Osaka and Tokyo
« on: July 21, 2016, 10:14:00 PM »
I am going to Osaka and Tokyo with my girlfriend. Not going to do too much skating but wouldn't mind info you all want to pass on. Skating or otherwise.

I do have one, very specific, skate nerd request if anyone has anything to share. I really want to skate one of those concrete playground spots that look like they belong in a skatepark. Example:

https://www.instagram.com/p/lop2oRtcvt/

I am told they are all over the place, but if anyone has any suggestions of neighborhoods, it would be much appreciated. With what little skating I will do, this is definitely a goal to skate one!

That playground is in Tokyo. I'll need to spend a little time on google maps to find out exactly where it is again.
There are a lot of playgrounds like that but 90% of them are almost spots. There always seems to be like one small thing that makes it unskateable.

I live in Tokyo now and lived in Osaka for 13 years so I can probably hook you up with whatever you are looking for.
Feel free to hit me up if you want any help.

Any reason you picked Osaka over Kyoto?

Chock - I am actually going to Kyoto and a few other cities. I won't have much time in them so I wanted to focus whatever skate time I can get in Tokyo and Osaka.

Jive - Wow, you delivered. I will definitely be going there. I'll send you a PM.

Osaka really reminds me of SF
Skated Osaka late night with some locals... they had a case of beer and knew english.  I was skating back to my hotel drunk and ran into them, ended up skating for a bit, was told its better to skate at night because of the crowds.

Really had a blast in Japan. For skating, Osaka and Tokyo were obviously the best. Kyoto looked like it had a lot of potential. But as a tourist I really enjoyed some of the more quiet environments. Miyajima and Nara are highly recommended.

Met up with Jive, hurt my knee so we just drank beers while I limped. It was awesome. Thanks again Jive!

Go to the Shred skateshop (the TBPR shop), buy a Japanese skate product to support the scene, and then start pushing around from there. It was the highest concentration of spots I found for sure.

Probably the second hottest environment I have ever skated in. The second I start rolling, I start sweating. Was always fun getting on a subway and seeing people try their best to keep distance from the sweaty gaijin.

Push around Nishishinjuku at night or on a Sunday. It's a total bust, but you can just hit one spot and move on to the next.

ended up having the best time ever in tokyo. skating during the day was pretty tough but skating through the night into the morning was amazing. 10/10 would definitely go back.

only thing i'd suggest to others would be to stay out of the touristy areas when it's busy, even at night. 11 of us got driven to our airbnb from the classic white tile hubba in roppongi by 3 cop vans at 1am just because we didn't have our passports on us.

Okay, so I'm going to tokyo alone for two weeks in January right after new years and I have a few questions...
What's the weather like around that time?  I lived there a loooooong time ago and don't remember much.
Also, how much Japanese is sufficient for survival?  I'm considering contacting an english speaking homestay or is a hostel better?

It'll be cold, like jacket and hat weather, but cold is a relative term depending on where you are coming from. If you're coming some place like Chicago or NYC you'll probably be stoked.
You will be fine with English only. Japanese are really accommodating.

I'm from sunny California...haha!  But it's not like I've never been in the snow before.
I know you live there so it'd be hard to say, but what are your thoughts on homestay vs hostels in tokyo?
Thanks!
