Finally someone brings The Crucifucks into the conversation.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

I didn't know my thread about a d-list rockstar having a melt down would make it to 4 pages and then turn into a discussion about what "real punk" is. Thank you, guys.

Punk is many things to many different people. Punk started in America by proto - punk bands like New York Dolls,  The Stooges, MC5, Death (original not the metal band), Rocket from the Tombs, Rubber City Rebels etc... later The Rmones took up the banter, toured England where many folks like Johnny Rotten saw them and later stated bands and the rest is history.

I am tired of the debate about who and who isn't punk, in 1985 my friends and I got made fun, looked down on and sometimes jumped for listening to anything that wasn't mainstream, didn't matter if it was Crass, Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, The Cure, Souxie and the Banshees, Bauhaus etc... To me it was all punk the rest was just labels....

I still go to a lot of shows in houses here in Sacramento, lots of great bands some doing sounds of old some making up their own way, it's all good and I enjoy it.

No fuck off!!

The worst part of punk rock is the scene and all the people trying to be the most punk. Its very ironic that a movement that centers around the concept of anarchy has so many unspoken rules

Gipper is so clued out he thinks punk is a scene based on the concept of anarchy.

Only small segments of punk are into anarchy, punk is everything from really left wing to really right wing. You should explore a little more before making blanket statements like this.

Who gives a shit? That's my real point. Don't worry about how widely applicable my joke about the irony is, worry about how it is stupid to get into arguments about what "real punk" is.

This guy posted a whole show Embrace did at the 9:30 Club in D.C. from 86' on you tube. Got me psyched - guess I'll share here given how this thread turned out.

Out of Minor Threat, Teen Idols, Embrace and Fugazi - Embrace is my favorite Ian MacKaye creation.

Max Schaaf skated to Embrace in Roll Forever - love this part.

Also - a big part of what "punk" is to you depends on where you're from in the country. Your environment really shaped your scene and impacted it. These two books really helped to put a lot of things into perspective for me - since I was not alive for the time period when punk was red hot.

I know what real punk is, its fucking stupid, horrible music that's really fun to see live when you're half in the bag.

I think what Gipper is trying to say (earlier) is that it's ironic (& hypocritical ) that a music genre (punk) that seems to advocate "individuality" and free thought, has so many unwritten rules.

I think that's the general point he was making. I agree with that sentiment

That makes more sense, if he had written it that way I would agree, being older I am glad I don't have to worry about all the stupid rules, I am just one of the old guys at the show now, I could wear a suit and tie and no one would care.

Gipper might have meant that, but is always too ineloquent to get his point across. He types with his fists.

Thank you Able, that's pretty much what I was saying, I'm glad we can all agree on it. Though you also raise a point that shit like that always seems stupid when you get older. Kids love and need that shit
