I've been buying a lot of shoes on sale recently and am wondering how much is too much. So far I have 4 pairs I haven't worn yet. I go through a pair every few months. Would suck to skate my last pair of shoes and have it fall apart super easily because I waited too long. I live in the Northeast US but summers can be brutal here. Anyone have experience with this?

EDIT: should I just keep new shoes in the fridge to protect them from the heat? I have plenty of room...

Yes. All footwear will, it will depend on how long they are in storage (years?) climate controlled? Hot? Humid?

The rubbers start to oxidize much faster than I would have thought. Even sitting in my closet, some gum rubber soles will develop a little shine in less than a year, though it wears right off. All the foams and glues tend to yellow and get brittle, but nothing that will make a shoe unskateable til you're a decade down the line. Sun will destroy plastics though, so keep them in the box.

Any downsides to keeping new shoes in the fridge? (not freezer) I feel like it would help at least during hot weather months.

Not in my experience, no. I am a sale shoe vulture for sure and generally have 4-8 pairs in the quiver depending on the time of year.

I just keep them stacked in boxes in my closet and even if I lace up the oldest pair I have on hand (2 years is the max for me I think) there's no noticeable difference in grip, that "fresh" feeling, etc.

Chances are most of the shoes people buy are already more than a year old based on the time from which they're made in a factory, shipped to the US, distributed, and sit in a store for god knows how long. A few more months in a closet shouldn't affect them much.

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine, unless you keep your shoes stored in some gnarly temperatures.

I've held onto shoes for years, tastes change or you just wanna save pairs. they held up fine enough, just make sure you keep moth balls or silverfish repellent in the place you store them or those shits will get eaten up

I’ve had mixed experiences buying older model Vans shoes brand new in box, off eBay. Models/colorways as far back as 2012. Some held up as if I bought them from the store in present day. Others oxidized quickly and the glue began to fail. I don’t know if it had anything to do with storage, but I’d say just store them in a consistent climate that doesn’t go from humid to dry, cold to hot, hot to cold, etc. Same principle as boards, guitars, etc.

Rub jizz on old shoes to give them back their virgin spring and bounce.

Strangely enough, I have two pairs of Reynolds 1's and they look and feel basically brand new.

This is how a real man stakes his claim.
