I think I'm totally converted again to sizes below 8, since few sessions, my 7.875 just seems "normal" to me, neither too wide nor too thin ! I got back on an 8, it seems difficult and big to skate now haha

Maybe one day I'll try 7.75 again, but I don't have the courage to buy new trucks in 129 haha

Happy to hear its working for you :)

I've recently gone the other way from 7.6" up to 7.875" and have adjusted well to it.

I think 7.875" is a great size all round and I like that you can go with either 129/139 sized truck options.

Yes! I would probably try with second-hand 129s recently, but I don't know what to choose between high or low for 5.0 venture.. I have always skated high in 139s, so..

Personally I would go for the 5.0 highs (but I'm biased towards them as they are my favourite trucks) and I usually go for 53mm wheels - I have gone up to 56mm wheels without any issue too.

The lows seem to have a big following on here and certainly turn a little differently to the highs.

If I'm not mistaken you're on 51mm wheels right? Looks like you could do either happily.

P.S. I often see older sets of Venture lows for sale on eBay for cheap, maybe like you mentioned before try some trucks second hand first before buying new? Just add some new bushings and pivot cups and you're good to go.

I have always skated ventures, I’ve tried other trucks but it’s been venture since I was a kid :)

I’ll definitely update after a few sessions, I know it’s going to feel weird but Aleka Lang skates a setup similar to this and looks rad!

I’d usually skate an 8 with 5.2 low v-lights
[close]

Cheers for the reply, have you ever ridden the standard cast baseplate 5.0 highs? I rave about them all the time but I don't see many skaters going for that exact size. I'm always interested to hear what other skaters think of them if they have though.
I checked out at Aleka Lang, not heard of him before, he has a good skating style indeed!
[close]

I think I probably will have done back in the day but can’t remember!

I have some 5.0 lows with a normal cast baseplate, think they’re going to be nice, tempted to get a 7.5 to set them up so I have a skinny high and skinny low haha

What setup are you on at the moment? Have you already posted pictures?
[close]

Good stuff, I'd say do and go for the 7.5" to have the high/low set-ups going at once:)

I spent most of last year on a Jart 7.6” (31.6” long with 14.2” wheelbase) and Venture highs 5.0. I loved that set-up but have found it hard to get replacement decks in exactly that size in the UK and it seems to have been discontinued now. Tried a 7.5" not long after that but wasn't feeling it paired with the same truck and wheel combo I had at the time.

I’m currently on my spare set-up which is a Sour 7.875” (31.82” long with 14.2” wheelbase) paired with some older Street Corner Venture 5.0 highs. I threw it together to get through winter and have it double as a rain board, but honestly it feels a bit too nice to use in crap weather!
I was a bit reluctant to size up from the 7.6” initially but the change hasn’t been bad and I quite like it now.

Re-posted from the set-up thread:

My winter/rain board setup:
Lightly used Sour 7.875” deck (S4 concave, 31.82” long with a 14.2” wheelbase)
Street Corner Venture 5.0 High trucks with red medium hard Doh Doh bushings
Mini-Logo 95a 56mm wheels
Green Fracture Abec 7 bearings
Independent 1 inch Allen hardware
MOB grip

Nice setup! Love the black wheels with that dark red, very classy

Definitely would be nice to see some more highs in here although I do love the look of lows, that’s the only madness I have right now which is pretty good going considering it’s just a matter of millimetres haha

Yes i skate 51 mm , so I think with the high it would be fine! Or else I take the 5.0 high V lights, to be in the medium height, but afraid that it will be too light haha I'm afraid of being disappointed with lows, I remember, I tried on someone's setup, my 360 flips had a lot of trouble with lows.. And I like the soft feeling when I land my tricks, I hate the feeling of rigidity that I had for example on thunders in 147.

Ok

thunder 147s are close to venture lo’s.
sounds like you might be better off with the 5.0 hi’s.
i had the 5.0 hi’s with the forged plate and quite liked them. paired very well with the kelly green anti hero eagle.

P.S. As a side note those black 56mm mini-logo 95a wheels aren't too bad for just rolling around the street on. A little too big for my liking but the size helps keep the momentum ok for less than perfect surfaces. I imagine they might feel a bit slow in the smaller sizes but can't confirm that.

Good shout with the truck height comparison.

Thats funny, I was just checking out the 7.81 green eagle online last night. They're quite pricey here in the UK but they look nice, I may have to treat myself to one this year.

Mini logos look sweet! I’m way too attached to spitfires though and I can’t seem to go above 52mm, if I do everything feels totally off, on highs or lows!

I saw that OJ do keyframes in 52mm, thought it would be cool to have a cruiser setup with venture lows!

I actually found this board to be pretty appealing, but the graphic and Kelly Bird don't really mean anything to me. Does anyone know of any other pointy, skinny, 90s shapes like this? The 101 throwback is the only other one that comes to mind.

Yes, you can skate whatever you want but let’s be for real.. boards evolved from toothpicks to where they are today because the level of skateboarding has evolved. Skaters are going big and skating big shit, hence a bigger popsicle shape.

Yeah, some skaters are in to that and that’s awesome but there are still a bunch of skaters who like the smaller boards, I’ve skated much wider boards and I love them so much but I always find myself gravitating back to smaller boards, it’s just fun trying new things.

Before they were toothpicks they were huge, anything can happen haha I don’t think anyone can predict what the next evolution will be in skateboarding

This is exactly how i feel - 7.875 just feels like home. I can skate 8 but it just doesn’t feel as good and kinda bulky. But when I go to 7.75, it’s just too small, crazy how .125 can make such a big difference!

Currently skating:

Polar 7.875
Indy Ti 129
Sml 40mm
Jessup
Shorty’s 7/8
Bones Swiss

This is exactly how i feel - 7.875 just feels like home. I can skate 8 but it just doesn’t feel as good and kinda bulky. But when I go to 7.75, it’s just too small, crazy how .125 can make such a big difference!

Currently skating:

Polar 7.875
Indy Ti 129
Sml 40mm
Jessup
Shorty’s 7/8
Bones Swiss

Going to need some pics! That sounds like a crazy set up!

Has anyone skated 5.2s (hi or lo) on a 7.75?

147 on 7.75 it works.
5.2 will be the same.

I actually prefer 5.0 on 7.75, I like when the trucks are smaller than the board.

I usually prefer that too by John shanahan has got me wanting to try wider ventures on a small board

I run 5.2 low on 7.75, its my preferred setup at that width.  Gives you the small board feel but more room to grind.
On 8 and up boards I prefer same width trucks or 1/8 smaller but on a 7.75 board I'll always run 8s

Cheers for the reply, have you ever ridden the standard cast baseplate 5.0 highs? I rave about them all the time but I don't see many skaters going for that exact size. I'm always interested to hear what other skaters think of them if they have though.
I checked out at Aleka Lang, not heard of him before, he has a good skating style indeed!

[close]

Thanks :) Don't worry, I understand your truck madness!
P.S. As a side note those black 56mm mini-logo 95a wheels aren't too bad for just rolling around the street on. A little too big for my liking but the size helps keep the momentum ok for less than perfect surfaces. I imagine they might feel a bit slow in the smaller sizes but can't confirm that.

Mini logos look sweet! I’m way too attached to spitfires though and I can’t seem to go above 52mm, if I do everything feels totally off, on highs or lows!

I saw that OJ do keyframes in 52mm, thought it would be cool to have a cruiser setup with venture lows!

I'm with you on the 52mm Keyframes, in general I'm not massively into wider wheels but I find those 52mm ones quite appealing visually at least! From what I've heard about them they're fairly grippy.

Indy Ti 129

I felt that way about trying to go down from 7.6" to 7.5", it just felt wrong and too narrow for my liking after getting used to a 7.6".
Eventually decided to go the other way and I'm loving 7.875" now though :)

Nice set-up, that graphic is a classic. The 7.2" nose sounds quite long, is it noticeable or is the whole deck feeling quite well balanced in terms of dimensions etc?

Which pros are still skating 7.5 - 7.75

The only ones I know of are  Louie Barletta, Aleka Lang and maybe Daewon?

I skated a 7.6 thank you with some thunders, i think 145's. I kept missing krooks and feebles. But flips felt soo good. Currently riding an 8" with 8" ventures. If I could find some slightly wider trucks with a decent turn I would rock some smaller shapes.
We rode 7.5's" and didn't complain.

I believe Dave Bachinsky is still active/pro and rides his special 7.5’s with the vertical laminates.

I imagine there might a few pros who ride custom 7.8” - 7.9” sizes but cannot 100% currently verify any. Manny Santiago may be on a 7.9” still? He has a 7.9” setup type video from about 3 years ago on YouTube.

Nice setup, was the 7.6” Thank You deck new or old stock? I’ve not seen many around and was curious about the specs/dimensions.

Good board. Actually 7.75. My trucks were 7.6. Mellow concave and a 14 WB.

i skated a 7.5 with 5.0 lo’s and some really shit 49s, last night.
i haven’t been skating much, and i already struggle, so the results were expected.
surprisingly, somewhat, i was reminded that 7.5 doesn’t necessarily mean easy flips. my 8.38 with 8.75 trucks is easier for switch flips.

it was fun to skate. 7.5 is really small. i like 5.0 lo’s, was the truck, i think 7.75 is a lot easier

Cthulhu!

I bought this one a while ago but I've been awfully busy unfortunately. Finally I've been able to skate it a few times.

Girl lists it as 7.5" x 31" wb: 14"
but it's a PS board so really all the numbers are a hair shorter. I'll call it a 7.4 and change.
older Venture 5.0 lows with a flat top washer
Darkroom 50mm :o these were the smallest wheels I had, they're ok
Jessup, Super Reds and random hardware

The first couple of sessions were jarring. I think I missed I don't know, 50 kickflips in a row which caused a mild panic. What if I am becoming OLD and lost the ability to kickflip? But eventually they came back! Prior to this I was skating the steepest Baker board I've ever seen. The comical flatness on this board felt like going down to the other extreme.

I'm alright with the lowness of the Ventures, the compact wb and length is fine too. It flips awfully quick of course. Great for 360 flips, a little funny for straight flip tricks. While the width, or lack of it, didn't take too long to get used to, A 7.75 still feels more reasonable I think.

HOWEVER

Every once in a while I'll skate a PS board, and then I remember why I don't skate them very often. It crossed my mind to leave the board at the park after the third session. That old feeling creeps in so quickly. And this is why I'm not liking it. I thought it was the concave/dimensions at first, but it's the soggy-ness. It shouldn't feel like a wet tissue so early on. This is not an enjoyable. I recently skated a Prime board that held it's stiffness better than this. I'm glad I bought one of these for old times' sake, but I'm also glad I only grabbed one of them.
