last week I saw guy and koston both posted "come on out to the zumiez NYC nike team signing" on their instas, unsurprisingly the comments section blew up with negative responses. later that night I checked guy's page and it was gone, likewise with Koston.

listen, I understand the "dude's are in their forties, let em get paid" argument, but for real what the fuck is this shit? I realize they were probably contractually obligated to post it but goddamn that's gotta suck what's left of your soul out of you. It's like skaters built a goddamn billion dollar industry out of necessity and now it's like we're handing the keys over to Wal-Mart. nike sb's "only sell to core shops" is a thing that existed for like 2 years, don't even tell me their quality is better, you're lying to yourself. Koston's been a kook so who care but it's a bummer to watch Guy turn into this.

$68,800,000 / 505 = $136,237 in net sales per store pet month if all stores did the same in sales (definitely not the case). Not sure how this compares to your local shop but it's interesting to take note of.

More individual store math:

$136,237 / 31 days = $4414 a day in sales.

$4414 / $50 (average price of a board) = 88 boards per day.

or

$4414 / $75 (guessing average cost of shoes these days, not sure) = 58 shoes a day

or

$4414 / $15 (guessing average cost of a shirt?) = 294 shirts

Just thought it was interesting to try and visualize money versus the equivalent in product. Pretty confident in my math, but I might have fucked up somewhere along the way.

Kinda funny how people will hate for doing a signing at Zumiez, but still back Nike 100%. Nike is sooooooo much worse. Sure, Zumiez takes some potential business away from core shops, but they're mostly selling swaggy clothes to swaggy kids who don't skate. And really, part of whats cool about a core shop is that kooks and douches don't shop there nearly as much. Its exclusive, you gotta be in the know. Meanwhile, Nike uses "we only sell to core shops" to establish themselves in skating and then stab those core shops in the back, putting them out of business.

before my local shop had to close its doors, we would do about 1000-1400 on a good day. 4-5 grand is fucking crazy!

I am pretty sure the March 2016 net sales of $68.8 million include their online shop which is what I based my numbers off of.

Either way, the more I look at the numbers the more I realize Zumiez is probably the biggest skateboard shop in the world. Unless someone knows of another place with 505 retail locations?

Turns out they actually have 627 total stores, if not more according to this release from June 2015:

Just think of Zumiez as like a bus. It gets the kids where they need to go and they figure everything else out from there. The rest of the business it gets come from people that you wouldn't want in your local shop anyway.

The reason Zumiez is so big is because certain former skateboarders sold to them in bulk, not caring about fucking over core shops. How far would of Zumiez gone if guys like Rocco and Sole Tech never filled them with product? You think Jamie Thomas gave a shit when he was getting entrepreneur of the year awards on the backs of mall shops?
