Thrasher Social Media Captions

Whoever writes Thrasher's IG, Twitter, and Youtube video captions comes up with some cringeworthy material, but they really blew it with the one on Yaje's new part

Agreed. This Yaje one is funny.
I recall when they uploaded Jimmy Lannon's Static 4 part and it was clear that whoever wrote the caption didn't really appreciate the part or "get" it but was still trying to write something semi-positive. Some of the first comments were literally people saying how bizarre and lame the caption was (yeah it was that bad) and then I noticed the caption actually got changed later that day. Sorta funny

Phelps writes like every sentence is meant to be a quote that's gonna live forever. A lot of times he doesn't make any sense but he's got his moments. I like his style.

i guess i don't understand why a fakie 5-0 is a switch nollie nosegrind, but that logic isn't extended out to the rest of the tricks...wouldn't a fakie ollie to willy grind be a fakie smith and so on or is just accepted to not over-complicate things

Some names you go by what's going on, like a fakie 5-0 is because you're popping off your tail and grinding on your back truck even though you're moving backwards. It's not a fakie ollie switch nosegrind, even though it kind of is, because that's dumb. In my opinion Paul Hart did a fakie crook because he popped fakie, but assumed regular ol' crook form regardless of stance. I know that's not technically what was going on if you go process style like the fakie 5-0, but it's generally accepted as the name because it's commonly performed backside and everybody knows what you're talking about. Then you have stupid names the creator gave them and you have to just deal with it.

I have to agree with Mattchew and say that after writing captions for parts that rarely separate themselves completely on their own every single day it would be a task to not just say, "Here is ____'s new web part and he kills it. Enjoy" That being said, shit is still corny.

I hate hearing the "Imma try a fakie ollie switch nosegrind then fakie ollie switch manual in a line". I mean what the fuck does that even mean? You can't pop a FAKIE ollie and go into a switch grind or manual. Switch tricks are ONLY considered switch when you POP SWITCH END OF FUCKING STORY!

Just checked, it's the AVE SOTY issue, so April 2016. That issue also had the Jackson Pilz Lunatic Fringe with one of the gnarliest kickflips in recent memory. Great issue overall.

My subscription ran out a few years ago, but I recall that Phelps wrote many of the magazine captions. Most if not all of the Thrasher Skate and Destroy book was written by Phelps and is as you describe--Hellride scrapbook and Cardiel dedication.

Basically Phelps and co. are on tour in Africa, and the brakes on their van fail and they crash into a building and get fucked up.
Phelps then writes about how important music is, what it has been like being a fuck up/addict/thrill seeker since childhood etc. but also writes about sobriety and aging.
He also writes about getting hospitalized in a psych ward and not being able to fly back to the US and what a fucked up experience it was for him, alone in a foreign country just trying to get home.

I get that Phelps the personality, and Phelps the writer, don't appeal to a lot of folks, but I dunno, I think he's so fucking crucial to skating. Maybe I am being naive or just buying into the the "cult of the personality", but Thrasher is important to skateboarding, meaning their ethos of 'skate and destroy', and Phelps is basically the walking embodiment of that, he is Thrasher, and it's cool. I am grateful that we have something like that. Skating is young enough to still have OG legends contributing to the culture--not many other art forms/activities/hobbies/sports/whatever have that going for them.

Like, I know he's a walking Quaalude who babbles too much and occasionally wears a fedora, but I choose to look past all that and just respect him at a distance for being so fucking stoked on skating, still, at fifty whatever years old and his vision of what skating should be--gnarly, painful, terrifying, and insane. He's a presence/force in our world and you gotta respect that shit.

Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised by this article and his writing in it. It's got the classic "fuckin' hellride, brother!" vibe, but also something more sentimental and abstract feeling. I've gone back to it multiple times over the past few months and continually enjoy it.

Edit: if that shit is too small to read (I think if you save the jpegs you can zoom in and be able to read them easily enough?) I can just email people the zip file or something. I am pretty technologically inept, unfortunately.
