Austin Stephens appreciation
« on: November 29, 2006, 06:26:42 AM »
It is only untill old age that more skaters realize noone cares about hammers, jummping stairs and rails are just too easy and at the same time very risky. The truth is guys like danny brady, nick jensen, austin stephens, now josh harmony zach lyons and jeremie decline show skateboarding is an aesthetic art form.  Like cuirc de sole if you will , its about looking natural, comfortbel and being creative that show the maturity behind true skateboarding. Stephens and harmony by far had the best parts in suffer, i actually prefered stephens whom i think was incorporating a lot of bradys styles, trick selection (does matter) layback varial flips, fackie tre, ect.

you should take stephens out, and put chris cole in...  talk about artsy fartsy skating, no hammers, and a bradyesque steeze!

I just saw the video and thought Austin's part was better than I expected. Kids think that Toy has to be a full on hammer company, but that team has alot of roots in all types of skating. I wasn't blown away that his part wasnt' all stairs and rails.

I can't reply to this original post. Don't speak of Stephens or Harmony in the same breath as Brady or Jensen. Please don't. And don't give me this trip that two Toy riders are miles ahead of everyone else because their style or approach. Have you seen a Girl video lately? How about that Lakai vid coming up? It's going to be chock full of guys who shun rails and steps for the 'original' style of skating that you're speaking of. Pashaw.

I don't think liking Austin Stephens makes you more mature. Its cute that you try and play that card, but it just doesn't apply in this situation.

Dude, your still wrong.  You said "Toy machine has never been a hammer company." Look, its right there in the purple box above this text. See it? Yet Welcome to Hell, a toy machine video, is considered one of the definitive handrail/gap/ gnarly skating videos. Live and heavy metal weren't super gnarly, but you just made a rediculous statement saying toy machine never was one. Fact is they were and are the epitome of a hammer company.

In Welcome to hell Jamie Thomas does some big stuff but the video also has parts by Elissa Steamer, Satva leung, Donny Barley, its not exactly a "hammer" video like the Zero video were. It represents pretty much every aspect of modern street skating.

Its some gnar shit. Elissa's part ends with her eating shit hard on a nollie lipslide on a big ass ledge. Barley gets gnar too. Maldonado and Templeton shred the big shit too. The fast editing and pretty much entire format was taken by zero and used in later videos. This predates the hammer format we see today, but it pretty much sewed the seeds for the entire thing.
