came into possession of the royal tenenbaums recently. gotta say, that movie is above and beyond 95% of the movies i've seen so far, and it really made other media obsolete. it all turns to ash in my mouth. what movies have you seen that top this movie in your opinion, or which brought you to higher plains of understanding of the moving picture media?

Dawn of the Dead from 1978.

Seriously.

I was barley a teenager when I saw it. At the time all I wanted was horror and action movies with blood and gore a plenty and then I heard about Dawn of the Dead. People talked about the blood and gore so I was interested but more than that, people were analysing the movie and looking at its message. I was an idiot and couldn't figure what the hell people were on about. Its just a fucking zombie movie right? The movie admittedly isn't that deep and its points about consumerism are in your face obvious but when I saw the movie it clicked and I realised there was more going on than zombies.

It was a game changer in general about how I saw movies. This realisation that there was more going on with movies than just dumb entertainment.

royal tannenbaums really does rule. if you liked it you should check out Rushmore if you haven't already.

the first one that came to mind for me, was honestly paranoid park. its an all around good movie, as a skater i think you're better able to connect with the emotions of the film than the skate imagery, since we see that all time. i think it really speaks to a certain kind of person, it definitely did to me.

in terms of documentaries .. its a total mindfuck.. incredibly engrossing film even not just for documentaries.

of course blade runner.... talk about a game changer, don't think i've been able to care about another scifi flick since seeing that.

you mentioned "higher planes of understanding of moving picture media".. that description perfectly sums up Koyaansiqantsi.......doesn't get more 'art house' than this but its wicked good

To whoever said it was cliche- Pulp Fiction blew my mind when I first saw it when I was like 12.

Every time I watch trainspotting I notice a new subtle little thing the director did, and it just keeps getting better. Little things like the foreshadowing graffiti, the scene with the soccer match playing while Mark is getting laid, with the soccer match essentially matching the progression of their sex, to all the little things in the withdrawal scene. What is awesome is that the movie is enjoyable without really even paying attention to any of that, but just keeps getting better with every viewing.

Annie Hall- it turns out I can love a romantic comedy. I was hesitant about Woody Allen before seeing this movie, now I see why everybody overlooks him fucking his stepdaughter. "I'm into leather"
