

I really only listened to the "trinity." Blaze, Funeral Moon, and Transylvanian Hunger were great. I think I've dabbled in Sardonic Wrath a bit, but I still default to those 3 for some reason.

What's a good place to start as far as their crustier / punk stuff goes?

I really dig Sardonic Wrath, especially it's production.  You should check out Panzerfaust as well as far as the early stuff goes.  but for the later:

the new album they just put out, Old Star, is also really good

I'm going to peep this stuff this week. Thanks for the heads up.

There is a really cool album by this Dutch band called "An Autumn For Crippled Children." Not exactly the same kind of stuff as this older 2nd wave black metal. But just well done, melodic kind of prettier sounding stuff. I think it's easily comparable to Deafheaven. But it's not bad and worth checking out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM-aXFuR9P8

There are some really great tracks on this album. The second song "The Woods Are On Fire" is really great.

They were on heavy rotation in my early 20s... was super into atmospheric black metal.

This track:

Was huge on velvet cacoon, their back story is so random. Their drummer apparently committed suicide, so they used a drum machine on this record

dude YES! lost was a grreat album. i've never met another skater who liked AAFCC. feel like few metal peeps even know about em. lost, try not to destroy, and long goodbye were the only albums of theirs i listened to heavily but i think they put a new album out recently.

i'm loving this velvet cacoon song rules. i'm going to have to dive deeper into this stuff and their back story.

my bestfriend actually has a really cool band you might be into if you're into weirder "extreme music." it's called John Frum. My friend sings for them (he was the vocalist of The Faceless back before everyone slowly started quitting). John Frum is some pretty crazy, dissonant, and noisy shit. the bassist of dillinger escape plan is also in the band wih him. their full length is damn good.

That was pretty sick. Great drummer. Relapse put out a bunch of ringworm (hands down favorite band) records...

hellhammer (which i think became bathory) is pretty sick. Got that raw sound, even though i think i read they were embarrassed by these early releases? Not sure why

WIth alot of Black Metal bands that there's a seamless characteristic fast heavy frantic shrieks but definitely raw and I admire that about it's earlier inceptions. Now to shoegaze and other questionable emo rappy douchey metal DH PTV DWP, I hate as they combine all the wrong elements and should be burned in the trash.

As of recently I have only found a handful of labels and bands that really encapsulate that 90's raw energy and frantic screams that remind me of early Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Celtic Frost, Immortal.

Which leads me to my recommendation of Rhinocevs Label anything they do is amazing,

This band out of Canada, Akitsa, definitely fits the raw black metal sound ..

Those Rhinocervs compilation were compilations of various bands under the Rhinocervs label. Tukkaria raw to the rapine, odor of dust and rot https://youtu.be/TsizWB6GK3Q

https://youtu.be/Odq0NPXxpws

https://youtu.be/4aQADy2lXHI

https://youtu.be/cJiqo4E1mes

https://youtu.be/swXhP1Jjihc

I like the unique style and shrieks of anguish as it’s not about lyrical content it is about atmospheric and to me I like the doom aspect.

Best album of his, IMO. This one came out at the same time and was a little slower and more atmospheric, with synth work from Puissance.

Bone Awl got mentioned a ways back, but I have had this one in heavy rotation since it got reissued not too long ago:
