Beggining to skate, which brand to choose?
« on: March 19, 2018, 02:32:12 PM »
Hey, so my friends and I want to begin to skate and we want to buy decent skateboards. We're looking for a good quality to price ratio. I've been thinking about buying the alien workshop veritas complete skateboard (7,75"). Is it any good? Or should I build a skateboard out of some parts and if, which brands? (Our budget is around 90$)

Dad you're embarrassing me

Buy a complete. If you are older than 12 you might want a wider one.

I've heard this website is where you want to ask for recommendations:

There are so many brands to choose from these days. If you want to be a rail-wounded skater you could look into something like this:

I can't vouch for it but I wish I had something like this 20 years ago when I was skating LOVE. Will you be skating street or mega ramp?

Go to a shop

$30 shop deck (8.25 - 8.5) with a 14.25 or 14.5 wheelbase
$40 indy's (144 - 149) You might as well start him out on indy's.
$35 Bones STF 54mm V5
$20 Indpendent Black Bearings (Or save $ and get mini logo for $10 - With the long term goal to get swiss 6)
$3 shop hardward

$128 plus tax. The shop is hyped, and so is your friend.

Don't listen to any of these guys. Demand Plan B quality.

I would recommend
Shecks plan B deck 7.375x33
Phantom 8.0 inch trucks
Cortina Nakel Smith signature bearings
Independent wheels (ride the best, fuck the rest)
2" hardware, I only trust Lowe's, fuck Home Depot
Plan B die cut griptape (I usually just DM Chris Cole for some when I need it)

You'll be pro in no time bud, don't forget to like and subscribe!

Those phantom trucks... the shop that I hung out at in 2001 had a DNA account, and everyone there rode them. It was one of my best summer of skating haha. The Phantom trucks were blue, with the round logo, were probably 7.75 and were not the phantom 2's.
I found a set on a complete at the thrift store, contemplated buying them for nostalgia, but in the end left the past in the past.

Slap used to have a questionnaire just for occasions such as this.  If you want a proper recommendation, we need data.

Please provide: age, sex, weight, height, shoe size, favorite color, and a picture of your sexiest female relative.  (male will work too, we're progressive like that)

Please reply in full, with either three "praise Gall"s, or three "fuck Berra"s, and we'll get you set up properly.

$175

Element Donny Barley Deck
Indys
Spitfire 54s
Reds Bearings
Shorty's Hardware

In retrospect I probably should have started on one of the cheaper/smaller Powell or DNA christmas completes like the shop guy told my parents, cause the thing was a damn boat for me but it's what I wanted.

Blind reaper complete was my first.
Go with a complete for your first board or a 9.0 grosso board

You're the dick dude, it's called Remive.

If you're not feeling Remive, definetly go with a Mutilation Skateboards Vinne Bahn Pro Model. Dudes the best, plus he's trying to pay for braces.

Think team deck with brown base/raw destructos, pig bearings, and planet earth wheels (I think 54’s) Had to hit the local hardware shop for bolts. Age 14 in ‘99.

Don’t at all remember the cost.

Zero team deck, destructo trucks, reds, and the wheels elude me. Black with a thin yellow ring around 2004... Maybe rictas? 139$

Powell Mike McGill with gullwing magnesium trucks, can't remember the wheels but I want to say 60mm slimeballs...

Get a Real deck, spitfire wheels, independent trucks and some good old generic abec 3 bearings.

Have fun!

i had a blind reaper complete at first and then i bought this setup (i was 12):
plan b p-rod deck
venture rasta trucks
bones party pack 100s wheels
kept the bearings and the hardware

it was ~$150

all these people recommending trucks without knowing what kind of wheels he is getting?

they started color coding wheels and trucks so you know which ones are compatible.  Pick you wheels first and make sure you get trucks that are the same color so they fit properly.
