He has a great photo feature in the August 2004 issue of Transworld, which also has a super sick cover of Rodney Mullen (primo slide through windex on a glass fun box, shot from below).

Despite not having seen that issue in well over a decade, I have a distinct memory of Sturt's self portrait in there: crazy colored sky/clouds and he is wearing a suit and holding out a silver platter with a severed finger on it.

Sturt fucking rules. Great filmer too.
[close]

Even though DHS's name is on the cover, I'm pretty Seu Trinh shot the Rodney Mullen cover
[close]
Yeah, I'm looking at it right now. Would Sturt even shoot anything remotely like this.
maybe, don't they say you can drown in a cpl inches of water?

If you read my post I didn't say sturt shot the cover, just mentioned as an aside that it was a great cover in addition to the sturt piece in the issue. Sorry for the confusion but I think anyone who knows sturt's photography would know that's not his work haha :)

Ffej has a funny story about DHS sneaking into some NSA contest in Arizona in the days of way-back. Frank Hawk is on the PA yelling at everyone to stop skating so they can start the first groms heat. It clears out. DHS in disguise drops in and slams on purpose with concealed fake blood bag that explodes all over. Screaming children, etc. Second-hand story, so I can't swear to every detail, but it sounds like the kind of thing missing from skateboarding these days - a sense of humor.

Sturt shooting Rowley is a match made in heaven/hell
I remember a sturt (color photo ) sequence of Rowley in Thrasher, think part was the cover, but the caption said something like "Geoff Rowley back 3 into the Matter Horn, take this out of the mag and staple it to your fucking eye balls" Something like that, wish I had that one

I always thought the photo looked a lot gnarlier than the footage, but that's not saying much because the video is still gnarly as fuck

Oh hell yea, thanks for posting that cover. Sturt is a master, take note that whenever you see a photo or video of something steep it never comes across as grarly as it really is, you need to see it to understand how steep the hill bombed was or bank ollie into etc. was. This shot lets you see straight away how steep and insane it is."Masterlensmen" for sure

This one's actually a little false as the camera angle makes the bank look steeper than it actually is! Cleverly done but if you look at the bushes they seem a little off.
They laughed when I told my friends that I was going to be a comedian.....well they are not laughing now!

I think the expressway was brand new and not opened to traffic. Skate wise, I think they build some kind of quarter / kicker ? I could be wrong.

There's tons of mythical stories about this dude, Dave Swift i think had one about living with him and getting into an argument about buying toilet paper, so Sturt started taking misprinted shirts from where they worked (T&C Surf i think) and using them instead of tp and throwing them on the roof when he was done..

I'm not sure about back then, but it's currently an unused exit off the I-5 just north of the 76 in Oceanside, and yes, it's a transition built up to the wall below the rail. There was still one there years ago but I think it was on the other side (the inside of the curve). I have a feeling it was never used as an exit because it doesn't really go to anything below it that I remember. It just ends in the dirt by the bike trail/creek. I love stumbling across legendary spots.

Just to contribute since I’m a huge Sturt fan. https://www.instagram.com/p/B0EWrwQlUkv/?utm_medium=copy_link

Matt Hensley has amazing stories with Sturt. Randomly getting a phone call being told that he’s going to “Walk the Line” that day.

And On the topic of Rowley, this is a dope story.

Since I’m French and never went to California
I looked it up on Google Maps following your informations :

I’ve read that Sturt would sometimes dress up as a worker in order to be undercover. Imagine him standing by the side of the road with an orange vest on, shooting pictures of Hensley

(EDIT : somehow I didn’t see Trickflip’s post, sorry !)

Not really the angle, the lens. All that Rowley stuff that looked warped like that was shot on a tilt shift lens.
