Hewitt had the best answer for winning soty. Burman I agree should be in the running he should not be top five all he had is this one part. It's a little early for him to get it and how the fuck is suciu not in the running anymore?

I couldnt make up my mind between Ishod and Westgate. I started to vote for Tommy just cause I know its his last shot but....I somehow dont think Nyjah will get it. Theres a subtle dig at him in the new Thrasher in the "Blowing it in South Africa" article. Awesome article btw. Reminds me of something my friends and I would do(minus the thousands of $$$ at stake). If I were Jake I'd have to let the readers decide this year. I wouldn't want to make the call myself.

Westgate skates in such an unmistakable way that he'll be talked about for years as being one of the best. If you look at the list, his name most definitely fits on there. To over-dramatise things, SOTY shouldn't just mean 'who had the gnarliest footage this year?' (which is kinda like asking 'which guitar player played the fastest solo?'), more, 'who merits a place in the history books?'.

It's all subjective though and you could totally make the same argument for anyone on that list. For me, Westgate sits alongside Carroll, Rowley, Grant etc in having his own very distinct thing going on that I don't get so much from the others.

Whatever. Phelps' stupid whims decide it anyway so none of this matters.

I've got to agree with this, if you only saw Westgate's silhouette in footage it would be instantly recognisable just like Carroll, Rowley ect. and it would still be just as appealing.

I was sure about voting for Westgate until yesterday... I can't make up my mind between Ishod and Westgate - it would have been so fucking cool if they putted Suciu in the top 5 instead of Nyjah - just to show the kids what a true skater is! (just like that comment about the pitcher/baseball... on that note - what the hell is the interesting part about baseball??)

I just recently saw a picture (I thought it was on instagram but now I can't find it) of Ishod getting the thrasher logo tattooed on his bicep. Could be a sign of something?

For me skate of the year means who killed everything. Not just one type of something. If there was a "best handrail skater", Nyah would be a shoe in. Ishod and Westgate crushed everything. Rails, ledges, banks, tranny, whatever. To me, that's the best "skateboarder". Someone who skates anything.

I'll also say SOTY seemed to be a lot cooler when it was just an honor, not a competition. No one used to try to win. It was just a thumbs up. Now it's just another contest for people to take too seriously.

Edit: before anyone says "hey he skated those couple ledges and a manual pad", just stop. Nyjah is a handrail skater.
