i don't think so.. reds hold up really well (i.e. at least half as long as the twice-as-expensive swiss) and very rarely am i standing on my skateboard thinking "damn, i wish my bearings would spin faster". i've gone from reds to swiss to super swiss back to reds over 10 or so years. god damned if i'd buy anything other than bones, though.

ceramics too, just depends on your cash flow situation. i've had ceramics for years and they are still kicking ass.

I couldn't believe the price difference when I was buying bearings yesterday.I've been skating whatever my friend sells me for the last 5 years, never noticed a difference in anyrhing.

ive had one really shitty pair of swiss that ended up falling apart on me. then again, the pair im riding at the moment have lasted me over two years and when i got them, from a friend, they were rusty as all hell from being on a board that was left outside in the rain and shit. i scrubbed em and cleaned em up and they have been the best bearings ive ever owned. worth it

They are worth it. Reds last a couple months before half of them are already broken but Swiss can last for years.

swiss really is the only way to go. you will go through multiple sets of reds in the time you go through one pair of swiss. think of it like that if you don't really want to spend the money

agreed

i've mentioned this numerous times on here but for me the breakdown is

reds - 3-6 months
swiss - 6 months to a year
ceramics - 3 years and still going strong

if you do the math on the price the ceramics are for me, by far the cheapest option. but i'm down for any of their bearings.

i don't, and on mines the shield are in metal (they were in an old store stock since 1999-2000)

i think any citrus cleaner is good. i use the same stuff that i got for my mountain bike.

the ceramics are wierd when it comes to cleaning. at frist i thought i'd have to clean them all the time and after a few months they all pretty much locked up at the same time so i cleaned them. but each time they need cleaning after the first increases so the next time i had to clean was like a year latter and now it's been over a year.

i normaly pop the shields on any other, but i might keep them on my new swiss

pre lube or shred them straght out of the box?

With age, I've finally started tinkering and caring about my set up......I got Swiss and clean em....but honestly, if I can get reds for cost and not get my hands dirty?....

Before the super reds I would get anything, flip hkds were surprisingly good, toy machine bearings were okay, too.

i use paint thinner. i always take the shields and crowns off and basically just have the rings/ball bearings that i put into the cleaning unit. it works fine from my experience but using an old tin can is just as fine.

My last set of swiss lasted me 2 years, they still had life I just retired them ccause I was setting up a whole new complete at the same time. I went with the super reds this time and they are coming up on a year now and still rolling without being cleaned

I've had some cheapy bearings for the past year and a half and they're absolutely fine, cost like a tenner, they're still spinning and riding great while I watch my mates bones reds disintegrate around me, weird

Swiss will last years if you clean them. The bones cleaning thing works really well. For cleaner, go to a bike shop and buy a good degreaser.

99% isopropyl alcohol also works well as a cleaner. I've only seen it at Safeway or Safeway-owned supermarkets (most guys sell the 92%). Skate bearings use oil instead of grease so you don't really need anything expensive or heavy duty.
