too bad dortmund almost had it, 1 point in madrid is still something you can be proud of.

Was that second goal for Dortmund a hand ball?  I couldn't tell but it looked like he hit the ball forward with his upper arm.

Yaya Toure is my favourite player to watch right now.
Kinda like football's version of Brian Anderson.

Now crossing all fingers and tying knots to penises that Real gets eliminated.

I would say that hope is highly unrealistic.

I love Yaya at times and other times he drives me crazy.  He needs to defend more and his passing isn't the greatest for a midfielder. I think this is why City's been struggling.  You got Yaya and Barry who can't pass a lick and with Silva out it compounds the problem of controlling the midfield.  Yaya is a boss on the ball that's for sure.

As much as I dislike Real I want to see them go thru.  It only makes for more interesting games.

Credit to Celtic, but Barca needs a plan b.  Teams will continue to park that bus and hit them on the counter.  It worked for Chelsea last CL and now Celtic.  Watching that game I couldn't help but think that Barca just needs one tall dude in the middle.  Kick it into him and let him get some headers.  This would also offset the defense so they can play that or tiki taka thru.  Fuck it go get Andy Carroll!

I'm not that surprised at the Celtic result. The fact is that Barca are amazing at certain things that most other teams can't do ("tiki taka") but are pretty shite at a lot of things that less talented teams do quite well (defending balls into the box and counter attacks). Barca have seemed so 'dominant' up until now not because they kept the ball, but because they had the defensive solidity through Pique and Puyol to stop many of the chances they gave up from turning into goals. Now they're a bit less resilient and other teams pretty much know the formula to beat them - get an early goal from a set piece, defend like crazy in tight formation around the box and when they start to push for goals towards the end of the match, hit them on the counter. They'll still qualify but I doubt they'll win the champions league this year.

i was always bummed on mascherano going to barca, but not so much anymore lolololol. dude should be a defensive mid and not on the back line.

alll champions league aside, the redbulls/dc united game should be epic considering the snow. i know, mls is shit blahblahblah. should have grabbed some last minute tickets, prob could have gotten them for dirt cheap.

this site is really good, you can find reviews of all csl matches, but they are too short in my opinion. still you get to see all the goals.

obviously. but when both of your actual centre backs are hurt, you gotta make due. I don't see what the big deal is anyway, it was a meaningless match for barca. and i wouldnt go as far as to say that teams have figured out the formula to beat barca. if the formula largely depends on barca having a bad day, hitting 5 posts/crossbars, missed penalty shots, missing centre backs, and your goal keeper having the game of his life (as did petr cech for chelsea and forster for celtic), then yes i suppose they have found the secret sauce!

this is also why barca should be more afraid of weaker teams that will resort to the 9-1 formation. teams like man u, madrid, and bayern have too much skill and pride to sink to that level.

Celtic-Barca was a fairly meaningless game but I think this is a more of an issue than you're making it out to be. Sure they had a "bad day" but teams like celtic and chelsea have shown that playing that 9-1 formation well enough can consistently force them into having a bad day. Chelsea did it over two legs and Celtic almost achieved the same result (1 win and 1 draw), although they were robbed of a 1-1 at the last  minute at the Camp Nou. The point is that the predictability of Barca's playing style gives mediocre teams a clear path to beating them in one off games.

Sitting back rarely gets you a clean sheet with top teams. And if they do score against you, the chances of you scoring 2 or even 1 are microscopic. This was an anomaly, can't say it wasn't. And how can you put Celtic and Chelsea in the same sentence? They are worlds apart, playing style notwithstanding...

Sure it was a bit of an anomaly, and still required plenty of luck, but with Barca's depleted defense the chances of scoring two goals against them are certainly not "microscopic". They are literally a complete shambles when it comes to defending corners and freekicks. Look at how many times they've come back from behind in La Liga this year against inferior teams.

If you play 10-20 games against Barca in that style you would probably still lose more than half of them, but Chelsea and Celtic (two teams with vast differences in quality, as you said) have shown that deploying those tactics in one-off games or cup ties gives barca a lot of problems and can effectively bridge the talent gap between the two teams. The fact that Chelsea and Celtic are so different and yet achieved almost the same results using the same tactics just proves my point.

Anyway, enough about that. I'm excited for Chicharito getting some playing time and goals in Man U's new setup. He's got to be one of the best goalscorers in the premiere league and is finally getting his due now that Rooney's taking on a bit of a deeper role. He kind of looks like a muppet though.

Poor, poor Arsenal as usual...

Crystal Palace + Ian Holloway?  Love it.  If QPR stays up and Palace gets promoted there will be fucking 7 teams from London in the top flight.

I'm starting to think United are too strong this year.  Chelsea are starting to pay for the lack of goals from Torres, but I think Chelsea were clearly the better team yesterday...unlike the game against Swansea.

My favorite english rivalry (as a neautral) next week.  Spurs v Arsenal.  I can see Spurs winning this one, with Bale doing the damage.
