c sharp minor is an awesome scale to work in.
Alot of great disco songs were written in that key.
Try the I IV V I progression in that mode and increase the tension
on any chord as you see fit (adding maj7ths)
A real cool trick to do every so often is to transpose certain chords into major mode
so in the scale of c sharp minor turn the V chord -g sharp minor-
into g sharp major. It gives this really satisfying pull, like a powerful
rise.
Look up slash chords too, they're really fun to play around with.
But yeh definitely try do your own stuff as well as learning other songs,
play around with a simple progression in a jazzy way and get comfortable
with it.
If you can learn to play this and put your spin on it (playing up and down
octaves, slowing/ speeding up, arpeggiating certain chords) you'll be one fine
jazz enthusiast.
