Awesome way to start the day! Thanks chops! Olson was/is awesome. Still watch his parts. Unique style and trick selection. All time underrated guy. Down to earth makes him even cooler

Great interview, as always. I'm struck by how mediocre or at least non-elite he felt he was. I'd always seen him as a standout in a larger group of standout skaters.

This quote is absolutely amazing.

"Around 2000, for about a year or so, I became a disciple of this spiritual teacher in China. This is when I pretty much learned how to mediate, by following the teachings of this guy and the Falun Gong tradition. These are exercises you’re supposed to do in order to achieve enlightenment. It was a huge movement over in China with millions of followers where the guy basically had to go underground because of the government feeling threatened by him.

I’ve since disassociated myself from the group but there is a tradition within the Falun Gong where you wear all one color. Different monks wear different colors, like all-red, all-yellow or all-orange. I remember reading that in a book somewhere and because I was so into at the time, I figured I’d rock an all-yellow sweat suit, too. I didn’t even care. That was for only about a year, though.

I still remember going to Slam City Jam that year and wearing completely neon orange from head-to-toe. People thought I was out of my mind. They were looking at me like I was an alien or something. I remember the only person who thought it was cool was Mark Gonzales. (laughs)"

As someone who had a strong conspiracy theory phase, it’s really dope to hear the story behind that ‘mass mind control’ clip. Also, it’s really refreshing to see that when he left professional skating, it seemed like he stopped following skating entirely. There’s something so entirely honest about it.

i always loved this dude since 'that's steve olson folks' and bowie.
or 'one way or another' blondie in a parking garage.
when i lived in olympia there were rumors of gaps he'd jumped, never knew he was from WA by his footage.
always loved his glasses, hair kit, funny clothes kit.
that 'steve olson is schizo off his meds for foundation' is hilarious.
tha'ts almost crazier than being crazy.
i thought his gf filmed the roof boardslide?
i love that he tried it while the people inside cowered and called the cops. 90s skating was savage!

Tentacles was the second or third video I ever owned so his part was just burned into my brain.
Also, I actually kinda liked it for its quirkiness but I remember Leigh Peterson got a lot of hate for his part in that video & sure enough he was never seen again.

Pretty funny how when Chops brought up Heath, Olson genuinely seemed to have not even thought about him or heard his name in over a decade.

Modern(& future) skateboarding could use more personas like this guy.

This reminds me how "modern" era skaters are so bland. Skating used to have real characters, now we have a bunch of boring fuccbois.

Steve Olson made fun of me at the Sound Factory in San Francisco once and I've been sore at him ever since.

This quote really stood out to me: “I’m honestly proud that I even got to be a pro skater. It’s such an amazing opportunity that I was given. So many people have to work a job they hate, just to scrape by. I got to do something for the first half of my life that I love! I got paid to skate! Yeah, it can be hard work but I was already doing it for years for free…. I don’t even know if “proud” is the right word, more like “thankful”.
Chops, if you’re reading this, please make a book with all the CB interviews. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

This kickflip for a Union Wheels ad back in 1995 was monstrous! The blunt-shut is also killer.

Anybody else a little bit disappoint Steve Olsen is a mild and well adjust guy. I was kinda hoping for Lennie Kirk without the homophobia. Or at least confirmation on the Hubba on acid thing.

That's funny, cause 90s skaters were considered bland compared to 80s skaters. It's just that you had a few characters like Olson, Woodstock, or Laban. I'd say it's the same in every era.

he also ollied those stairs barefooted. it might've even been a heelflip but i think he worked those stairs in shoes and did a straight ollie shoeless.
for whoever said he's well adjusted, kind of but he grew up w/ a dad who slept in a pyramid. so he's kinda on some new age-y oddness. not necessarily wrong in any way but he's tripped out w/ or w/out hallucinogens.
thought it was endearing when he's like 'i was proud of my hubba accomplishments, don't credit shrooms'.
think it's rollling thunder where he does a line at the san diego greyhound bumps and his upper body is doing the coolest gesticulations. he's wearing like baggy camo and a longjohn shirt and his hands are expressing something.

Chrome Ball crushes it and Olson is rad. Great read as usual with CB. I also like the part about Gonz being the only one stoked on the all orange fit. Of course Gonz would be hyped on something like that! Haha

don't know why I never heard about that guy at the time after seeing his parts posted in this thread, maybe because there were no internet back then and i started to smoke weed, in a far away country, he's one of the best of the 90's for sure !

Honorable pro skater who went out while still on top.  Ironic that he should ask how Heath, who also pulled an Olson, is doing these days.

I had this board. Seems kooky now. I loved that one skatepark line in Fulfill the Dream that started with the kf into the bank, then frontside flip the box etc.
Now, we used to say we put on our tights to put on the world. So I don't think it tarnishes the image at all.
