Is this the beginning of the end?
« on: November 20, 2017, 07:54:08 AM »
Just been seeing from my local scene that the culture of skateboarding is starting to kind of dry up. With all the big company's starting to fold and the outside perception of skateboarding changing, what's happening? Now when I go to the park there's always 20 scooter kids ages 10-17 running the whole park. Even the younger kids that do skate all look up to the Revive videos and braille scene. Do you guys feel this shift of the tao of skateboarding and where do you think it's taking our beloved wooden partner in crime?

Those places are scooter parks not skateparks. (Im happy as long as the parks keep getting built, scooter users bring the public use stats way up.)  That's who mostly uses the space.  And they don't like using the bowl either. So be it.  More street parks.  Skateboarding is an old dog about the town.  It'll get by.  (believe it or not, there was a pro scooter dude with his sig. scooter no lie around my park for a bit.  He had a beer gut, tatoos and cigarettes and the whole 9.  I was so bummed at him.)

Once all the legends from the 70s-00s are dead, there will be no one but cucks left and the industry will go up in flames with faggotry.

people always seem to call for the end but it never comes so who cares?

i will say i was a bit perplexed when i saw a local underground pool tagged with "braille skateboarding". i always assumed when kids got old enough to tag they would be past that shit. another time i was skating with this guy who must have been near 20 if not in his 20s and he got way too excited about being at the local park of some youtube helmeter.

Am I the only one who sings the lyrics to "The End" by The Doors,

Your not the only one GAY

I was having this convo yesterday with one of the doods at ripped laces.

Neither of us had an answer, but we both drew a similar conclusion.

That conclusion was basically nobody knows where the fuck skateboarding is heading?

But it sure has changed, that's undeniable.

And also a big reason alot of us cling to "our era" of skating, which for me is the 90's/early 2000's

That's my heyday.

Skateboarding is a lot like music; everyone thinks their ''era'' was the best, yet good shit is constantly coming out. You just gotta look for it.

Teach skate lessons at the scooter parks.

"Save" skateboarding and make some extra pocket change on the side.

the sheer amount of really amazing skateboarding and skateboarding content posted every. single. day. is a testament to how big its gotten...you're crazy to think skating is shrinking cause your local park doesn't have a scene.  It's global now and it's growing every year.  Just wait for the first legit marketable pro to become a viral "personality" .....it'll blow up just it did in 2003

Baseball and basketball participation rates vary as well, but such a significant fraction of kids play that shit that it doesn't really disturb the perception of participation. Probably the same with skateboarding at this point, just some shit that kids do, a little more here, a little less now, a little more later. Scooters will go the way of the rollerblades of course, but then again rollerblades are about to make a comeback...

yeah really funny how people will use one park/scene as a example as to how "skateboarding is dead" or some bitter bullshit like that... even with all the media, big corporate brands skateboarding is more alive than ever worldwide.. yeah im not denying the change its had in N America but boo fucking hoo - your little scene is dry/stale dead while other scenes across the globe are fucking thriving.

It probably is but fuck it. As long as I can get a decent board , a pair of shoes , and spend an afternoon dicking around with my friends on wooden planks I don’t care what skating does. Isn’t that the point ?

Everyone takes skateboarding way too seriously as if it changes the world or stands for something or is this single entity that moves and changes and can die. Skateboarding is riding a wooden toy, that’s it. The entire business of skateboarding could die tomorrow and I will wake up and go ride my toy. Nobody controls skateboarding except you, the purpose of skateboarding is the activity of doing it. That’s it. Skaters take scootering way too seriously, who gives a fuck if people ride two wheeled toys instead of four. Skateboarding could use a good purge on the business end, way too many pros have no brand loyalty and quit to start their own brand so it’s an influx of useless brands. None of the brands who did their time can survive because new hit guys keep quitting and starting new brands and saturating the market. There’s a lot of weird egos in skating holding everyone back people want to be in control of presenting skateboarding in certain ways and it’s impossible, everyone needs to just let go and chill a bit.

Death is good, it means nobody is paying attention to us. Skating has died a few times already, and every time it has come back stronger, better developed and more deeply embedded into culture than it was before. The Olympics are going to change everything, in good ways and bad. They're only a few years away now, so enjoy it while it's quiet.

Skateboarding I've noticed that older people are picking it up. With easy access to everything and it's popularity not surprised they influence people. I did once see a guy take a female co-worker home while wearing a Braille shirt.

It's crazy how popular skateboarding, "Brands" are but how few people are actually out skating, especially the streets.  Vans, Thrasher, and Supreme are everywhere on the east coast, but not a lot of kids out, especially once the temperature dropped.
