If we had to put everything into perspective like that, we couldn't justify our feelings about most stuff in our daily lives.

UGGH.  I'm glad he's getting paid, but this is such a blow to skateboarding. The suits at nike are taking over.

I hate to say it, but I don't think Lakai will survive this year.

Nick Jensen or not, Nike is still lame.

They have 31 people on their pro team... Jesus. Do they even have an official am team or do they just have some high profile flow guys that maybe get treated a little better? Either way, if Tampa Am last year was any indication, they're easily over 100.

When it comes to Jensen I think that Lakai really blew it not giving him a proper signature shoe. He's easily one of the most tallented skateboarders out there, but they slept on him. Can't hate on Jensen for bouncing from Lakai - hell, that ship's taking on water and will sink soon. Would rather had Jensen on Adidas. Would've been a better fit.

I'm stoked that Kookston is 'on' Isle (at least until he and Guy get their company off the ground) if it helps shift a few planks. Nonetheless, would rather a Chris Jones board.

Agreed. As for Adidas, I think I saw on IG that they hired Paul Shier in some capacity. So that's great for him. Not to rehash the shoe debates but these guys - both the companies and the riders - have to make decisions that they feel best align with whatever future they envision. Sylvain gave a fairly well thought out answer about it in his Kingpin interview:

How do you feel about the involvement of their new investors (Altamont)? Do you think it will affect the way those guys will run the brand?

Its hard to tell. I dont know much about it. Id guess that when youve been a group of close people working together for a long time any involvement from the outside is a stressful time. One thing I always admired about Lakai is that they run their company like skaters. Theyd rather go for it and slam than sit or settle for an easier trick.

The best example of this being Fully Flared. The amount of energy, money and time spent on this project just cant be matched in sales. Its not viable economically and could have killed the company, but it happened and had a huge impact on skateboarding. By taking the standards of modern skateboarding and skate video production to a whole new level it did something huge and to some extent, a lot of popular brands and tricks today come from a reaction to the skating presented in Fully Flared. They built themselves against it. Just like how an artistic movement is often a reaction to the artistic movement that preceded it. I dont think people realise this enough. As independent as you think your views are, there are references and history that led you to think the way you do.

The fact that brands can take risks and loose money on projects is primordial in my opinion. Skateboarding is about trying, a lot.

I have a feeling that lately there has been a change though. Its been harder for skater owned companies recently and theyve had a tendency to take safer decisions. Strangely the bigger companies are now more or less the only ones left are to be able to invest budget into a project at a short term loss. This risky behavior barely exists in the corporate world but is very profitable culturally. Its a tough situation, but its not impossible to be heard, and its important for skaters who are in a position to make a change and to believe in where they come from.

Did anything in particular trigger your decision to move on?

Ive been through some heavy personal stuff recently and I needed to properly think about my future. This made me rethink a lot of things I took for granted and reconsider other options. To be honest I didnt really have anything to complain about during my 11 years of riding for the brand. Lakai treated me well and its thanks to them that I am where I am now.

What I want to know is how much their "flow" guys get paid. I mean is YoSiah Gatlyn said Zero (a struggling board brand) was paying him $300/month to be Zero flow... you gotta think that Nike is paying their Flow guys a pretty decent chunk of change to wear their shoes. Especially with lots of big name dudes choosing to be Nike flow, over taking another shoe does (IE: Rojo leaving Etnies as a pro to Nike flow, I know there's other factors at play but he still could have gone out and got a pro deal with some other brand).

I'm trying to figure out if Lakai is sleeping on people or if they just have no fuckin money.

They must be doing so bad. It's a shame. They were so cool in the early to mid 2000s. I think the problem is they lost their identity once shoes all became required to be vans-looking. They killed the tech-shoe game. They had a few cool looking shoes. I'm speaking in past tense because its clear they are not going to survive.

Lakai - the next shoe company to be revived from the dead by nostalgists.

I always thought he'd stay on Lakai forever. He's one of my favorites so I hope it means a big check but I'm upset   :'(
