Haha why are people trying to make it sound like Adidas set this whole thing up? Some of you are acting like some marketing dude told Suciu to do this. Pretty sure he just skates there a lot and decided to do this as an ad. I doubt it was some scheme to target the skaters who'd remember the original ad. Some people are reading way too much into this shit, unless there's something Kalis knows that we don't then I still find all of this hate on Suciu/Adidas pretty stupid.
[close]

this. he was probably just skating at love and there happened to be a barrier. Maybe thought, "oh damn remember when people used to skate it like this back in the day?" then just shot a photo on it with the photographer. He has a mean bs noseblunt. Can't think of a better trick for that thing, and obviously the photo was gonna turn out amazing. It did, and they turned it in for an ad. That's probably pretty close to what actually happened, give or take a few details. Wasn't a diss to Kalis, probably wasn't a tribute. I bet it was just more of a nostalgia thing.

God. Who fucking cares. I just typed way too much.
[close]

The photographer (assuming he has seen some skate photos from the last 15 years) clearly based this composition on old photos which framed the Robert Indiana sculpture on one side and barrier on the other. Too bad he didn't hold the shutter open to illuminate more of the background.

The ad itself, like DC's pre-corporate standard layout, features an enlarged photo of the tilted shoe one one side, with a 3/4 page photo on the other. Also, the film edge is visible with the Fuji "RDP" code showing. DC ads always printed the film code, sometimes with the sprocket holes (35mm). This ad may have been shot with a digital camera with the film code added later--typically 120/220 rolls have numbered frames as well.
[close]

I think Chavo hit the nail on the head. It's more the image that Kalis is talking about. The main image is composed by the photographer and ultimately by the marketing person who does the edit for the add. Kalis added trick, barrier, and spot location, but it was the photographer (probably Blabac) who composed how the trick would be shown ultimately. I, personally like the DC add better, although Sucio's trick is fucking sick, I don't think the wide angle shot with the giant Adidas shoe on the side is a good look. Shit just seemed rushed and mediocre to me (and this is my preferred sweat-shop label when it comes to soccer related products). Therefore, if the marketing editor is going for the early DC look he sure is blowing it.

Props to Kalis for coming on slap and addressing some of this. Hopefully he doesn't get pulled in further to where we have to hear an extensive rant.

I'm good. I Enjoy reading the debate.

I'm backing Kalis on this one.

It's not the trick, it's the pretty blatant art-direction rip off. It raises the question - does Adidas have art dudes who would know they're biting a classic ad? Or was it an accident? Either way, not really cool of Adidas.

It's not like Kalis put everyone on blast, he just pointed out that Adidas should step their game up. A totally reasonable call I think.

I dont have time to read this whole thread rn, but if you think this just happened organically and it wasnt a contrived effort to "capture that 90's LOVE vibe", then you guys r just being silly.  I'm with Kalis.
example. i cant cast a spelll or love potion on a girl and she falls total in love for me
but i can show a girl my tv youtube clip on my or her phone. but there's a difference ok

What legacy Adidas has to skate? DC was sold by a big corporation, but made  history in the 90s and helped build a solid identity to skateboarding. Adidas enters the market without historical reference, and wants to COPY the golden years of a skater as Kalis and a brand like DC?

The problem is not Suciu, or photo, but a corporation who can not create their own status in skate, have to imitate to create your identity.

Josh Kalis photo is a lot better. Its RAW.

I think it's great that Adidas ran the ad and I'm sure their art guys are well aware of the Love park history. BUT, this is not a rip off in "art-direction". Congrats to Josh for coming up with the genius idea but dragging a barrier to Love is not art direction. If anything, give the Adidas team some credit. They got Josh Kalis from DC to post their Adidas ad on his Facebook and share it with everyone. Now THAT is smart.

To say that it's a blatant rip off you would have to do the same trick, shoot it from the same angle and apply the same color treatment if you really want to take it all the way. Everyone knows this is not the first time Suciu skates love park. Even the barrier looks slanted. Not similar at all.

That DC ad still has one of the best noseblunts ever pictured. I have some old mags with a double page spread of it somewhere at my parents house (Sidewalk or Transworld iirc) but I would love to have a poster of this shit.

With regards to this debate:

Apart from the fact that it's Addidas, which certainly don't have a history in skateboarding and I can't help but wonder cynically if this is (as others have said) purely just a marketing attempt at capturing that nostalgic 90's-Early 2000's vibe. Either way it's not going to convince me to buy any of their shoes. Sick noseblunt though.
I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.

How long does a company have to be in skateboarding to be considered legitimate? Adidas has supported Mark Gonzales for nearly 20 years (and even sponsored Kalis back in the early-mid 90s) which is just about the amount of time DC has been corny and farming itself out to things like motocross, car racing and mall shops.

That is what I am saying. DC is hardly Lakai or other more core brands. I considered them as one of the giants right next to Adidas and Nike where their riders were making a great living off of it. I figured that was where most of Dyrdek's money was coming from even before Rob and Big.

Adidas has been making shoes for riders for a long time but no one really gave a crap till they did it right in the past years. I remember seeing their shoes in CCS catalogs with like 2 models. Sucui nor Adidas should really be given flack for this. Like people said before, the art direction is the only bad thing I can seem but I don't think it's worth this much attention.

I'm under the impression that Kalis, especially after watching his Epicly Later'd, gets pretty butt-hurt fairly easily. Like if I was him, I wouldn't give a single fuck about some off-handed comment Jason Dill made...but dude gets so offended, he has to get Patrick to make him his own episode so he can "prove" to Dill that he was wrong. The fact that Kalis has been on Slap so much over the past tow days to know that this topic has been on the top of Useless Wooden Toy Banter for those two days is incriminatingly pathetic.
[close]

I forget exactly what you're talking about, is it the "up river" debacle? Either way, Dill is full of shit. If you're taking his side over Kalis on anything, you are off your fucking tits.
[close]

They're both kooks, but Dill was right. Kalis' episode begins by him and Patrick going to his pretty big and nice house. Compare that expensive house in Cali to the little efficiency apartment Jason Dill lives in in his episode, there's a notable upriver and downriver dynamic there.
[close]

Nah, that was just him spitting blood on the walls and being arty. A decent apartment in NY probably costs a bomb.I can't really be fucked to get into it. Just the fact Dill is calling people out for being 'Up river' says it all really.
[close]

For what he had, he probably wasn't paying even 2 grand. New York isn't cheap, but its not to the point wear what he had cost 7 grand a month. Dill can say whatever he wants, so can Kalis. Too bad Kalis tends to say a lot about how butt hurt he is about people not giving a shit about his irrelevant skate career in 2015. DGK sucks.
[close]

Dude was living pretty lavish in his DITL episode. I am sure NY wasn't as expensive then but still, it's not like he didn't get hooked up.

dude is such a cringe worthy try hard i swear. every single interview and encounter with him personally is insufferable but the media made him out to be some savant persona. nobody remembers the osbornes? kookville cameos.

i go get my coffee at staaaaaarbucks, i like cold but i'll get hot. quoted that new york died because of chains. load fart sound.

bringing outside plastic TEMPORARY bjects to inner city street plazas is also questionable may as well be a jump ramp. it's not endemic! the cans, and the tiles, are endemic. also, how else are you supposed to shoot that shot?!? anything significant done at love deserves to have the contextual backdrop.

the saddest thing is that colorway as an intro shoe is garbation.

you're right, but you can't front that while surprising to see after 3 tricks ended up in the final cut, most did not deserve to be in the video of that magnitude. Supreme, FA etc, possible.

If you're running a pro model shoe, can definitely still put out clips (cherry) and 3 tricks are used for your section from a lucrative sponsor, it warrants calling out.

i'm mainly fixating on personality, its forced "bohemian" i'm old enough to see through it all.

o'conners show with olson was talking about him frequently doing "art" things when the cameras were rolling, feeding into it. it's a job but isn't this all about what's real and what's contrived?

Bump this thread after Nutter is done wrecking Love and no one is getting anything there. Monthly advertising content isn't about originality. Appreciate the style, or don't. Even your most bestest tricks ever only last for a moment, then you are rolling away and its just your memory.
