I saw you talking shit in the Keenan thread--you trying to cozy up now?

Regarding footage just like any big project there's always a bunch that doesn't make the final cut. The good stuff is in the PS bonus footage.

How about reading the thread before you post. The part was never deleted and some clips made the FF part.

Chomp and Tiltmode vids are good no doubt but you're delusional if you think they generate anything near the sales of vids like FF and Pretty Sweet.

That's the problem with Slap. People posting on here think they represent market forces but the purchasing power is with the middle school mall demographic.
It's sort of startling how you don't see the bigger picture as an artist (art director here).  If you are catering only to what is NOW (middle school mall demo) and unable to anticipate/help steer towards what is NEXT, you're a hack.  Anyone can do that.  Also, if you care more about selling to your largest sales demographic without satisfying your core fanbase (lifers), you're a hack.  You are supposed to be able to carry the vibe over from the inspirational projects (Chomp etc) to the mass audience.  There have been numerous posts from you suggesting that your priorities as a professional creative are out of line with where they should be.

And why is that? Theres really no excuse for editting the video that way. It effects the perception of the brand when you do something like that and over time that effects who wants to ride for the company and who wants to buy the stuff they make. I dont have a problem with intense video productions if thats what a company is about but leaving out whole chunks of higher quality footage? Lame lens decisions? Not really making a quality video with the raw material available? Rubbing people the wrong way with no payoff at the end? Thats all on you.

The thing you will NEVER realize Ty is that most core skaters, the people you should care about, don't give two shits about the quality of footage or tricks. We just want to see our favorite skaters skating. Period.

You mean all the people here asking for PMs every time a new video is released?

these kids dont buy videos. its people like me whos mom drove them to the skateshop to buy yeah right when they were this kids age and still called the skate shop for a week straight asking "do you guys have pretty sweet yet?". we have the purchasing power when it comes to videos. the people who waste hours of their life on slap discussing skate videos in such detail are the ones buying videos, not the middle school mall kids couldnt give two shits about the filming and editiing and song selection and all the other bullshit that goes into a major video. i dont have the stats in front of me, but id be pretty surprised to find out that im wrong.

Yeah dude. We could drive to a skateshop and pay for videos. I dont email my friends for torrent of the latest video. Those mall demographic save their loonies for shakejunt/supreme shirt/hat, wayfarers and Sb's. Mostly has short attention span to even sit for a video.

Carroll say he has the missing MJ part.

That part has a lot more mystique unseen. People will be underwhelmed, the best clips are in his FF part.
[close]

The worst thing about this isn't that you pulled such a dick move, the worst thing is that you put yourself and your 'vision' ahead of the talent actually doing the work. That you grudgingly cherry-picked the best parts makes it worse.

It's not easy putting films together, and shit gets heated. But you gotta realise that without the skaters, you have no video. Your attitude towards it all kind of shows that your work is about you, not the skating. That's sad, and it will hurt your career in the long run.

In short - you need skaters, they don't need you.
[close]

Ok, thats just wrong, if people really didnt need editors everyone wouldve loved extremely sorry. You need both for something good to happen. Theres nothing wrong with having a "vision" for what a video should look like because all the best videos usually have a solid concept but its another thing to not follow through with your vision and not make all that misery worth it for everybody involved.

You're right to a point, but putting a filmer/editor ahead of the skaters is putting the cart in front of the horse. Ty's ego getting in the way of MJ's hard work is twisted and the reaction of Carroll really says a lot.

I like that Ty has raised the bar of skate filming, it just seems that it's come at a pretty high cost. Put it this way - would you rather the world had Ty's filming or MJ's skating? The answer is pretty easy to me and I'm a film nerd who loves seeing HD skating.

I actually give Ty a lot of credit for coming on here and facing his critics.

That being said, some of the shit you're saying is whack as hell. Based on your logic you must think Bieber is a great artist because he sells a lot of records and is appealing to the "young demographic that sells product"? You can talk all you want about sales records that PS and FF set, but I think I speak for a lot of us when I say the world wants another Tilt Mode or Chomp video more than they want another FF. And I buy a lot of product, so my opinion must mean something to you.

You seem to be contradicting/ignoring a lot of what you said in your Jenkem interview a few months back.

To suggest that us "core" older dudes are irrelevant in the skateboarding market is a joke. If this is true, how has Anti-Hero managed to stay in business for so long? Funny, I don't remember them putting out a big-budget video to help sell product?

Would I like to see a balls-to-the-wall Stranger or Gerwer part, or a team video? Absofuckinglutely, but I buy Anti-Hero boards because they do everything on their own terms. Not because some big shot filmmaker sticks an expensive camera in their face and says "This is the future of skateboarding. Deal with it!" And those dudes are loyal to a fault.

Yeah 'cause dudes are getting kicked off left and right from Girl/Choc for not producing.

Well can you elaborate on why Pops was recently removed from the Chocolate website?

I mean at this point I understand why he may have gotten kicked off and I give you credit if you really did try to get him involved in PS, but what happened exactly?

Was Mouse marketed toward the middle school mall demographic? Or did Rickoo & Spike just set out to make the best quality, most tasteful video possible, according to their aesthetic judgement, without much concern for how "the market" would respond?

Of course that was a different era--simpler, more naive. There's so much more at stake now. The rich need to get richer.

That internetworth meter is way off.

It's not exactly a statement from Merril Lynch, but if anything these are likely to be lowball estimates. Over the past 20 years, Rickoo has skimmed from every piece of Girl, Chocolate & 4 Star piece sold. Plus Lakai money. Not to mention, once you have dough, it opens up all kinds of other revenue streams--stocks & bonds, mutuals & index funds, real estate flippage, etc. He may not have $40m in the bank but when you consider the equity value of brands in which he's a stakeholder, I'd be shocked if he was worth under $45m.
