Saw this movie last night and can't really recommend it. I mean, he got the "skating culture" shit right for the most part but as far as making it an actual enjoyable, entertaining, or even challenging movie... he came up short. The characters were all pretty one dimensional and the story doesn't go anywhere (in a way that seems unintentional). I'm pretty sure he spent most of his time worrying about keeping the "skate culture" shit legit and forgot that he also had to make a good movie.
[close]
So, this movie is not doctor recommended?
[close]

The doc doesn't rec this one I'm afraid. Go see First Man in IMAX instead.

A Star Is Born is pretty god damn great too.  Was surprised how much it stayed with me.

Mid90s is just such a fucking meh title.  Just seems like its creeping a little hard in the buzzfeed/'member berries direction.   Why wasn't Jonah Hill ever in a Crail skit in their heyday of celeb cameos?
[close]

to be fair, the celeb cameo era of crailtap was from yeah right to fully flared, and jonah got famous after superbad which came out in the same year as fully flared. he was in away days fwiw.

You might be forgetting (can’t blame you) jack black and will arnett were in Pretty Sweet hassling the Trunk Boyz

Jonah talking that jive and what's up with him and that kid?  Pretty weird.  He comes off like a shoe guy poser who saw some skate videos on at the shop.  I knew a few of those types and none of them ever skated seriously.  Just consider his previous body type and it should be obvious this dude wasn't pushing anywhere.  STUNTING!!!

I'm sure most everyone is getting overwhelmed with Jonah Hill but this review sounds like what some of us haters have been saying all along:

https://uproxx.com/movies/mid90s-review-jonah-hill-childhood/

More reviews need to call him out...the review will reemphasize why not to see the auto-biography fantasy/mythology piece about what Jonah Hill wishes his teenage years were like...

I guess all the people who loved this movie like how a 12 year old looking boy hooks up with a 16 year old 3 feet taller than him, and he drinks, smokes, and does drugs without getting sick? So fucking fake!

I was going to go see it in theaters until this review revealed too much and made it sound like the kind of movie I hoped it wouldn’t be. Who’s got that putlocker link?

Caught Jonah on Seth Meyers last night and he came across as a dude that is a skate nerd and he spoke about it like a normal guy and was really genuinely stoked on skate culture and that specific time in his life and I thought to myself “Can he do a kickflip?” The answer is I really don’t give a shit.

Did he actually skate back then? Most likely he did and he wasn’t very good at it, as he has stated many times.
Every crew has one of these guys growing up, super into it and just not very athletic or coordinated and ends up being the filmer or just quitting.

I’m usually a jaded bitter old prick and very defensive and protective of skateboarding in general against outside kookery but I think I’m gonna let this guy slide on this whole thing.

Like if he was super into basketball and made a hoop movie would people be all “fuck this dude he’s a poser he can’t fucking dunk, he can’t do a proper crossover dribble...” etc. etc. etc.?

He’s obviously a huge skate and hip hop nerd and a little too into the movie Kids, which this appears to be a modern day take on.

Also I was really into his performance in Wolf of Wall Street, he killed in that.

I’m getting so fucking sick and tired of people talking about this, this hands down has to be the most boring thread that’s gone 15 pages. Everyone has that one guy in the crew growing up. Shit I had multiple crews growing up, some with world class skateboarders, but my actually legit friend crew I skated with, yeah we had one of those guys. Kid was on a board every single day, and never gave a fuck about being good because he just loved the actual act of skateboarding and rolling around. I actually admire that in a strange way, like you know u can’t do anything, yet you still go out every single day with the crew. Like have y’all looked at Jonah in Superbad? I mean not every big boy is Jamie foy.

i've always kinda liked jonah hill's acting but for some reason his skate fandom kinda bothers me. i keep trying to watch these new interviews with him that keep coming out but i cant fucking listen to him talk longer than 5 minutes. i guess him constantly praising everything skateboarding bores the shit out of me. also the whole "atcq were my beatles" thing makes me wanna vomit.

Why are those shoes 1100 dollars. Because they say Nerd on them? That reminds me of Andrew Dice Clay. “How come this sweatshirt costs 60 dollars? Because it says BUM on the front”.

That really hit the nail on the head of what’s been bugging me about it.  He’s trying to make a coming of age movie about what life would have been like if he was the person he wanted to be at that age.  There’s no humility or honesty or specificity to it like in a Lady Bird or a 8th Grade and so on.  I think this project would have been soo much more interesting if it was about the little fat/dorky kid who wanted a way out of their life and access into a culture they love but maybe don’t really have the talent for.

Jonah was just on NFL halftime and they fucked with him and said they had a board there to see how he skates, kinda funny. He has been everywhere promoting this and has used the same lines in every interview.

Just saw the movie, I enjoyed it. It's not perfect but it did a good job at capturing the 90s. Don't really see why anybody would have issues with how skateboarding was represented in it.

(Spoilers)
I know Jonah didn't want to make it "skate porn" or whatever but it really seemed like that video they showed at the end would have been a good opportunity to include some more actual skate clips. That whole video thing was underwhelming, it just felt a bit rushed and incomplete.

decent movie? skateboarding totally aside, the script sucked, the plot was paper thin, the editing was terrible, and i dont need to see a film in theaters cropped to 4:3.

Saw it.....definitely not Deer Hunter but I still enjoyed it for sure.

The one thing that stood out was how Nakel could hold his own acting.....I hated all the IC stuff but it's grown on me, a lot of its based on mikey Alford not being 40.

Honestly if spike made the movie people would be bitching that it felt like a girl video....

Just saw the movie with some coworkers. Jonah Hill got the hard part right of capturing the look and feel of the 90s without going full blown nostalgia porn.

I cant 100% vouch for the accuracy of the skate culture portrayal as I started skating in 99-00. By then skating blew the fuck up and moms were hauling mini vans full of kids to the indoor skatepark. The cast does remind me of the type of older dudes who were pissed that 6th grade me were snaking them.

But the movie suffers structurally,  first and third acts are rushed. While the acting is pretty good (especially from Nak) the character arcs are non-existent outside of the main character.

Yea its a 3/5 for me. Mid 90s is to skate movies what Mortal Kombat is to videogame movies - proves it can be done well...despite not doing it well itself...if that makes any sense.

I agree with Lenny.

Saw this flick this afternoon. I liked it, but didn't think it was "good." The acting was decent (especially the older brother and mom, both "real" actors) and Nakel really surprised me too. Most of the skating parts felt like they were also done "right."

But the entire thing felt really flat. Disjointed and rushed. A lot of good scenes, but overall it seemed like very little happened and the whole thing seemed pretty pointless.

Sort of the opposite of what I thought it was going to be like. Thought the movie bits would be better and the skating bits would be lackluster, but the opposite seemed true to me.

Wished the movie was focused on the older brother or Ruben more - very little happened with those characters but they were still far more interesting than Stevie.

As a skeptical as fuck person who skated then and skates now, my hats off to Jonah for taking on an impossible subject.

Haven't even seen the movie yet, but trying to please this skeptical, fickle, hater-leaning, pretty much anti-capitalist audience is a chore that those of us who work outside of skating can only appreciate from afar.

If you haven't seen the film, you shouldn't be commenting negatively in this thread, imo.

I might weigh back in once I see it, but nothing but respect after watching a few of the appearances, even if his knowledge is only 6 years deep.

If you are under 25 and skateboarding is still 75% of your life, I get your skepticism, but go watch the last 12-15 minutes of his appearance on The Breakfast Club and tell me he isn't a good dude, and someone you wouldn't want to have on your team.

Haven't seen it yet, but I've seen every other skateboarding move in existence. Would you rather end the movie with a downhill race and/or a joust?

From the title of the movie, I get that this was supposed to be a glimpse in time.

"my hats off to Jonah for taking on an impossible subject. "
Impossible? Seems pretty damn simple compared to most films attempting to portray an "art form".
Depicting the time frame as apposed to commenting on it originally.

"I Haven't even seen the movie yet"

"If you haven't seen the film, you shouldn't be commenting negatively in this thread, imo."

Don't comment negatively, but I will make claims about the film, at the exact same time I contradict myself and tell myself I'm an idiot.

"I might weigh back in once I see it"'
