Seems like there's a lot of skateshop heads who post here... Come on now, be honest; what's the corny shit you stock to pay the bills?
-
my boards
-
diamond shirts
-
My local shop has a loads of bam stuff, hopefully that's to get money more than that they like it...
-
I ran a shop a few years back and we stocked "Rimz." Axle nuts that were also bearing sheilds that looked like car rims. Kids ate that shit up, especially the gold ones. Even the legit shop team kids flossed them.
-
Bam decks, Element shoes (believe it or not they went fast), and other Bam related items.
-
nothing.
the guy sells what he wants. a lot of lowkey and local brands, and it serves as an artspace.

Sounds like a legit shop but the cheerleader font is kinda corny in itself. And Indi trucks turn well but come on, clothing? Indi shorts and shirts definately qualify
And I quote:

New shirts and shorts in from Independent clothing. The new issue of Thrasher, Transworld, Juice Magazine, and The Skateboard Mag (comes with free Strange Notes DVD) are also in.
-
red dragon apparel
Good one... But Red Dragon actually sells enough to make ends? Man, where's your shop located?
-
I own a shop, and the corniest ive ever gotten is Rob and Big decks here and there...and the Meaty Deck(which is actually one of the illest shapes ever if you put it under your feet...ill wheelbase...
-
I just saw the Castrucci Thread and realized where this came from....id put my money in DNA's pocket before Bams, or Blackboxes(never bought a product from either)
-

DNA always throws a mean open house every winter... Don't like everything about their companies but it does feel good to support them. Bam who?
But keeping it real I don't understand the moral stance against Blackbox. Don't care for the image but morally how is it different than a distro like Girl? The Girl branding/riders appeal more to me but they press their wood in China and market to Zumies but no one seems to care. Their riders are solid but it comes off as a frat at times.
-
I saw those rob and big/meatie boards at the shelter last night lance. I don't really know where you're coming from about the shape, I've ridden a meaty deck and it seems average AWS to me. picked up the b-block video though...keep it up! I'll deffinately be back to albany, hopefully as soon as possible

All the hypebeast clothing. You know the people who don't skate, but go crazy over clothing.
-
longboards...shit sells like hot cakes though...and a multitude of shitty surf brand clothing
-
usually there is nothing bad at my local/friends shop but around christmas time elements, longboards, birdhouses, hook ups, and some other stuff comes in. the only thing they have now that i am not into are the plan b boards. they sell but they also look so cheesy, but at least we refused to get sheckler boards
-

Damn, that's rough. I forgot, we used to stock those distro completes around Christmas time too. Definately corny but beats setting up a complete for some grandma who doesn't know shit from Cheyanne. But longboards...
-
You know what, I'm trying to sell stuff that I'm into and also stuff that the chain round the corner don't sell, and its fucking hard times man.
Loving all the Independent shops that are still doin it!!
-
Grip gum, Fallen shoes, and colored grip tape.

Longboards and skimboards.
Can't say we're proud of it but I figured there are worse ware's to peddle.

i'd say theres nothing wrong with longboards, theyre just like big skateboards built for cruising. the skimboards area bit iffy though

Grip gum, Fallen shoes, and colored grip tape.
Grip gum's a good one. We had this kid with some sort of disability who always wanted me to order it for him. I could never bring myself to order it. Always told him it was out of stock. Colored grip's another one.... Worst shit ever.

frisbee golf supplies
Wow... That's a tough one to beat.
We had a little park in the back wherehouse area and sold generic Little Debbie snack cakes to the kids. I started out with the real deal, 8 pack for 99 cents. Sold them for 50 cents a peice, which is a 400% mark up. Then found the generics for like 75 cents an 8 pack and just refilled the Little Debbie box with those shits. The kids bought them up like crack.
-
The shop I skate for is like a surf/swim store that has a skate counter in one corner, so needless to say theres plenty of Gravis's, flipflops, quicksilver cowboy hats etc.
-

Can't knock the hustle... But correction, not Little Debbies, generic Little Debbies. Man I wish I remember what they were called. Probably "Little Cathy's" or something genious like that. Restocking the one Little Debbie box we had was key--fickle bitches would have boycotted them if they knew they weren't name brand.

a couple of shops in our country are stocked with sufboards and windsurfs and some bmx to top it all of.... and of course EVERY shop is about half of snowboarding...
-
snowboards
-
tail devils.
-
I guess stuff that I consider corny, like altamont clothing and plan b boards, is pretty minor compared to most of this stuff.
-
Just remember you can always play the LB's game...when one rolls by just punch the closest skater next to you...
Its like slugbug but for longboards...
-
Shop I worked at years ago sold bikinis at one point. I really had no problem with it. The boss kept the mirror outside of the change room.
-
skate wax.
wax is wax last i checked but kids will pay more if its directly related to skating.

if a kid asks for color grip, be honest and tell him it sucks.
-
I have a shop here in Italy where I get decks for around 60€. For European standards the price is ok.
The only problem is you can't grip the deck in the shop, because you could cut yourself with one of their blades .
And they sell a lot of corny stuff.
If you're bored look up www.treessesport.it

zero and mystery. add baker to that pile also.
-
crooks n' castles, ten deep, lrg. kinda corny but the kids love it.
and i feel like there making better stuff than a lot of skate brands. in fact the skate brands have been biting the streetwear stuff for a while now.

well, that i would say is a problem with frat boys. longboards themselves are pretty sweet. there will always be kooks riding boards with wheels on the bottom, lets not condemn the board itself but more the people riding them

obey and stussy. i dont really have a problem with stussy but these shirts are pretty street wear. oh well i love the shop i go to.
-
obey has a ton of sick clothes...kinda pricey, but pretty solid stuff

NOTHING WRONG WITH LONGBOARDS.
Sometimes it's fun to cruise around on a monster... after riding one for an hour or so, stepping back on a regular popsicle makes you feel like a giant. Fun is fun, IMHO.
-
call me a purist but longboards are whack. snowboarding and rollerblading might be fun too but...
-
my shop doubles as an abortion clinic.

been there. they also sold body jewelery and were a tattoo/"lifestyle" shop. flamed shirts, lowrider bikes, the works...
it sucked, and marijuana and hill bombing were the only thing that kept me sane.

Here's the deal, we love to be elitist when it comes to skateboarding, and we want kids to buy the "right" stuff. Problem is, Zumiez is coming and if core skateshops are going to survive they have to change with their customer base. I live on the East Coast and the shop I ride for just opened up a third location in the mall. I cringed, but the truth is that when Zumiez opens it's 300 stores in the NorthEast this year we'll still be around. We get the mall money, and it goes to keep our indoor park (JunctionSkate.com) open. The shop has the worst shit ever - including the Rob & Big boards that started this thread - but we're also a heavy supporter of local and core brands. Sometimes I think the shops that are closeminded about their product lines are just as bad as the mall stores. What's up with local brands? If small, skater owned shops are the backbone of skating, can't the same be said about small, skater owned brands? You skate-snobs should check yourselves. Gino is the man for sure, but how many Girl flow guys live on the east coast? I'm not hating, I'm just asking who supports your scene, and do you support them? Truth?

as bad as it sounds, if i were to open a skateshop, i'd probably try to get into a Mall before getting some little place in the cut with little to no foot traffic. i know that sounds f-ed up but i'm not pouring my blood sweat and tears into some place in the middle of nowhere hoping that skaters help keep my shit open. skaters are cheap SOBs by nature and i don't see them paying more for a certain item just to keep it real. skating is expensive to begin with and a lot of people have the mentality that cheaper is better. why buy a pair of shoes from a core store for $50 if you can get them at zumiez for $20? its f-ed up but its the truth.

Our local shop which is in the same area (Lair, Enfield Ct, right above Hartford) don't sell any bullshit and would never be in a mall.
Do whatever you like. But my support goes to the true shops. The ones that are not in malls.
My other favorite shop KCDC in Williamsburb Brooklyn also has a killer scene and shop. None of which you would find dead in a strip mall.
And you can't say it doesn't work cuz boith them shops sell shit tons.
Fuck Zumiez, Pac Sun and all that mall shit.

the difference is your age, how old are you? i assume you're atleast in your 20's? which means you have some soul and you'll back your shop. little kids aren't like that, they have no sense of loyality whatsoever. all they know is they want this or that, they want it now, and they want it as cheap as possible.
also, if their mom takes them to the mall for whatever reason and mom says "hey billy, go pick out a board", he damn sure ain't going to say, "nah mom, i want to go to Lair to pick up my board", thats just how kids are.
and KCDC is more than just your typical skateshop, they're more like a bountique "skart shop". they always have money coming in from other outlets cause they know they can't stay afloat by selling just skateboards. i'm not sure what the rent is but could you imagine how many boards they'd have to sell in a month just to make the rent?

I'll agree with one thing - Fuck Zumiez and Pac Sun. Here's the thing. Zumiez is opening up 300 stores in the northeast this year. Theory made a preemptive strike by getting in the mall, but here's the thing - a core shop can exist in the mall. What makes core? Skater owned? Done. Supports a team? Done. Helps out the scene by hosting demos and constest, building parks and putting out videos? Done. "True" shops aren't necessarily the ones that yell it loudest, they're the ones that put their money where their mouth is. Let's face it, you're not going to go skate Zumiez Skatepark - because skateparks don't make money. Like I said, you've gotta support the people who support you. The "mall" hate only works when applied to horrible chain stores. Theory has been in business for 9 years and has done a lot for the scene - that's what makes a "True" skateshop.
Things might be working now (of course KCDC isn't entirely funded by skateboarding) but what about when there's 300 more competitors? The Zumiez in the Waterford Mall has already open and don't think West Farms isn't on the list. If we want skateboarding in the right peoples hands we can't hide behind some weird view about location. The mall sucks. I don't go there either, but kids do - and their parents spend money there regardless. Those of us who know might have loyalty, but some forty something Mom could give a shit - and that's who's paying the rent.

Ruin doesn't sell anything corny or stupid.

Come on, all you guys swinging from the nuts of Girl but busting Jaimie's balls respond...
And all sales reps suck but the Girl sales rep I dealt with was the worst... "You guys still stocked up on Yeah Right decks? That shit's hot," like two years after the vid dropped. "That's it?" "Come on, let me throw some of those Bee Bull decks in there." And I've mentioned it before, but they shipped their production overseas which obviously ups their proffit margin, yet their wholesale prices have stayed the same or gone up. Even with how shitty Dwindle Distro is, at least they pass the savings on to shops which helps them make ends.
To me the fact that you guys lambast Jamie for the SAME shit other companies do makes me think it's more about image and branding... Blackbox appeals to little kids and you're not down with the corny hesh image so Jaimie's an easy target. Girl has rad art direction and puts out solid vids so you look the other way... Hypocracy.
Oh, and back to the thread--incense takes the cake for me. Nice one. Anyone ever sell patuli oil?
