Why is it that more simple organisms like corals and sponges can last so long? How do they avoid cell degradation? Do they have more regenerative powers than mammals, reptiles etc.?
I can't remember what it's called, but I think there is a genetic code in our DNA that basically programs us to die after we reproduce. I read an article about in a few years ago, but have no idea what I did with it, they were trying to find a way to make people live longer by altering that gene. Maybe, certain species of those simpler things tend to live longer because they're asexual and have no program to die after leaving a reproducible age range? Also, since our bodies are more complicated, there are way more processes going on in our bodies and with all the environmental toxins that are all over the place, it makes it even harder to maintain. With that said, maybe its easier for organisms in the ocean, just because they're in the ocean...
