Scooter Epidemic
« on: March 18, 2012, 03:21:54 PM »
I'm putting this in UWTB because it affects skaters.  What is the deal with every skatepark having a million scooter kids now?  It's actually getting way worse.  Today we were outnumbered like 20 to 5.  Where the fuck are they getting the idea that scooters are so cool?  It's like no kids want to skateboard anymore.

Is it gonna get to the point where parks are just for scooter kids?  Shit is getting ridiculous.  Even if they're not in the way the sheer amount of them kills the sesh.  I don't feel like arguing with 20 parents either, as there's no real law to keep them out.  Shit sucks.  Soon Weezy and Bieber are gonna rep scooters and we'll be done for, forced to skate shitty boxes in a driveway or parking lot somewhere.

Son: Mommy! Mommy!

Mommy: What is it dear?

Son: I want a skateboard.

Mommy: Skateboarding is dangerous dear, look what happened to Lennie Kirk. How about a nice scooter instead?

Son: Do I have to wear a pink shirt?

Mommy: No dear.

Son: Well, I guess I'll try it then.

That's a real issue actually. My skatepark is also infested, especially on weekends. I feel like being in a nursery, fuck.
I talked about it with the guy who works at the skatepark, and told me that nowadays, kids start skating but find it too difficult and quit... for scooter. Our generation is fucked up, already knew it, and its gonna be worse in a near future

I throw elbows, fight with parents, talk shit, smoke pot by their kids. They usually leave soon after. Handle your shit,

This.  So many fucking times.  Warm up and go, or go at non peak hours.  Pretty fucking easy solution.  It's not like they're going anywhere.

I skate street too, but sometimes you'd rather skate an awesome park instead of a shitty manny pad behind the grocery store by yourself.  Thanks for the constructive criticism though!  Maybe I will just forget that the park we fought for years to get exists...

I don't even see why they're at skateparks. Skateboarding is frowned upon on the streets, and last time I checked, I've never seen a 'No Scootering' sign up anywhere.

i can see both sides of this. yes scooter kids arent going anywhere and skating street is alot more raw than a park sesh, but at the same time theres days where you just wanna kick it at the park and work on some shit or just skate by yourself when you're bored. its all about findin the right times to go. i have a park similar to yours and on certain days there's scooter madness but if you figure out the peak hours for that shit youll know when you can go there when traffics at a minimum.

i think its good to have a nice balance of street and park skating. learn shit in the parks & get buck with it in the streets. acting like skating parks is lame is some wannabe elitism shit, but if you rely too much on skating parks you're missing out on the adventurousness of skateboarding.

I starting making some anti scooter stickers in PSD that I was going to stick around my local and give them out to my homies but then I thought the idea was lame.

At my local park there is a sign that says "No scooters or caster boards inside the park". It sucks that the rule is never enforced.

one good thing about scooter kids... watching them do a tailwhip to shinner, getting a shinner from a scooter must really hurt.

On the bright side my local is thinking about putting up no scooter/rollerblade signs, but the council never do anything so that probably wont happen.

Trends come and go. This fad will be over soon. The way I always saw it though, was that scooters are just BMX training. The only kids I see using a scooter are too little to lift up a bike and the skills are probably pretty cognate. BMXing is the true epidemic and somehow everyone acts cool with them even though they destroy spots like no others.

Once I was at the skate park and they were three kids that jumped out the van and the biggest/oldest was the first one hurt in a few seconds. I didn't know if to laugh or just watch.

just this last sunday, i saw a kid probably about 10, walk in the skatepark, and break his wrist on a 2 foot QP, his whole skate experience was less than 5minutes...its sucks that he got hurt, but he shouldnt have been there in the first place...

i kind of think skaters should do something so parents learn that skateparks aren't playgrounds...

Yeah, we already do. Crashing into little kids, smoking weed, drinking, tagging. If you go to a good skatepark all these things happen on the reg there, and most parents wont just let their kids run around there. Unless you're in the hood, then there's nothing you can do, the skatepark is the playground.
