dark souls 2 (the successor to the ocarina of time crown)
« on: March 04, 2014, 06:27:45 PM »

if you aren't familiar with the dark souls series, this is an open world dungeon crawler type game. if you were a fan of zelda 64: ocarina of time, you might love this game except darks souls is more like zelda for masochists. the learning curve is a little bit steep but the payoff is well worth it. there are specific parallels in gameplay that can only be experienced by playing it. one i can describe is the combat/targeting system. in the dark souls series, the combat has the ocarina of time feel on steroids. its everything i hoped nintendo would do with the subsequent zelda games but obviously failed to. again i highly recommend this game for any fans of zelda 64 or anyone looking for a challenging game. long story short, you won't regret it.

screenshot comparisons below are thin examples of the similarities that exist between these games.

everyone loves fighting giant skeletons!

if you remembered how the boss battles set up, dark souls has an almost identical structure to the approach to boss battles.
you have to see the one to one comparison in live gameplay.

i'm convinced the dark souls series is paying homage. again the screenshots aren't enough but come on.

Can't fucking wait. This is Gerald, right? It's me, Mike Lindquist. So rad to know that you're a fan of Dark Souls as well. I spent a zillion hours on the first one and I am playing Demon's Souls right now to get psyched for DkS2.

serious contender for game of the year. clocked so many hours already.

the new inventory system is pretty good. also, for the most part the backstabbing in pvp seems to be fixed. out of maybe 10 invasions, i only experience a backstab (lagstab) in one.

I haven't been disappointed so far, 18 hours in. Like the scenery and general atmosphere of the game a lot, despite it being slightly less dark than the predecessor(s).

Anyone beat it yet? This game is so massive and beautiful, fuuuck. The only sad thing is that, much like the first one, now that I've beaten it I can just run through every area with ease, dodging every enemy and heading straight for the boss. BUT, NG+ throws you some serious curveballs. You'll see...

Made me focus a controller. Shit is a bit too ruthless at times.

Pretty damn easy boss fights in between here and there. Jabba the hut, anyone?

i'm in NG+3. pretty painful at this point.

there are some issues with the lock on system which hopefully get patched but besides that, this game is pretty dope.

unbearably hard in some parts but no areas you can't run through if you can't take the beating any longer.

Anyone tried the first add-on content yet? Pondering whether I should get a season pass.

dlc was pretty solid. felt like a dark souls 1 area.
it took me about 4 hours to get through and i summoned help for the bosses.
if you play it ofline you'll get more bang for your buck unless you break a controller trying to beat the gang bang.
you'll know what i'm talking about when you get there.

Bought the season pass and played through the first dlc. I got help most of the time so it wasn't that bad. My mundane character is somewhat uninspiring so I need to change that up a bit.

Bloodborne looks amazing, might have to get a ps4 solely because of it if it's good. Initially got PS3 because of Demon's souls.

Best times were had at the Frigid Outskirts. Somewhat lackluster ending for the dlcs.

What would you guys recommend for a first timer.  I've never played Demon Souls or either Dark Souls.

You get a sense of what to expect from the others if you try Demon's souls.

I would suggest starting with Dark Souls. If you like it, get both Dark Souls 2 and Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls is the hardest of the 3, IMO

That thing scared the fuck out of me, I had to drink several tall cans to get the nerves to take it on for the first time.

The one in Ash Lake is even scarier!

I would say Demon's Souls WAS harder.  I don't know about now that the servers are disconnected.  In Demon's Souls you have to deal with something called "world tendency" which determines a ton of NPC locations, objective availability, and difficulty. Depending on a combination of how many times you died, if there was a living boss in the level (Demon's souls isn't an open world game like Dark Souls 1 & 2, there were 5 or so different levels that you would warp to from the Nexus), and then an average of what EVERYONE else in the world playing the game was doing, you could be fighting enemies at like half HP or everything in the game is essentially a mini boss.  Also, if you want to get the Platinum trophy in Demon's Souls, you have to play through it twice, which is kind of lame.  It is a bit shorter than Dark Souls though.  I liked the lore and endings of Demon's Souls better also.  Try it out.  It's not like you're gonna play King's Field.
