I skated a 9 on 149's about two and a half years ago. Not too awkward. I wouldn't go any wider than that though.

As wide as you want. Whatever floats your boat.

149's are 8.5 inches, if that helps.

Well I asked because I have a 9 with 169s and it feels great but its a cruiser style, and I was looking to get something bigger than and 8.5 for my next board and I really don't want to have to buy more trucks so I was curious if anyone has ever had bigger than and 8.5 and used 149s and if it was awkward.

149's on a 9.12" Cab Hot Rod was a perfect big pool board setup I had a few years ago.
159's are a little better, but more clunkier and bulky/heavy too.
On big decks at the front and back trucks the contour usually makes a board smaller than it's widest advertised size anyhow.

149's will be fine for you, do it up. If anything add 3 washers or so on the inside of the hanger side on your axles.
Good luck.
