Old School setup truck size question
« on: March 16, 2017, 01:58:12 AM »
I want ride an old school shape like the jeremy klein dream girl and skate mostly street. Ive heard 149s are the size truck for the board even though its the deck is 9.5. Ive also seen a mike v setup video where he's rockin 149 trucks on a similar size board. I've also been told 169s, anyone got any advice?

Thing is that those old school shapes are 9.5 at widest points, you'll need trucks that will fit decks at their narrowest point.
I would go with 149, that was what I was riding as a kid and considering that you'll skate street you don't want very heavy setup.
Another thing is what wheels do you plan to use, big and wide old school style wheels or smaller modern shapes.
If you go with smaller narrow wheels then you can consider 159 trucks.
Hope this helps.

It's really preference. I've got a 9.8 cruiser and using ace 66's on it and I think it's perfect.

This, for the most part.

I've a pair of 159s (8.75") on an 8.47" with pretty wide cruzerish wheels and I can just barley see a tip of the front wheels when I'm looking down, at my board, where the wheels are, to see if they are sticking out...otherwise, cruising and slapping around, I don't notice it at all.

They used to have that deck at a local shop and I held it up to my 159's. They seemed to be about right or maybe even a bit on the small side. It prolly tappers down to about 9" iirc.

The Dream Girl board is 8.75 over the rear trucks.  you'll want to use 159's for the best fit

Do you think I could get away with using 149s? or would they be too small?

Like if it would be like 129s on an 8.25 too small, or 139 or 8.25 too small

I own this board and skate it all the time . I had 149 indys and they're so small it's silly.  I rode it that way for months. Now I'm getting 169 hollow indys. It is close to 9" at the trucks, 169 is great, since I ride 149 on an 8.25 as well. Also. Klein makes some other awesome shaped decks that are a little wider like 9.75" (vegetables and portrait)...if I ride one of those next
169 is perfect while the 159 to me is a bit small.
JK makes the best decks. My dream girl is pink dipped and the screened art never looked so good.

I'm thinking of picking up some thunder 151 (8.75) trucks - does anyone know if they actually turn? (unlike most thunders I've tried)

They turn. Its a different turn to Indy/ Ace but they turn nice and sharp. I prefer the Thunder turn with a an 1/8" riser. 151s are a rad wider truck. Light.

I never rode 169s, even during '80s when everything was 10x30". My legs have a narrow tread (if I walk in a straight line, my feet will line up right to the edge of that line), so I'm prone to running over my wheels. Then again, it's all personal preference.

I'm skating two Boards that are 9.25 with 159s and they fit and skate great. 149s would probably feel a little small. Trust BMCs knowledge of taper measurements on decks.
Man the long board truck thing killed indy for me. I was willing to set aside the racism, but long boarding, gtfo... - DH

Id go a hair wider than the narrowest point.....I firmly believe in lining up perfect but with shaped you can get away with it and eventually you may swap it out to something else....

This. He convinced me to get 159s instead of 169s on my 8.9" Jason Jessee deck and it's a perfect fit.

I threw some 149s i had laying around on it for now, but if anything ill probably size up to the 159/8.75 range if i need it. from the sound of it i think 169s would be a hair too big. thanks for the advice guys

159 will work. The 149 was a joke but 169 for me is the best choice. Have fun with it !
