Got a couple sets of the Vu Skateshop x Bones x99 to try out.  Currently skating a Spitfire F4 Classic 53, so hopefully it won't be too drastic...

What is everone's opinion on the Bones x99?

Link for those interested
https://vuskateboardshop.com/collections/skateboard-wheels/products/bones-x-vu-x99-collab-wheels-53mm?variant=43640565039271

Tried out the x99 wheels today, mind you my local park is over 20 years old and the concrete has seen better days.

Speed:  At my local the x99 felt faster than F499 classic
Slide: Wheel was definitely grippier sliding, but i think will be easy to control, no as “icy” feeling as F499 classic
Grip: Having skated both F499 classic & conical full, the x99 feel like a classic and conical full had a love child… it has the grip & confidence of a conical full with the agility of a classic
Placebo???: As an older skater (46), I felt the wheels definitely took the “shock” out of landing tricks, and my feet definitely thanked me after todays session… not sure if it was the new insoles or wheels, but was a great session today!

Hell yeah. This is a killer shape. I definitely should have trusted instinct and gone bigger.

No biggie. I realized that my 58mm dragons are now exactly 54mm. I was kinda shocked by that.
In 2023 I burned around 25- 30mm total of urethane.

That's fuckin cool to think about.

These remind me of the DTF formula wheel when I look at um.

Ditch tech formula was the formula that got away. Fuckin whole set up poof vanished.

Anyway here I go to the spot. Gonna check 97s out. I hope my imagination it's spoiled by dragons momentum.

That's hard to give up. Not many hills around here. Spit needs to match that one aspect of the new bones formula if possible.

Maintaining you're speed better was the true power of the new bones shit

Now we're heading into the 60mm plus in the spring it actually doesn't matter that much.

Wheels over 60 mm don't lose to much momentum.
[close]
That really does look like a fun board to skate.

Those big fat wheels touch something way down deep to when I first got first skateboard in like ‘89 with big wheels like that.

Ever see the end of 2001: space odyssey when he’s turning back into a baby? I kind of feel like that

I'm really stoked. This wheels got no prob going over the horrendous crust I hit day in day out.

I definitely should have gone 56s but these are so sick

Definitely feeling older wider shapes with this formula

Ya, Flea. The 97s work real nice in the wider shapes. My winter wheel for outdoor motivation and indoor slip prevention.

Shit is so good. Fast af. Good momentum retainment. 97 is the way.

Low bounce too. I'm in heaven almost. Next time we going 60mm. Tho I'd say these are smooth and fast enough that you don't 100 need the extra mils

are ghetto child wheels any good?
[close]

IMO and I think this reflects most of Slap:
Spitfire F4, Bones X series, mayyyyybe Bones STF are the most preferred/highest quality wheels.

Below that NFG had a dedicated following but they're out of business and there are only 2 major wheel manufacturers that make most brands. I dunno who makes Ghetto Child, but unless its Creative you're looking at a third tier wheel at best. No real reason to ride them over the top 3 choices.
In the case of lower tier wheels, this time tested idiom applies more than ever: You Pay For What You Get.

EDIT  Also applicable: You Forget What You Pay For.

Are they x97 killers? Because these x97’s are pretty darn great (don’t slide that easily though on smooth skatepark concrete, though).

Can confirm Lock-ins might be a slappy secret weapon. The asymmetry will drive me bonkers at some point but for now I'm really enjoying them. It might be perceived but my grinds on curbs and coping are feeling locked and loaded.

Skated some ages ago, dismissed them (I got 55s, which could have been the problem and my slappy games was poor compared to now); skating 53mm now...big deal 2mm but I'm feeling this set. Roll on is fine and lock is much more stable than classics, which always had me slipping out on shit with 52mms, even basics.

Coming off bones v1 -> spit conical -> Bones V6s - essentially a radial - I was slipping out of front krooks on the V1s, slappy back feebles on the v6s were amazing just roll in, roll out but couldn't keep it locked for long (long, long grinds), same for regular krooks. Skating spit conicals before the V6s and it's sort of a toss up - I'm not sure how much more stable I am on the lockins over the conicals - but there is slightly more hanger room - and I'd wager the conical side cut is tall enough on bigger wheels 54mm+

...if they work for BevUp, surely they can work for the rest of us?

After the V1/v6s I think I'd rather the lockins have the radial outer instead of the conical.

I haven't tried the x97.

I'd say if they bounce then yes. I had to kill that before it killed me. Also the moisture issue was extremely problematic. Just the slightest darker discoloration on the bricks means you might slam doing a tick tack for speed.

I can't have that fulltime. I ride 55+ with the fastest bearings I've ever had. And the signs of danger was present day one.

I was bombing out the parking garage and cutting a long fast left into scared and confused traffic. Slipping out the entire time. Like snowboarding on ice.

That's a recipe for disaster.

The small benefits of the dragon can't pull me away from spit.

The Andy Nano almost got bought but I feel like it would have exaggerated my current double sided curb issues while riding the 6.1.

I'm slapping together a Heated Wheel polarizer on the first of the month.

Hopefully the orchard sale will still be going on those decks.

I wish I saw that when I ordered my wheels. Now I just ain't got the bread b

I'm going to throw my 93s 58s on it.

I love polerizers. I would call it my first skate discipline really. I banana boarded from age 5-9. I think because of this Im really competent with the mini bloard.

So long as I don't try edging out in pool coping. That's me begging for a bad day.

Eventually I'd need some really small soft wheels tho. No slide. Like 50mm 80hds or even like the gems or whatever those new spits are called.

Those would be perfect tho not really accurate to my vision

I'd really need like a super mini version of the tablets that are natural clear.

I'm definitely getting the Peter Hewitt board because it's the shortest one.

Took them (and some 103a V3 STFs) to a rough ass spot I frequent today and fucking hell I missed the x-formula...vibration was just crazy (annoying) and I couldn't skate the 2 hours or so I usually put in as I was so put off by either set; I had the spit lockins setup as I was skating different/smoother spots over the weekend and no problems.

Actually tempted to dip back to x97s for that one spot (not naming names but most notables are running dragons or x97s at this spot).

Madness.

Damn Bones giving us such a perfect wheel. What on earth on we going to tinker with after finding the perfect setup!

I wonder if they’ll release the rest of the V shapes in X.

Have fun

Hahaha bonkers, that is exactly the same colour as your car. I don't think they necessarily look bad?! Did you dye with IDye Poly? I've died a bunch of wheels with different dyes, that stuff is the best I've found. The colour will fade a touch IME. A dash of grey will darken tone as well.

Would you need to stack risers with wheels over 60mm? I've been eyeing some 64mm Dragons for my cruiser but I keep thinking is it too much...

Some others who ride the other big old skool wheels upwards of 61+ usually only use 1/8" to 1/4" and they have quite loose trucks, so it wouldn't be too bad.

On other complete old school setups, they have 1/2" risers as standard on similar size wheels and they work really well, so it depends on how your trucks are and how much you need to turn.

Making wheel wells is often a better trade off than adding too much height for risers, if you are so inclined.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Ok. I have a set of 1/8 risers and try to stick with them for now. Too much height would make it feel like riding a monster truck.

I had a set of oj thunder juice which are 70ish mm, and used 1/2” riser and didn’t get too much wheel bite.  I don’t worry too much with hard wheels at a park, but I’d rather be safe than sorry with soft wheels going fast.

I heard that the Paris (basically the main longboard brand) street truck has big clearance on their own. Apparently, they are made in the same factory where af1s are made. A lot of the longboard guys can use them with lower risers.

Skating some x99 wide at the moment. They seem to be rolling really well on rougher ground, but not sure if that's because they are 54mm (I'm used to a bit smaller). They slide verry good but feel like softer wheels, they don't make any noise on smooth concrete.

What wheel would you suggest on cobblestone? I'm my city it's mainly cobble stone pavement. So far I think hard and wide such as 101 f4 wide has worked the best. Maybe because its less bouncy due to hardness and wider? Still haven't cracked it

Personally I'm not planning on it.

Riding those 59 Radial Fulls on forged 144s no risers with blue 92a bushings and wheelbite isn't an issue for me so far. Will try cast plates before risers with the 66s.

This isn't my main setup, mostly for pushing around town looking for spots and long distance pushing. I do tricks on this board, but it's not my main at all.

Sounds good. I got the big wheels and put them on my Ace Classics with hard bushings + 1/8 risers. So far, feels nice but this will be my cruiser mostly.

And I fuckin killed that spot to the best of my ability after my ACL "heeled" first time I went.
Sam invited me to a cool little barrier party that Tim threw. Super fun time. I miss living in the city desperate.

I'm in Boston for band practice tomorrow!!! I'm going to stay after and bomb around a while. Really test this new Duro.

Crosstown Mash from Dorchester to China Town.

Then I wanna go up the commons and look at the bomb the diagonal hell pathway.
Has these two curbs being unearthed in the middle you gotta mash through when you're crossing other paths. I found it by accident two years ago at Freedom Rally or whatever it's called now.

It's pretty fuckin intense.
I was showing off for my friends. Thought is was a normal pathway. Just diagonal.

Yo baby girl and the nerd they brought with us for some reason.
Yo watch my old ass break the sound barrier and show you I'm a fuckin SHAMAN not some lame ass hunter and definitely not a narc ass gather.

Wheeeee! Instant regret because I was going far far too fast to put a foot down on brand new 58mm ogs and these insanely crusted cracked out holes around the perimeter unsuspected granite train tracks I got to hit at an angle are coming in hot.

And this fuckin GI Joe looking mother fucker with a flat top and a gorilla build in Air Jesus' is mean mugging my ass like immediately after the curbs.

He's all red in the face holding his back regreting parking up hill in this beautiful weather.
He's refused to step 6 inches to the right into to the grass until I was shitting my pants going over the things at and right on him.

I thought he was just going tuck shoulder and brace for impact but... he blinked.

Probably cuz I was screaming like the Black PewDiePie on ig about to get cross checked by a Prius. And there was like 10000 fuckin people watching.

Probably a cop looking for a kill. But thought way too many eyes. Or they too shit their pants.

Took 5 years off my life. But it was definitely the best thing to happen that year besides getting my apartment.

I'm probably just going to bomb Bowdoin Street head back home.

I think Copley is gone  :-\

Those blocks better end up some place beautiful.

These wheels fuckin built for that shit. I'm going to do it again this year maybe. Probably take a 67 to get over two more years of rain running down that thing.

I'm super fuckin lucky I had those 58mm wheels.

Oh yeah with 66.6mm wheels
I feel like two or three Green 3 Ply risers would do it.

Maybe two Venture style and one Universal in the middle. I think universal is yellow. That'd be sick af.
That with a Green Loose trucks kit and My 6.1s. maybe throw a Green Bait and Tackle bottom bushing on just for safety sake.

Boom might just be the formula for folding space and pulling my ass into the future so can live 200 years.

Skatebloarding is the only thing that gives me a measure of good self-esteem I think.

Graffiti Ill hate myself till the end. Music I need 10 more instruments under my belt yesterday. I'm a fuckin slob.
Skatebloarding tho.
Just rolling around makes me feel like I invented the entire universe and I got it by the kiwi. I don't care what anyone has to say against it.
It's the truth. It's power
