2015: The Year of the Old Man
« on: December 09, 2015, 10:32:45 AM »
AVE's win at 37.

Lance's incredible part in Chronicles 3.

Dressen's resurfacing.

Steve Olson. Grosso. Templeton. Cab.

Old men are hot in skateboarding right now.

I'm sure there are plenty more examples.

I know a big part of it is that the industry is, itself, aging, but it definitely seems to be a trend in coverage and "second-wind" career trajectories.

What do y'all think? Is it a tough time to be a twink in skateboarding?

There are some older dudes in the NFL who are also doing pretty well. Maybe we've learned how to increase athletic longevity a bit.

Lance has always ruled, I enjoyed watching more than just a part in his pool. Eric Dressen was always a favourite.

I still skate with some of the guys I skated with 25 years ago. Nothing has changed.

If anything those old pros spark the interest of those who once rode but lost the love. They need it back and who better to give it to them than their childhood hero's!

Also, social media has a role in keeping some dudes relevant.  Wray and Klein are both rad doing their own brands and still in the game.

I don't like to mention him on SLAP because there's someone here that he owes A LOT of money to.

I used to think that the older these dudes get, the worse they will become (maybe with some I guess),  but most of the older dudes proved me wrong.  Dude's like Guy or Daewon..or fucking Burnquist! omg the shit that guy does on a skateboard at his age is beyond real.  With dudes like them, if you compare their early parts to what they do now its amazing how much they have progressed...age is one thing, but experience is a huge factor.

I think skateboarding have changed in different ways.
Good and better - on one side you have Kids who skate like
real man, you have modern skate robots/ terminaters who
do NBD like nothing any week in free content.
We have legends still skating any day and producing
good footage. You have big money, and underground DIY culture.

I have a crew with +15 friends- all +25 years skateboarding
in the bones - and still loving it.

Skateboarding is better then ever!

Love the Lance Part, Love the vans Video - AVE Part was not my
Favorite - but hey he is 37 and is killing it - congratilation for
TSOTY

Completely agree. I see what Guy and Daewon are doing at 40, specifically, and it gets me hyped. The stuff they put out on the regular is a big motivator and inspiring. Not only are both of those guys active and skating at a high level, they're both still progressing at a high technical level. Not that I could skate at those levels but in relative context I can still be pushing myself to learn new stuff.

I wish the same could be said for Koston.  Half of his new part would have been dork tricks shown during the credits 15 years ago.
