Title: Guided By Voices
Post by: Ben Throttle on September 08, 2009, 01:04:38 PM
There's only been one GBV thread on here and i figured we needed a new one with links. Some of the most infectious, lo-fi melodies you'll ever hear (they're pretty short but it only takes one listen before you're clicking "Repeat" over and over again)

Guided by Voices "Bee Thousand"

Guided By Voices "Alien Lanes"

anything they did from the 80s till about 95 or so is unfuckwithable. after that pollard did some fine tuning for the worst, lost that lo-fi sound but oh well. Bee Thousand is definitely their masterpiece.

So true. AL has some amazing ones though... "As We Go Up, We Go Down" and "Game Of Pricks" are two of my favorites

yeah, alien lanes kills it as well. "Motor Away" would have to be my favorite on that album, with "Game of Pricks" a close second.

Pavement < GBV
Fun piece of trivia, Robert Pollard wrote the entire Pacers Album for The Amps along with how many GBV full albums and EPs and Breeders songs. A really underappreciated pop lyricist. Teenage FBI will always be one of my favourite songs ever.

It's a really hard choice with GBV or Pavement. "Wowee Zowee" is like a 90's indie rock version of The White Album. Both are fucking original and classic in there own right

Man do I love Guided By Voices. I dunno though, a lot of their stuff can be hit or miss with me sometimes, but when they hit they hit hard. I've been listening to "King Shit and the Golden Boys" a lot lately, it's a collection of a lot of their rare unused tracks and b-sides; Definitely check that album out if you haven't heard it yet, a good chunk of the songs on it were recorded in the same sessions in which Bee Thousand songs were done but never made it on.

Also, Bee Thousand < Alien Lanes.
That's right, I said it.

ha no way i'd agree w/ that, pavement were the most consistently original band of the 90's...but GBV had an amazing knack for pure pop melodies for sure. and if you're into the lo-fi aesthetic they were certainly the most true to it (compared to pavement, sebadoh, so on...)

I have been a HUGE fan for about 15 years.  I've seen Bob perform live about 50 times.

If anyone needs to know where next to go in his often overwhelming discography, I can be of assistance.  Bob's done a lot of collaborative work with other artists that generally fly under-the-radar.  One of note was Go Back Snowball, which was a collab. with Mac McCaughan(of Superchunk/Merge Records).

For an in-depth look at the GbV catalogue, see here:

http://www.gbvdb.com/

If I could recommend recent projects I would say go with Circus Devils-Sgt. Disco, Robert Pollard-From A Compound Eye, Robert Pollard-Elephant Jokes or the new Boston Spaceships-Zero to 99.  All four of those albums are seriously fucking awesome!

Nice.  A friend of mine, who is also a hardcore fan, lists VoT as his least fav. GbV release.  I can't understand why...Wished I Was A Giant, Jar of Cardinals, Gleemer, Wondering Boy Poet...so many good ones.

Here's a GbV message board.  It is very insular.

There's a new boxset coming out in a few weeks.

http://www.amazon.com/Suitcase-Up-We-Go-Now/dp/B002NCUF5I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1255446529&sr=8-1

http://www.thefactoryofrawessentials.com/index.html

Up We Go Now is the third in the Suitcase series of unreleased Robert Pollard / Guided By Voices tracks excavated from a suitcase of cassettes in his closet. Like the previous two volumes, Suitcase 3 includes 100 songs on four compact discs in a box. Disc 4 is an acoustic jam session by Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos in 1994-1995 (the period between GBV classics Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes).

A new Guided by Voices album came out on Itunes today...physical release is not until mid.-January.  It is the first album with the "classic" line-up since Alien Lanes(1995).  It is streamed here:

I ask because they recycled a couple songs from Suitcase...Heavy Crown, Pluto The Skate, Meddle and a couple of others.  Word has it that they were gonna recycle my personal fav. GbV song, Stingy Queens.  I have a feeling that it might be on Class Clown...

Favorite band after Pavement. I like the Pavement vs. GBV talk that was going on in this thread three years ago. They're both incredible.

For anyone trying to get into them initially, download Human Amusement at Hourly Rates. It's a best of album, which is really helpful for a really prolific band like GBV.

I really wish I had gotten to see them live.

Also, if you like GBV you'd probably also like Kleenex Girl Wonder. Similar song styles, also recorded on 4 track recorders.

Human Amusement is good...GbV only...if you want to delve into Bob world I would recommend Crickets(a best-of album of all his projects).

They're probably gonna do some shows to support the new albums...I wouldn't expect an extensive tour...

Never heard of Kleenex Wonder Girl...I think this guy sounds a lot like early GbV:

Not confirmed.

Bob's ex-bro-in-law(and good friend) is on that message board I told you about.  When he was asked to comment on the show rumor he said:

Quote
not that I know of...
I talked to him yesterday to clear the *Heedfest dates with him to make sure there weren't any touring or shows planned for that time.
He said there were no plans for any shows.

Now, they doesn't mean that his management isn't working on a deal

*Heedfest is a fan festival that's held in Dayton every year.  It is awesome!!!

Thought this thread was bump worthy.

Bob's got a lot of shit going coming out(goes without saying usually).  Two new Circus Devils albums(CD is Bob's evil kinda experimental shit)...a la:

Circus Devils - Pattern Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OFAMwiywBM#)

circus devils - Get Me Extra! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZFOfNtbEik#)

He's also go a new solo album coming out in a couple months called Blazing Gentlemen.  That will be the second one for the year.  The one already out(Honey Locust Honky Tonk) is awesome!  Here's a couple tracks:

Robert Pollard | I Killed A Man Who Looks Like You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITcv7t5wmrk#)

Robert Pollard - Drawing A Picture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvrg4pJju7k#)

And there's a new GbV album coming out in January called Motivational Jumpsuit.

[close]

Bob was romantically involved with Kim Deal.

I met Bob in 1995 and I was wearing this thrift store soccer shirt that said "Pollard Brothers Construction" on it.
He was freaking out about it and traded me a Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia T-Shirt for it.
I mentioned Kim Deal to him because I knew that he had worked with her on Pacer, and I guess this was shortly after their relationship fell apart. ( not sure if it was romantically ) But he sort of freaked out and said,  "Kim knows that there are no women allowed in the clubhouse" or something.  (Shockingly he was drunk)

At any rate seeing them play on the Alien Lanes tour in a small club in Canada was probably the best show I have ever witnessed.

Agreed!  They had their first practice for the upcoming tour the other day.  I heard that the setlist has changed drastically.  They'll probably do 2/3 of Space Gun.  I'm guessing that they are adding some from Waved Out...as it is being re-issued soon.

I was planning on going to the Ithaca and Cleveland shows...but between a 6k vet bill and moving in to a new house(we take possession the day before Ithaca show)...I am out for now.  I am considering going to Bloomington...not sure yet.  I'm sure more dates are coming...but not sure how close they'll get to me.  I did hear that a Toronto(much closer for me) show may be in the works.  I think that's unlikely...but here's hoping!

Tour kick-off is tonight.  Unfortunately, I won't be there.  But I will be at the Ottawa, Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit shows and the unannounced show in Dayton.

figured this would probably be okay to post in this thread; Thomas Bloomer's part from the Wash D.C. video Time Will Tell (by Allen Danze). think this dropped around ~2006 and he skates to 2 Guided by Voice tracks. always thought this part was sick.

i remember he disappeared for a few years after this video dropped, but then started coming back downtown to skate again sorta out of nowhere and filmed another part for Allen's next video before it came out. sadly, he passed back in 2016. RIP

Saw them in Jersey this past weekend, brilliant show. They'd power through twenty songs, hit an emotional high point with something like "Motor Away" or "Jane of the Waking Universe," and just when you thought they'd finished, they'd blast through twenty more. I think the encore itself was half an hour.

Pretty sure I recall Thomas being an active Slap poster many years ago. His skating was very popular on here when that video came out.

Always loved this Brian Clarke part skating to GBV. They compliment each other very well in my opinion.

Vertical filming aside...a good chunk of the performance:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3lzJhu2JbY&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3lzJhu2JbY&feature=youtu.be)  Can't imbed as it is unlisted.

I could see him posting here, I know Allen used to semi-regularly.

Dont think I've ever seen this part before. Definitely a good pairing of skating and music

Dude!  That is going to be such a special show!  They're doing 100 songs!  It's going to be a 5h+ show.

I'm going to try to make this show work...but it is doubtful...Ottawa/Toronto in three and a half weeks!

A new album dropped the other day...Sweating the Plague.  It is very solid!

Just listened to the “Heavy Like the World” single and liked it quite a bit. I may order a CD soon. Thanks for the heads up. I’ve been sleeping on their output and really need to do a deep dive. Open to any recommendations. Should probably go through this thread. Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand are what turned me onto them because of the lo-fi elements, but I’m not at all deterred from what I’m hearing in this new single.

While Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes are classic records, the stuff Bob has been doing these past few years has been really, really good.  One of the few bands that have been around for a long time that you actually want to hear them play the new stuff live.

I think the current line-up is the best one they've ever had. The string of albums under this line-up have all been fantastic and live they're better than any other line-up I've seen. Seems like Pollard has found a new creative fire with these guys that doesn't seem to be going out any time soon.

Agreed!  Long-time fan here...this current line-up is my favourite!  I give much of the credit of how well they're sounding to Travis Harrison.  Travis has helped produce many of the recent albums...and does an incredible job with sound at live shows.

They've already got the follow-up to Sweating the Plague in the can(of course they do)...it's called Surrender Your Poppy Field.  I heard it described astrippy raw prog pop Sabbath.

I lost count a long time ago...but think I'm above 70 shows.  Next up is Detroit in three weeks.

I would love to make LA happen, but am going to Cuba over Christmas.  I don't think my wife will be cool with me taking off a couple of days after we return...

Dude!  Even many Dayton/Northridge locals don't know who he is...I've been to Dayton many times...when locals ask what brings me to Dayton and I mention Bob, they're often clueless.  Jimmy Pollard is another story...there's an annual fan festival in Dayton called Heedfest(if you're a fan, I can't recommend attending enough!)...at a Heedfest a few years ago Jimmy was there...one of the caterers asked me what was going on...I mentioned GbV/Bob...he had no idea.  But quickly offered..."but that's Jimmy Pollard over there...I played ball against him...he was unbelievable!".

What about that SLO show the night before? Apparently, the venue is good...I know a lot of people who are going...partly so they have an excuse to stay at the Madonna Inn.

Surrender Your Poppy Field is really, really good! The sound is quite different...in a good way.

Man.... Tuesday has been my favorite day of the week lately. Todays news with the live stream, mirrored preorder, and hot freaks email was punctuated by an email from Midheaven that my copy of Vampire on Titus is about to ship.

Me too. Something to look forward to.

I love Mirrored Aztec! I think the songs are going to translate really well live. I can't wait to hear Transfusion done live.

No. I have not. It was a closed set with only a handful of Dayton locals/friends in attendance. And no one is talking about the setlist.

I heard that quality is incredible! It was shot with seven cameras.

*oh yeah, it comes with an audio download of the show.

Ha!

I loved it! The band sounded great! The harmonies throughout were fantastic! Doug's solo on Moses On A Snail was incredible.

I was fortunate to get to hear a forthcoming GbV album the other night. It's called Earth Man Blues. It is different from every other album they've released. Very psychedelic and proggy.

How different?  I'm starting to think Bob is hitting the prog a little too hard.

Many of my old GBV friends are all nostalgic about the "original" line-up. Fuck that! The current line-up is the best!

Heedfest is still tentatively happening Labour Day weekend in Dayton. Fingers-crossed!

I had tickets for Heedfest last year. Ended up eating the cost of my flight and hotel and had to dispute the charges of the ticket with my card company because the ticketing agency took the money and ran. I know it's not the band's fault, but I'm just not willing to buy advanced tickets to anything anymore, especially when airfare and lodging is involved. Gonna have to wait for them to come to me  :(

I heard the Cub Scout Bowling Pin full length album a couple of weeks ago(I think it's coming out in June). It is fantastic! There's a Cash Rivers vibe at the start, then gets pretty psychedelic. There's a song near the end that sounds straight off of Tommy.

Another album dropped the other day...Earth Man Blues. It is my favourite from the current line-up...and it has been getting great reviews...which has translated in to a big sell-through. If you plan on buying this album on vinyl act fast! Apparently, Revolver(music distributor) only has 100 copies left. Rockathon said that they wouldn't be able to restock until March 2022 b/c the industry is that backed up.

Loving EMB. How Can a Plumb be Perfected is amazing.  I think I would have been floored hearing it all for the first time rather than hearing Free Agents, Batman, and Trust Them beforehand.  Looking forward to Cub Scouts full length but gonna pass on the merch. A little too rockabilly looking to me.

This show is looking like it might happen for me. I found crazy cheap airfare.

I know it's sold out, but there's lots of tickets on Stubhub and I know quite a few people that bought tickets but were unsure if they would be going.

I'm pretty bummed about missing it. I'm on the longest drought...haven't been to a live GbV show since Sept.2019. That is nuts for me. I'm not sure when it will end either...possibly Phila/DC in June. But I have a feeling a show in the D will be announced. Detroit is a much closer drive for me.
