For synth pop I think the early depeche mode when they still had Vince Clarke was probably the best.

I own this on a cd set I got from Captured Tracks two/three years ago. Love this band. A and I was in named ourselves in reference to the Cleaners: Daytime Cleaners. On Any Normal Monday is an amazing release.
