I skated with a bunch of early 20-somethings today at a DIY spot in the city. You know, sometimes skating with people better than you (in this case, younger and better) pushes you to go harder. I've quit doing 360 flips for the most part but managed to pop and catch two today. I also did some other basic flatland and lip tricks on a flat bar at the spot. I normally just stick to ditches and mini-ramps but I walked away from today's sesh feeling pretty good about myself. I mean, in no way was I killing it like the younger guys but I didn't feel irrelevant either.

I thought I'd share some old dude footage. Most of it is ditch skating and some in in my friend's basement. Try not to heckle me too much. :P

floop, nice lipslide man!
Here's my mini-contribution to old man footy:

this is me struggling to get a grind in the Antwerp pool. That thing is super-steep (built by Team Pain)... Being European I had never skated a pool before, only skatepark bowls, and I've got a whole new level of respect for backyard rippers now!

I know they are amazing at tricks (not much style in my opinion anymore!) , but I don't need to see a bunch of kids in tight jeans , all doing the same tricks, with the same lack of style. Again, my opinion!

P.S. that band Head on Collision, I'm friends with the drummer and you will be happy to know that he skates. We skated a lot together for a good 5-7 years or so. He's currently in a band called "Who Fucking Cares?". The guitarist/singer of Head on Collision has a few things going I hear, one being "Lucifer D. Larynx and the Satanic Grind Dogs of Death". He was once in a band called "Very Metal" that is my favorite local (St Louis) band of all time!

Fang-you said it, it's weird to me to see all the young guys doing some badass tricks, but without much style. I think that's what makes some guys really stand out. If a young guy has killer style he REALLY stands out from all the cookie cutter, 20 stair killing handrail kings.  Stand out young guns to me right now include Ben Raybourn, but then he has that "old school" flair so I don't know if he counts.

Very Metal was the shit, I'm assuming you're old enough to have come up in St. Louis with other great bands around the late 80's early 90's then? Fragile Porcelain Mice were great and of course Ultraman. I have to admit I really liked seeing the Urge live too, that was always a great time. Did you ever travel south to Farmington Missouri to skate Gino's- it was an indoor park at a roller rink.  Just wondering if we ever ran into eachother...

Fang and Twistingtheknife: I got into Head On Collision from seeing Thrasher's "Bust Or Bail" contest on Youtube. Not only is that one of the best contests to ever go down in my opinion, but that song was the perfect choice for the video. I checked them and keep them in my playlist, but this song in particular gets me stoked to skate...
Thrasher Bust or bail contest
I wish they had more contests like this...Real spot, whoever shows up can enter, throw down with whatever you want, best of show wins, no fucking around.

I'm 42 and only here to pick on the kids. Actually I started coming here to kill time at my last job (Fuel tv) where it was ok to be on skateboard websites all day. Now I rarely post.

Age:33
Set Up: 8" shop board. Thunder 149. 52mm wheels
Preferred Terrain: Street
Favorite skaters: Mike Carroll. Keenan Milton. AVE. Heath Kirchart. John Cardiel. Andrew Reynolds
Music: You'll catch me listening to kinds of stuff but always partial to punk/hardcore
Married: No. Live with girl for past 5 months (2/12 year relationship)
Occupation: Advertising Executive

1. Do you feel like you fit in with today's generation of skateboarders? If no, why?
No, not really but I can say that as a blanket statement of today's generation as well. I think today's skaters are more critical of fellow skaters in a very superficial way. Skating today is amazing, with something for everyone, but the categories skaters are getting placed into other skaters just seems trivial (we could've stopped at hesh vs. fresh). Also, everything about skating today is beneficial to the average skater/fan of skating. The amount of access to great skating you can get daily and at an instant. The access to your favorite pros. Access to skateparks and skateshops. That seems so under appreciated by the current generation. I will say that the outsider attitude is lacking because skating is so mainstream but you can't fight it so why not enjoy it. Let me put it into perspective, i went to a high school is East Los Angeles with more than 2,000 students. There were probably 20 skaters in the school the whole time i was there. This was 94-98.

I would like to touch on the subject of SOTY. The award should go to skaters that are exceptional. I don't fully buy into the notion that the winner must fit the "Thrasher" attitude so if you're killing it you should win it. I'd say that since '96 Koston there have only been a handful of skaters that "earned it" by putting in a body of work and killing it the year it was one. Rowley, TNT, Cole, Daewon, and MJ. The rest (all well deserved (Silas though?) and now mostly legends) were all the top dogs that year. This year Nyjah was the top dog. He should've gotten it. If you used the same criteria that was applied to Reynolds and BA, he should've won it. Ishod is rad too but to not give it to Nyjah, one the most skilled skaters of his generation after what he did this year dilutes the award. The award started getting questionable when it became award season on the Thrasher site with companies pushing parts out then by not awarding it to Guy and now Nyjah.

3. In the last month, what single trick have you done that you're most proud of, and which one has been driving you crazy?
The hardest part has been making the time to go skating. Always enjoy skating to get some food or the market, I got bit of a downhill street from my place.

Long time lurker, first time old guy

I dunno where I first heard it, but skaters like Hosoi, Hawk , Cab, Jessee, Mariano, Koston etc etc... you can tell it's them just by the way they skate! I can't do that with many of the youngbloods. I believe this is a product of jumping straight into tricks before just cruising around on the board like the old days! Raybourn is a slayer that's for sure!

Off the top of my head, bands we had locally were like Laffinstock, Big Fucking Deal, Whoppers Taste Good (<-- late 80s etc), then Dogfight (the original version rocked!), Round 2, Shortcut, Discourse, New Iron Column, and of course Judge Nothing etc etc. Fragile Porcelain Mice were pretty big around here. I saw them at Bastille's a few times I believe! Back in those days I didn't venture to Farmington much, as we felt we had to "rep" our local spots sooooo hard, ha. That Gino's place sounds awesome though, I always wanted to skate one of those roller rink floors!

Nice to see old dudes around here. Maybe you were always here and I was just lurking too much.

Age: 40
Setup: 8.25 whatever board I can afford
           thunders
          54mm spitfires
Terrain: anything
Skaters: Brian Anderson, Peter Hewitt, Cardiel, Mike Carroll, Sheffey, Oyola
Music: Maiden, AC/DC, Suicidal, Slayer
Married: No
Occupation: Loser/Student/Unemployed

1.) Yeah feel like I can relate to this generation of skaters. Kids are the same, we have changed.

2.) SOTY is all about who you skate for. If you skate for a Deluxe company, more than likely you will win.

Dogfight were awesome! Holy shit forgot all about them. A band I was in back then got to open for Judge Nothing at Bernard's Pub at the time I thought that was the greatest thing ever! I always liked Bent then as well and got to catch Uncle Tupelo a few times.

I understand not traveling to skate when you had the city available, just had quite a few guys come down from the city to skate the ramps. We had a 2 foot, 4 foot and 6 foot at Gino's all indoors. Of course as soon as one of the crew got a license we started hitting the city regularly. I miss skating downtown back then, especially late nights. You had all of downtown to yourself then (91-94). Just us and the bums after 9pm. Unless there was a game there really wasn't anything else going on downtown. Kiener Plaza, all the marble, underground parking lots. Skated lots at some banks over in south city too, don't remember what everyone called the place, it was off Lemp and Potomac I think? Near Cherokee street.

I agree about kids these days just jumping on their boards and trying tricks immediately. It took me a whole damn summer to learn how to ollie! But besides a one or two older guys around that skated you had no way to learn stuff then and now the internet makes everything immediately available with the click of a button. Shit how many times would you rewind a damn vhs tape to try and learn a trick? I remember watching rubbish heap 8 million times trying to learn certain things, late shuv-its come to mind. Now you can just look that shit up on youtube. The learning curve is certainly different now days.

I wonder if kids now still have people giving them shit for skating like we did? Back when I started as all you other guys are well aware, skating was NOT COOL. Running from rednecks who wanted to beat your ass for just being a skate rat was a pretty normal occurrence for me growing up. Normally some big truck would roll by, some hillbilly would yell "skate fags"or "skate rat", we'd flip them off, then run for our lives. That's some character building stuff! Seriously though, it's got to be a way different experience to be in highschool now and be a skater then it was when I was coming up. Maybe it was different in bigger cities or on the coasts, but here it could be pretty rough. That's my OLD MAN rant, those little fuckers just don't know how good they have it these days!

1. Do you feel like you fit in with today's generation of skateboarders? If no, why?

Its weird, I'm somewhere in the middle.  I think when I want I skate good enough to hang but then there is a huge gap to that dude thats on the next level.  I'm not really down with a lot of the fake style shit and feathery ass tre flips.  As for attitudes, there seems to be two breeds, one thats kinda trying to tap into the old school vibe, and then there is a lot of this limp wrist shit, where everyone likes to skate like a sloth and be the cool guy.  if you give the  typical "yeeeaaahhh" they pretend like they didn't hear you.  To cool for school shit.  if you have been around some of the sponsored kids you know this limped out bitch aint getting to the next level.  I find MOST young dudes are cool with whatever tho.

2. Top 5 songs to listen to on the way to a session

Albert Hammond Jr. - anything
Keith Murray - anything
Jazz Butcher - Bad Dream Lover ( soo good)
BIG - anything
Paul Simon - greatest Hits album  front to back

3. In the last month, what single trick have you done that you're most proud of, and which one has been driving you crazy?

I started skating vert and bowls recently.  So kick turn I guess?, carving bowls, finding lines etc..  Nothing really.  I tweaked my ankle on a fakie crooks on this mini ramp and heard this pop.  Since then I have been doing workouts at home " Insanity" my wife got me to kinda rehab that shit.  That was thanksgiving. So I'll be back to trying stuff again this next week i hope.

On street my staples are switch back tail / regular back tail. Switch crooks, 5-O to switch crooks. I really am finding transition to be hella fun, and help my other skating.

EDIT: on a side note, I'm finding that my casual two days a week is not enough to keep fat off like it used to so doing different workouts is playing a big role in keeping me some what young.  even though im old.

I was going to keep this thread going for us all and change course a little bit.
Since we're basically all turning into Carroll, Howard and Koston from Mouse when they're old and talking about how many tricks they invented and all, how about all of our favorite era of skating for each of us.  You know, GLORY DAYS and all...post up some skating of you at your peak, if that was your favorite time.
I'll start this off, this was 1993-1994 and still is my favorite time in skating.  Pressure flips were gone, skating started to mellow out with the hyperactivity, I didn't have shit to do but just go out and skate everyday with the homies.  Obviously it's probably just a factor of this being when I was 21-22 years old and life was easy as all hell.  This is footage from a homie video that we made with Montoya, Bryan Paz (RIP), Dennis Bellew and a few other 508 homies...raw footage as the copy with music is super jacked.  Time hasn't been kind to VHS.
<iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/2986580" width="500" height="333" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe> <p><a href="http://vimeo.com/2986580">Rothmeyer raw footage from A Perfect World 1993</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user777165">Jason Rothmeyer</a> on <a href="https://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

This just made me nostalgic as hell.
That era was so fun, never had fs flips like that, always wished I could but broke so many boards that way.
Fakie tre over the bike rack and all the garage footage is gold. Loved the whole thing, thanks for sharing!

damn that was good! you were consistent with your tricks man, unlike many of us in the 90's ha........during that era, I was desperately trying to keep up with flip tricks and missing way more shit than I was landing!

anyways choosing my favorite era is easy: it was those 6 or 9 months in 98 (I think) when the Eiffel tower banks remained empty. Usually they were empty only for 2 weeks or so and I was so hyped on the spot, I hardly ever went skating anywhere else during that time period. skating right under the Eiffel Tower was just magic. We used to chill and drink beers there when the session was over and the crazy thing was, the cops didn't give a damn, even though we stood out like a sore thumb, with the masses of tourists around us.... Unfortunately I don't have any footage from that, we never filmed. Access to video cameras then was not what it is now....But at least I have this tailslide pic to remember it. I would really give good money to get one more session in that place.......every time I'm close, I go check out the banks, but they're always full. I don't think they've been skated since that year actually, never saw any footage anywhere. Fuck, now I'm feeling all nostalgic!

Damn, that video's crazy. I wasn't even close to that good when I was young hahaha.

My favorite eras in skating were easily the late 80's/early 90's, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, but 2000-now. I was a young teen in the late 80's and there was nothing to worry about in life other than skating. Come home from school, listen to some Bad Religion in my room for a little while, tell my mom that my homework was done even though it wasn't, and head out to meet up with my friends for a quick "Hokus Pokus" viewing and a 6-7 hour session.

Like FF said, we didn't film ourselves or have access to a video camera. The best we had was a disposable camera here and there shoplifted from 7-11 to grab some crappy still shots...

This one's me skating a mini that some dudes that we knew built in the fields behind their house in the summer of '89...It was built mostly from one of the guys' little brothers' fort I think, didn't have coping on one side, and was pretty rickety, but that didn't stop us...We spent half of that summer (it only lasted about a month and a half) all day every day over there skating.

This one was from 1990 I believe, one of our favorite street spots, Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in the ghetto (RIP). It had a nice broken in ledge, a good bank, a two stair, and as you see here, a decent sized loading dock. I still love to do a good Ollie North and I still call them that too...

Even though I've talked so much here about feeling disconnected from skateboarding in this day and age, I'll still gladly admit that I love it as much as/more than I ever have, and know that the skill level is beyond what anyone could have ever dreamed of even 5 years ago, much less 20 years ago. Shane O'Neil and P-Rod may not be my favorite "type" of skaters, but I'm still blown away by their skating and I'll still sit here and watch in amazement at their tricks and skill.

This one's me skating a mini that some dudes that we knew built in the fields behind their house in the summer of '89...It was built mostly from one of the guys' little brothers' fort I think, didn't have coping on one side, and was pretty rickety, but that didn't stop us...We spent half of that summer (it only lasted about a month and a half) all day every day over there skating.

fuck yes

my favorite era would have to be late 80's.  probably because that was the most care free period of my life, but also it was just the most fun.  watching Bones Brigade and H Street Videos in the morning..  go skate all day, all over the fucking place (we probably travelled like 10 miles each day no car)..  going from backyard ramp, to street spot, to ditches, to shitty launch ramps put against a wall.   i know the old dude rant is.. old..  but, it's true that back then if you met someone out skating they were pretty much immediately your friend.   there weren't all these different sects.   next thing you know you're at their parents house skating a ramp and their mom is making you food

i'd like to achieve the equivalent of Old School the movie except with old skating friends.  i'll ask my parents if we can have a sleep over and we'll sneak out in the night and throw eggs at cars.  then in the morning watch Bones Brigade and go skate.  who's with me?!

That footage was tight, seriously through me into an intstant time warp in my head.....one of my first boards was a Jason Rothmeyer Santa Cruz.?

Thanks for the $2 royalty!  I bet it bought me some Taco Bell back in the day.
The old photos are sometimes even better than the old videos.  There's a lot of character in old photos that comes out.  That backyard ramp is reminiscent of many I skated back then.  A kink right at the bottom of the tranny you have to deal with.  No coping makes it easier to learn pivot fakies...good stuff.
I'm so down for the late 80's as well.  I guess anytime between 86-94 is the shit for me for different reasons.  The excitement of the newness of it all from 86-88, starting to branch out skating all over the place in 88-90, then just being on top of my game a little more in 91-94.  Like I said, whatever age you were really has a lot to do with your favorite era I'm guessing.

totally agree.  i went to the FTC book release this past weekend, and the photos threw me into a serious time warp.  and every little detail was as good as the skating, if not better.  the hair styles/color, the sneakers, tees, etc.  all of it.  it said wonders about the time.  it's REALLY good and i highly recommend getting it.  it's worth every dime.

Finally found a way to embed this shit. I think I'm skating a Kenny Hughes deck here....back when the Element team was rad!
anyways I just had to show you guys the raddest spot on earth, period. Yeah I'm biased I know.....

bonus: what the spot looks like usually.

for those who want to see footage, check out Video Days......Gonz, Jason Lee and Danny Way all skated it.
