I used to just get reds or whatever cheap bearings but then splurged and got Swiss ceramics about 7 years ago and they are still amazing. It’s an expensive purchase but it is super worth it. If you clean them every so often they last forever and just feel so much better.

Bones bearings for the win, original swiss the most common and long lasting, always with my shields ON.

But I know so many people ride without shields which might sound louder but don't seem to last and run slower.

Any other takers on the shields ON / OFF debate???

(And yes I did read the other twenty pages of this thread)

I've had some swiss 6 for so long the shields wore out. Otherwise, I keep shields on.

i used to many bearings without shields and they'd eventually break... i began to keep shields on about 7-8 years ago and had bearings last me a  long time

Back on a set of Bronson G3 because, despite popular SLAP opinion, I have had only positive experiences with them.

Bones low to mid priced bearings have failed me repeatedly in recent times, and seems like the whole REDS lineup is hot garbage compared to how they used to be. It’s a bummer because OG REDS used to be such a reliable budget bearing. If anyone have any insight or theory as to why quality seems to has taken a dip I’d be interested to know.

I recently bought Super Reds for fun (I have swiss 6's thats 7 years old or so), and they were oiled so much from factory that after day one, they got super dirty (on the outside ofc). The shield also came off one of the bearings while skating.

Reds big balls here because that's all that's in stock at the shop. They're fine.

Does the shields shrinking phenomenon happen on every bearings ?
Are there models that don't suffer from this disease ?

Just an observation - I have Super Reds on one board and Swiss 6 on the other.  Both were setup at the same time and have roughly the same amount of skating on them.

The Super Reds are slightly faster and WAY smoother than the Swiss 6

Gave up on Bronson G3s about 2 months after picking them up. The shields all bent within a month, I skated them shieldless  after that. They felt smooth but slow if that makes sense. Tried cleaning and lubing with speed cream but they basically felt the same.

I've been skating Reds Big Balls for the past two weeks now and they feel great. They feel fast and loud, better than I remember the G3s feeling. Its been a while since I've skated regular reds so take this with a grain of salt but I feel like the big balls are a lot better.

I’m on some Indy Blacks that I got in early 2017. I got a set of rush abec 9(looked exactly like indys)for 10$ to replace them but the indys keep going strong.

Bearings spacers in reds?

I always use spacers if I got them.

Winter salts coming soon. If both bearings are working together they have a better chance of crushing and spinning out debris.

Finally caved and bought swiss after years of wanting them but not wanting to pay.

Not worth the hype, just get the middle level bearings.

OG bones reds, no shields. Board goes fast, no problems. I have always just got reds took the shields off, no maintenance and they last a long time.

I use spacers in my soft cruising wheels, but of the last sets of spitfires I’ve had, one or two wheels out of each set would have a core that was too wide to fit the spacer properly, so I haven’t used them in my hard wheels in ages. But despite having no evidence, I believe they make my cruising wheels way more efficient.

are bones ceramic reds or swiss 6 better? one one hand swiss 6 have bigger balls and are built better, and ceramic reds are a different material altogether.

anyone got an opinion/buying advice?

I went from couple years old Swiss 6 to Swiss ceramics and difference was noticeable. Not sure how much of difference there would be if both sets were brand new. Swiss ceramics while being awesome bearings might be overkill for typical street skater speed wise. If you do occasional maintenance on your bearings (if you use more expensive bearings you should) Swiss ceramics will outlast all others and be faster most of the time, for me this is biggest plus of ceramics.
You can't go wrong with Bones Swiss or Bones Swiss 6, if you are able to get discount on Swiss ceramics or have means to get them go for it.

I've never had swiss ceramics, but I did switch from regular to ceramic ron's rockets when I was skating Upland's full pipe. I noticed it on first drop in and never pumped hard unless I wanted to die. I still have the same set in a bowl board, but I've gotten used to the speed and can better control it.

Had a theory that if I kept up with a couple beater sets of bearings (cleaning and lubing) I’d have 8 winners long enough to justify the short money. Not the case at all. Board feels thuddy and my best spinning wheel leaves much to be desired. I am giving my theory 1 last crack with actual brand name Indy GP-Bs. If it doesn’t work out I’ll give Santa some money to bring me Swiss

Basing your view of namebrand bearings off of the cheapest indy bearing might not be the best idea?

anyone try dry-lubing their bearings before? i’ve had somewhat success and have swiss 6 coming my way. i don’t know how long they will have been sitting on a shelf, so i am considering cleaning and re living with either speed cream or dry lube. i’ve heard the benefits of dry lube (less dirt accumulation, freer spin and faster break-in) for reference i would be using wd-40 specialist dry lube.

anyone got thoughts or opinions?

Not looking to judge all namebrands. I just wanted to see how far a serviced bearing could take me. Tried no names with no luck. The GP-B is actually the most expensive Indy bearing and the max I think one should spend on a bearing you should have to take care of regularly. I picked those as my middle road brand name bearing because they are designed to be serviced
