Inguinal hernia
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:30:11 PM »
So thursday I'm going to get surgery on my Inguinal hernia.

Does anybody had experience with this?
Does it take a long time before you can skate again?

I had a inguinal hernia repaired 2 years ago. I think it all depends on the type of surgery as I've heard reports of people being fairly fine and dandy (ie. back at work) within a week or two. I reckon skating would take a little longer than that if you took it easy, but who knows.

My experience was a little different. For the first week or two after the operation I could barely walk (my doctor gave me 3 months off work), skating was out of the question. After that, I felt really fragile and sore for a couple of months. Once it really settled down, I began rolling around a little and slowly got back into it. During this time period I would be out and about, exercising as much as I could because I was sick of sitting around the house.

I don't want to bum you out, but my advice is to take it as easy as you can, I just found out my hernia has recently come back and it bums me out thinking about getting the same shitty operation and going through the recovery again. I'm wondering if I maybe didn't take my recovery seriously enough immediately after the operation and didn't let things heal up properly. As it stands, I can barely skate at the moment because it feels like shit and I'll have months to wait before my operation.

I guess you're getting your surgery today, so I hope it doesn't suck too much. Ask me any questions you like although I can't remember things in too much detail. I'm interested to hear how you get on since I'm back on the hernia boat.

I'll end with something positive: take it easy and don't rush things during your recovery. If you start to feel shitty, sit down. When it heals up, you feel great. In regards to skating - I found that it really helped me appreciate just cruising around, I had fun not stressing about tricks for a little bit.

Thank you for the story Galletly. You seem to have suffered a lot. Was your inguinal hernia painfull and in a early stage?
I had mine for almost 2 years but it wasn't painful.

I just got out of hospital and walking hurts, but I'm not miserable or something. I think I chose the right month to recover because november is the shitiest month of all here in Holland.

The nurse said that I shouldn't have sex or masturbate for 2 weeks! The girl I like comes back from paris in 3 days. So that would be shitty.

They made 3 holes with my operation. One in my belly button to air it up, one on my side and one above were my hernia was. they put in a little strap or something to keep it in place.

While I'm typing I notice I type like a 8-year old but I'm still a little high on morfine.

Yeah, mine always hurt a bit. I think you'll make a quick recovery due to the keyhole surgery. For some reason I got a 4 inch scar for my trouble. Now it seems to be back and because the area suffered the trauma of the operation, it hurts often. Just got to wait for an appointment with a specialist to find out what happens next. That all makes it seem quite dramatic but it's no more troublesome that having a sore knee or something.

Glad to hear your operation went well. Sucks about the girl though!

This topic is old but I figured I would just add onto it instead of creating a new thread. Felt like my hip was popping outta place after hittn spots all day- stayed off it for a while, skated a few times and things didn't feel right so I went to the doc. He tells me I have inguinal hernia, I get the surgery on in two days, super excited to get it done. Doc told me a to treat it like a sprained ankle as I am getting the 3 holes deal as well. How long did it take before you were skating 100% again ?
