How do you tighten skate hardware?
« on: December 27, 2017, 08:05:35 AM »
Me and my friend were discussing skateboard hardware - bolts - and for us interesting question opened - is there a correct way to tighten the hardware? What effect it leaves? Does it matter? Do you pay attention how you do it?

Furthermore, this can be expanded into the order how the bolts are tightened. Tightening all the way one by one, or following a sequence like bolts are tightened on flanges - see here http://www.piping-designer.com/index.php/disciplines/mechanical/83-stationary-equipment/pipe-flanges/102-bolt-tightening-procedure

Poll made to acquire some hard data to draw conclusion about trends and decide whether topic should be addressed further.

Turn by nut to avoid stripping, I thought this was common knowledge.

Turn by nut, turning by bolt head always bit/lifted the grip for me. Tighten diagonally just because I'm used to tightening handlebars this way

Turn by nut, to avoid griptape swirl.

Thank you for input so far.

I'm not the brightest person technically - I have been turning by the bolt head - and then wondered why griptape is swirled up. The reason - it was just more convenient to turn with screwdriver/allen key, and I still do not have  a skate tool. Using a wrench to hold the nut in the truck base pocket is rather inconvenient.

This and I cute the griptape around the nut hole to avoid swirls. With philip I turn the nut and with allen I twirl both with a silver tool or the screw with the allen key
Nothing I do deserves more than an iphone camera.

It dosn't matter if you turn the screw head or nut as long as you use elbow grease.  The thing is to tighten one most of the way and then tighten the bolt diagnol and keep going like that. -trucks will go on straitest that way imo

The most important part is to rub the excess grip against the head of your penis.

jk, i was trying to find some pictures of the double allen key diamond hardware, one allen key used for the bolt, one for the funky allen topped nut.
