RIP Skateboarder Magazine
« on: August 19, 2013, 03:50:59 PM »
http://business.transworld.net/139322/features/grindmedia-to-close-skateboarder-magazine/

This week Skateboarder will release its third digital edition and companion limited edition print version, which will be its final edition.

"Unfortunately market conditions have forced us to have to make the difficult decision to cease publication of Skateboarder," said Norb Garrett, SVP Group Publisher of GrindMedia. "It's especially disappointing given the strong interest and initial success we've had with the new digitally focused editions; our Skateboarder team has worked incredibly hard producing a cutting-edge product that has been successful at reaching a larger audience online. We will take all of the learnings from Skateboarder's efforts and apply them to TransWorld Skateboarding and our other brands as the digital model has demonstrated real promise."

Skateboarder's editorial staff and publisher will remain on through October to support the release and distribution of the final issue and continue to support the Web site.

Sad stuff, these guys were pretty fucking great in the early 2000's when Transworlds were dictionary-sized Sketchers ads & Thrasher was alot more hit-or-miss.

Thats so tough to put all your energy in the mag only to get the plug pulled on em.  I hope someone like the skateboard mag could grab em so they can add more depth to the newer issues.

this isnt about going out of print, its about shutting down. they were digital only the last three months. i dunno why there wasnt more press or talk about their new format really, it was fun to just click around without getting convoluted or tiresome. i thought it was executed really well and looked forward to each new release. a bummer for sure

Really sad, Skateboarder was always the thinking man's skateboarding magazine. Aaron Meza always had great stories in there, so did Alex Klein.

Thanks for the great times.

Not sure where things are going with skateboard media. Advertising budgets are shifting towards 5-15 second intro clips for online videos. But what will happen with writing? Reading short snippets in a web browser can't be the answer.

The digital Skateboarder mag editions are some of the finest yet, though.

fuck. it was my favorite mag before they went digital and their video features were really good. such a bummer.

the real question is what will happen to the 411vm archives? someone needs to pick up the torch. lord knows i'd buy a bunch if i could get them in decent quality.

FUCK I forgot they were the ones archiving that shit, I hope Transworld or whoever is absorbing their resources and talent ends up keeping that going.

Juice is still kicking. I just picked up a copy last week. I really enjoy Juice. It's like everything Thrasher use to be IMO.

An unfortunate fact is that Skately was already in the process of posting all the 411 vids until Skateboarder made them take it down.

Regardless, Skateboarder has always shined on having some of the best tour articles, giving coverage to some of the less 'mainstream' skaters, and always followed the less-is-more ethos. They will be missed.

The Skateboard Mag is actually pretty mediocre. Once every few months they'll have an issue where every page is great, but a lot of the time it's got terrible writing and a bunch of dudes who I don't care about.

Totally a shame. They always put out the best stuff. That video of the Viet Nam trip was the best thing I'd seen in a while.

Best wishes to the team of people who lost their jobs. Thank you for the years of hard work and best of luck on the next endeavor.

I should have done this years ago, but I'm going to subscribe to the remaining magazines asap

I think digital mags work best on tablets where you can actually read text and page thru it comfortably. reading them by way of phone or computer isnt really the best experience for reading digital media like ebooks, digital mags, etc. I checked out their first digital issue with the Mikey Taylor cover and thought it was pretty good

I always assumed that buying into 411vm meant they were slowly getting ready to turn skateboarder into a fulltime online mag with all kinds of digital features. It really sucks that theyre closing their print mag becuse they had the best covers over the last couple years and the content was pretty decent. Hopefully the website is all the more stronger.
