"The Thing" the original with Kurt Russell was a pretty awesome horror/sci-fi movie.

Indeed. The remake however should be avoided at all costs.

The original original, The Thing From Another World is a bit of fun too if you can get past the 1950's atomic age cheese.

I disagree about the Thing remake. I thought it was great. It's more of prequal than a remake

It's not exactly brooding and isolated like the Carpenter version.

The Thing (Kurt Russell one) is actually apart of a trilogy "the apocalypse trilogy" being the first part. Learned that yesterday...

to be honest the others in the trilogy are shite, and it's only a trilogy in the sense that Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and End of the World is a trilogy

Near Dark - one of the best non-dracula vampire movies ever.  creepy and violent as hell (plus the Cramps in the soundtrack)

The Begotten, not really a scary movie... more art house but some of the creepiest imagery i've ever seen.  shit stays in your head.

Re-Animator - okay not really that scary either, but probably my favorite gore movie.

In The Mouth of Madness was great.

Dead Alive, hilarious in an Evil Dead kind of way, but sillier and bloodier.

To those who were talking about Ti West... how was the "Innkeepers"?  my friend said it was terrible but i've read good things too

not much i dislike from the golden era of horror but here are some recommendations:
Re Animator
Prince of Darkness
Phantasm
From Beyond
Videodrome
Near Dark
They Live
The Gate
The Beyond
Zombi 2
Night of the Creeps
Street Trash
Suspiria
any Romero Dead film

as far as new ones that were pretty rad:
Hatchet
VHS
Feast
The Descent
Rec
The Collector
Cabin in the Woods
Martyrs

As far as the new Chucky goes, shit was pretty wack that he was completely computer generated, but the story was decent and the scene after the credits ALMOST made up for the bad parts.
You either die a hero or live long enough to watch yourself become the Berra.

SUSPSIRIA

Suspiria International Trailer

everything about this movie kills...from the plot, to the lighting, to the soundtrack, to the shots...its straight art

i watched it baked out of my mind first, and was blown away.  the movie is incredible, horror genre aside.  i watched it the next day a second time totally sober and was still floored.  gonna track down the dario argentos other work now.

I really liked it. It is a very slow burn much like The House of the Devil, maybe even slower and this may be what puts some people off. Also the pay off may not be as strong as House of the Devil, even so I was still really into it every step of the way.

I never would have had the slightest inkling the apocalypse trilogy was a thing until I looked it up, still the movies are pretty solid. The Thing is great of course, Prince of Darkness I agree is very underrated and I loved in the Mouth of Madness. Do you read Sutter Cane?

Begotten is pretty creepy to me story and visual wise. looked it up and it too is apart of an unofficial trilogy..also I like near dark. Good film.

@noileum yes I realize they're not directly connected, but apart of a TRILOGY none the less, bro.

Watched the Conjuring last night... pretty fucking awesome.  The only thing that threw me was the dad, who was played by the guy from Office Space; so every time he talked i just couldn't help but think of that movie.

Other than that, fantastic.

It was very unsettling. There's a mashup of all of the sessions in one video on youtube... It's fucking hard to watch.

Offbeat movie. It was a lot better than I expected.

horror is the best...but not into the shock, who can think of the worst way to kill/maim someone horror (i.e. Saw I-XXXXIV)...more of the "classic" stuff i.e. Exorcist, Shining, etc. everyone has mentioned.

will check out the Conjouring, as that reads like more of the classic "chills/creepy" sorta movie.  what other recent (last 5 years) stuff is along those lines?  there's nothing worse than getting yourself psyched to watch a horror movie and then having it be terrible, and not funny-b-movie terrible, just plain terrible.

as far as Zombies are concerned...i'm pretty classic as well.  Romero-style slow-walkers are the way to go.  I think Walking Dead does a good job...but not into the World War Z running maniac style (although the book is one of my favorites...mainly because follows the classic rules).  Shaun of the Dead is also a perfect Zombie movie, despite the comedy.

Dale & Tucker was good.

I give a pass to 28 Days/Weeks Later because they were done so well otherwise.

Besides a couple of cool moments that movie has aged badly. Number 3 is still pretty good.

Not everybody agrees with me and the ending is a little eh but I thought Jacob's Ladder was tight.

Second/third/whatever Suspiria. Some really unique and fantastical horror and the movie is just beautiful.

House is hilarious but also a bit too fucked up to dismiss being haunted with disturbing images. Watch it with friends.

ハウス (House) Theatrical Trailer

I've said this on here before, but the first few Silent Hill video games are a better horror experience than pretty much any horror movie I've seen. The movies, on the other hand, are not.
