How do you like your shoes to fit?
« on: August 12, 2014, 12:16:14 AM »
I grew up playing Ice hockey and most players wear a half size or a full size smaller in skates than shoes to stop your foot from having any movement in the skates. Resulting in blisters etc for the first few weeks of the season. Because of this I've always bought my skate shoes quite small. I usually wear them once all day with no socks, then thin dress style socks before moving up to regular athletic socks to stretch them out. After a couple skates they're just right. I've tried buying my true size but any gap at the front makes me feel like I have less control of my flick.

How about you guys? Any Microwaving, stretching etc. to get them just right? Other shoe superstitions or rules?

Thight! Sometimes I feel like I'm  wearing clown shoes, but it helps. Recently I started buying shoes half a size smaller. The first session feels awkward but afterwards they're perfect.

half a size too small, wear em to work for a week then they are prime for a shred!

shoes that are true size stretch out after like 5 skates and then they feel like turd.. as said above feels like i lose flick control

Close to the foot, snug, with a vice grip for heel lock. If my heel moves even the slightest, forget it. I actually prefer to have 'hot spots' in my foot (from the shoe being tight) for the first week until they stretch out.

Lakai Howard is phenomenal. Koston 2 the same. You couldn't make your heel slip in either shoe even if you skated them untied.

I have an extremely wide foot, so I have to buy a half size bigger, which is absolutely awful. Kickflips only work for about a week until the shoe stretches out, then the flick is just gone.
If you take medical advice from this puddle of retards you are going to die.

What shoes have worked for you best?

I like shoes to fit snug, they should be uncomfortable at first but not painful

i buy my skateshoes on my true size, got a bad experience with half size too small ones, felt like all the little bones in my feet crashed themselves into each other, causing arch pain for almost a year after...

Thats one of the reasons I was wondering what other people do. My feet are kind of jacked after 20+ years of skates and small skate shoes. I've been trying a half size up and moved on to more supportive shoes then the vans I've always worn. Skating my first pair of blazer hi's. They're pretty narrow and thats helping my foot stay in place with my toes just touching the front instead of jammed in.

just put a bigger or a second insole when they stretch out, no reason to torture your toes with tiny shoes ;D

If I can flex my toes without my heel slipping, it's good. My ankles are pretty big from tendon tearing and months of physical therapy, so as long as the forefoot is snug I can skate em.

I buy them true to size and I tighten them up so they fit snug. When I was younger I used to buy them half a size to a full size up; probably because I was an idiot. But I do remember thinking for some reason that the fatter/puffier a shoe looked the cooler it was, which is why I did it. That was just the fad at the time.

Very valid thread. I just decided to stop doing a half size small due to my heel being ripped up in my vans. I am just going to suck it up and make sure my feet are comfy and learn to ride in a shoe that is my actual size.

this never bothered me until recently, skating high tops actually felt like my heel was locked in proper and i can't go back to low shoes. Laces a couple holes down from the top for the ankle freedom

Just perfect right size kinda snug but a little room for my toes, use to think my feet should feel more free wearing half a size up but realized I had poor board feel and control and barely any flick, had half a size down just cause some blazers were on sale and it didn’t work out. My feet felt easily sore after anything
