If you look at living specimen, black coral and certain sponges can become over thousands of years old, but actual animals would be koi fish, whales and certain turtoises with around 200

Why is it that more simple organisms like corals and sponges can  last so long? How do they avoid cell degradation? Do they have more regenerative powers than mammals, reptiles etc.?
