So I did the can the kid keep up with swiss bearings test?

Barely. We did about 2.5 miles. I'm so happy the kid can mash across town with minimal instructions.

I just got to get him on a bigger bike somehow. He can't bomb big hills in a straight line.

He is the best wing man of all times though. Math machine always has been. It's good to be the uncle 😂

The only way some pros would work for their pay, assembling their signature product to sell to fans at super hiked up prices.

Not bearing related, but I recall seeing a few things over the years, Lance Mountain always doing something by hand in super limited runs, and Mike V doing custom grip jobs on those signature street axe shapes among others.

Back to bearings now though.

I am seeing so many fake Bones Swiss out there now too, even having all the stickers "Skate Rated" and updated look but often just little things, along with the fact they are being sold by random dudes and not in skate shops or authorised accounts.

Anyone else seeing or noticing this?

I had a set of Bones Swiss that had gotten really gummed up due to putting totally wrong kind of lubricant in them and leaving them outdoors. They are maybe 12 years old and not been used at all for a few years.

I figured I might as well try to salvage them, so I disassembled them completely and soaked them in mineral spirits. Didn’t work. Soaked them in acetone, came out perfectly clean. While putting them back together I was thinking about what it is that makes these special, I mean most bearings are metal balls in metal grooves, but I know the tolerances can be different, maybe the metal used is different as well? The cages shouldn’t affect much I assume. So I was thinking maybe whatever was special about the Swiss when new must have worn out over the years, but who knows. Any way, I put them back together, lubed them up with some pretty fluid stuff that came with some electric clippers and damn, they are really fast again. Noticeable difference to the Bones Reds I had.

Swiss are something else.
take what small comfort there may be left
seize what you love and damn all the rest

Decided to retire my 5 year old set of Swiss, and just ordered a set of Swiss 6's. Pretty stoked to try them out and see how they compare to the regular Swiss.

Anyone who works at a shop gotten ahold of the new Bronson Ceramics? I've seen one or two shops online have them. They look like they're going to be pretty pricey and I'm not in any hurry try try another Bronson but who knows.

My Swiss 6 needed breaking in.  Give them some time.  When I put them in I was disappointed - but then after a week or so they really came around.

I got Bronson G2s around March this year pretty much cause they were orange and I thought they were cool. They were great then slowed down b/c of dirt pretty quick. Cleaned and lubed once, now most of them slowed down again and I ended up putting in my previous set of Mini-Logo bearings cause they still spin. I'm convinced Los Angeles is just too dirty to have bearings last long.

I'll probably clean them again just cause I have the supplies.

Nice, I wanna try mini logos next. I hear great things for the price.

One thing I notice about Reds is how smoothe they are compared to my other cheaper bearings. They may not be the fastest among the under $20 group, but they feel put together so well. It’s weird with them, they like get better with time, grime and dirt. Whereas those cheapshots seem to start out super fast, but then get worse with time, as expected. A few weeks in an I want to clean the spits to get that like new feel, but with reds I never think that till a year in. Cheapshots are half the price though, I need to compare apples to apples with spitfires $20ish bearing. Reds arent as fast as the cheapshots, but much smoother and “tighter feeling”.

Lost the top washer for my set of bones bushings a while ago so I never set them up.

Anyone know the exact size of the flat washers they come with? Otherwise I'm gonna have to spend some time walking around the hardware store this weekend.

Thanks.

You can run the bones bushings without the washers, the plastic on top pretty much acts as one. When I was running them I was leaving out the top washer and it feels better imo

After 20+ years of skating, I finally bought bones swiss.  I have no idea what took me so long.  Hopping on these bad boys after a lackluster bronson g3 experience (only bearings Kingswell had at the time) has me very happy

Bones swiss with main set up. reds with cruisers

That’s it!

Had my Swiss for almost 18 years now. Cleaned a half-dozen times. Blow-out / Speed Cream them when changing wheels.

Definitely curious if anyone else has used this, or any brand of PTFE lubricant.

Most of the time, anything with shields works well with various brands of bearing lube, eg Bones speed cream or any version of light machine oil.  Running bearings without shields usually means they will not perform or last as long, but wet lube will just make them attract all kinds of mess, so something dry like graphite powder has been the go to for a lot of skaters.  Seems like it would work well for open bearings without shields.

I do recall someone using silicone based lubrication which made the bearings feel a bit sluggish, but I don't know if they were clean or running smoothly beforehand.

If they are clean and dry to start with, either should work, as well as PTFE lubricants, so if the bearings are not super expensive, you could try it and let everyone else know how you go with it.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

i was thinking about this. i was also thinking about using locknut for hardware and stuff, so it keeps tight. but not sure if it would be a hassle to get off afterwards with a simple skate tool.

I’m pretty bummed. My set of Swiss 6 arrived and one of the bearings is a dud. It’ll immediately stop after 2 rotations and you can feel something getting caught when it stops. Maybe one of the balls is deformed or the races. Had to replace the 1 bearing with 1 of my old normal Swiss. All is good, now off to the park I go.

Did you pop the shield and have a look in there?

You could even remove the race and see if something got in there.

Also not to assume there was something majorly wrong, but were they from a reputable source?  A lot of fakes getting around.

Bones and Skate One in general take that sort of stuff pretty seriously, so if you send them an email with purchase info, they usually help with anything you need (might even send you a new set).
