Terrible Anti Hero Ad

HOWEVER, In an interesting side note I meet the young girl - now a 40 year old peace advocate -  from this photograph at work. Her name is Kim Phuc (funny last name I know) and she is an incredible person with a crazy life story. RESPECT.

Dont like making fun using a photo of someone clearly suffering, especially if you dont know if they are ok with it. More because i know the full story behind that photo and i cant laugh.

The cover of the rage against is not making fun through the picture and if i am not mistaken they are a strongly political band even though they are mainstream and suck ass. So the cover is part of the anti-system anti-war policy they have? Yeah its different.

it's immature shock value, don't overthink it. Skateboarding has as much to do with politics as it does energy drinks. It's all one big sellout, anti hero just tries harder than others to not look like a sellout. This ad being the result of trying to hard.

skateboarding might not have much to do with politics but skate art has to do with art.  i'm not even talking about this particular ad either but i'm sure if you talked to most artists who work in skateboarding (graphics, ads whatever) they take their art seriously to some degree.  skateboarding is one commercial outlet where art has a chance to be more subversive and edgy (maybe less and less, but it's still there).  at the end of the day yeah, it's just skateboards, but when you look back at skate art history there's a treasure trove of interesting things going on

I don't understand why people think it's supposed to be funny in the first place.  It's Anti-Hero (the little guys) vs. the soldiers (the big, authoritarian guys).  It's the same style Anti-Hero (note the name) has always had.  They're the Travis Bickle of skateboarding in image.  I would honestly love to watch Salo with some of you guys.  We shouldn't be discussing whether or not it's offensive (it's supposed to be), we should be discussing whether or not it's effective (this thread proves it is).  Photoshopping dicks in Berra's mouth (don't stop) is fine, but subverting an iconic image for the umpteenth time is offensive?
