Best city to live in Canada
« on: December 07, 2014, 03:12:50 PM »
Inspired by your American topic... hopefully some Canadian pals can get involved here...

I'm from Montreal and I've lived in Vancouver for about a year and a 1/2.

Montreal has a better nightlife and lower cost of living. But it has limited job opportunities.
Vancouver has more job opportunities but there's a shitty night life. Also I can hardly say this place is Canadian anymore, its more like Asia's child. I know this will sound bad but the only thing that bothers me about Vancouver is that the Asian people aren't very gregarious and it makes the culture very reserved. I've lived all around Vancouver too.

I'm thinking of heading over to either Victoria or Toronto. I visited Victoria and not only was it beautiful, but people were amazing. Like I made 3 new best friends while I was there for a couple of days. Tons of cute girls too, with a University population.
Toronto entices me because of it's economy. And it's a large city.

What are all your thoughts?

Toronto's an over-priced, still boring, now more jock filled piece of shit. If you have an issue with Asian people (that's fucked, ps) you'll have an issue with Toronto, too. If you want to work in finance and drive a BMW to your condo then join right in, though. Seriously, Canada is fucked up. I'm trying to get the fuck out of Toronto and move up north ASAP.

I'd say Montreal is the only liveable city left here.

I live in Halifax 6 months of year and Its hands down my favourite city in Canada. I lived in Kelowna BC as well as Toronto and nothing compares to the east coast. Everyone there is so god damn nice and you will have no problem meeting new people. Girls are fine as hell there and will be all over you if your from a big city. Beer and smokes are pretty damn expensive and theres not much for work other than logging or fishing, but if you have film experience you can make a killing in the movie industry out here. The skate scene is also the best one i've ever been a part of, theres no bad vibes at any of the parks or shops and everyones cool with each other. Halifax also has come crazy fucking hills, picture SF hills but completely destroyed by brutal winters and a massive explosion 100 years ago

I've only lived in 3 major canadian cities.

Winnipeg(grew up there) - good: AMAZING skate scene with so many great parks, super cheap living costs, lots of good restaurants and a
                                                 coffee.
bad:  murder capital of canada, most brutally cold winters ever, no freeways so getting around can sometimes be
                                                frustrating.

Ottawa (lived for 2.5 years) - good:  super scenic and beautiful, very safe, traffic jams are minimal, good people, pretty good food
bad:  not one good coffee place in the whole city, 50% of the city wears suits everyday, not to many good
skateparks (although looks like a good one is just being built right now)

Toronto (been here for only 4 months) -  good:  mellow winters, insane amounts of good food/coffee, endless things to do.  It's big.
bad:  traffic jams always, even at 10pm on sunday, surprisingly few skateparks in the actual city,
                                                            everything is overpriced.

Final verdict:  I like them all, but Ottawa takes the slight edge.

Is it true that everybody in Canada is 2 children standing on each other's shoulders wearing grown-up clothes?

I just moved to Toronto from Ottawa 4 months ago too! But I would say that already Toronto is the better city.

I lived in Montreal and Toronto. Skate scenes are amazing in both cities. Montreal will be the time of your life if you can speak French. You may never leave. Spent a lot of time in Vancouver and it ain't what it used to be.

once upon a time when i usedta drink i caught a wrong train outta buffalo and instead of returning to cleveland i ended up in welland, ontario. canucks were awful friendly but otherwise it wasn't that great of a place. the money had hockey players on frozen pond [street skating version of hockey] and dunkin donuts is called tim horton's. it was sort of a surreal alternative america.
montreal seems like a dream, i know pj and them usedta make the trek up there to film. i guess the hell's angels usedta be a big deal there in the black market. imagine hell's angels speaking french? i know france has colonized more of the world than anyone but england and jean-claude van damme would beat me up but it still seems goofy for badasses to speak francois. someone should throw some french biker badasses on their next skate edit. that would be alternative.

The mafia still runs Montreal, the days of "Mum" Boucher calling the shots are long gone. Bikie gangs don't go anywhere without a police escort, police even follow the lowly Warthogs everywhere they go (don't tell them I said that)

It's pretty hard to make fun of someone's language with a gun in your mouth. On the whole Montreal is very safe, has very good transport and food, plus you don't need a car. If there is a New York of Canada it's Montreal. If you polled most English speaking Canadians if they prefer Montreal or Toronto, most would say Montreal. 8% Anglophones shows how shitty Toronto is. Only better thing is the mild winters and Toronto Craptors

If you're American come to Canada NOW, Canadian dollar is at decade low. It's pretty fucking sweet to ski the best mountains on earth, Aussies take advantage of it that's for sure.

I have family in Regina. It's a decent enough town but I don't think I could live there. I visited Saskatoon and it's a smaller big city that is just fucking beautiful. The old architecture, the river, everything there is so cool. Granted, I've never been to either Canadian coast so my scope is limited. I have family in Ontario, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal, but everyone meets in Regina when we visit for convenience. Driving in Regina sucks. The pretty parts are really pretty, but there are an alarming amount of ghetto neighborhoods that give me a poor overall impression of the town. The people are all great though.

Technically, they actually speak Quebexican in Canada, and not French. They do sound similar, but anyone from France will immediately start laughing upon hearing it.

Montreal nightlife is off the chain.  Cheap beer, and beautiful women.  The skate scene and the spots are really good also.  Only downside for me is that I don't speak french, so getting a job was tough.

Toronto can be awesome also.  A lot of events going on all the time.  It's just really expensive to live. and as mentioned the traffic blows.

They're a dime a dozen, and get priority in the workplace because we're now an accepting culture.

Montreal's the place to be in Canada, hands down. For linguistic issues.. just ask!    seriously tho, putting the winters aside its the best there is and yeah, beautiful women everywhere (that you can actually hook up with without being rich/famous)

Been there a few times for fishing trips and apart from the cold weather and extremely annoying newfie accent its actually not that bad. Lots of great seafood places and everyone grows weed out there. you can ask someone on the street for some bud like your asking for the time.

The French thing made it a nightmare for me trying to find a career type job in the sciences in Ottawa, and is the only reason I wouldn't bother moving to Mtl.

Toronto has been great so far, I'm just getting properly settled in now but already have better feelings about the coming winter hibernation and as for next spring/summer? I'm pretty muched booked up with fun shit to do already.
