5 hours!!!!! That's ridiculous.
This unfortunately might join Gershon Mosley and Jason Jessee in the unfinished pile just due to the length.

I am commuting 3 hours a day for work though shouldn't be too hard haha

I don't think I can handle this one. Mike V always sounds like he is full of shit.

Is it because every story is something like a wonder years narrative of "at that moment, I knew, my life was changed forever." ? I think he lost me when it was round 3 or 4 of Powell and he had a big statement of how "I always wanted to be a part of this team, etc etc etc" and then quit yet again. I'll watch his skating all day but it's hard to not think about how bad he wanted to become Rollins. And basically has.

Only made it 21 minutes and had to turn it off at his story about rolling off of a car when he didn't even know how to skate and his buddy yelling "YES! YOU'RE A SKATEBOARDER! YOU'RE A SKATEBOARDER" because it was the most radical thing he's ever seen someone do on a skateboard.

Seriously quit saying "If they made a movie about it" and just make your own shitty epic biopic about your life. You and Jamie both. It was basically him reciting a mental screenplay for a movie about his life.

5 hours is long but you can listen whenever you want. It’s not a live-only interview. Plus they’ll edit ingestible highlights for the people that can’t listen to the whole thing. 2.5 hours in and it’s a great interview.

In these old guy's defense, if you've been skating 30+ years, you're going to have a lot to talk about, or a lot of stories. I'll probably do an hour, hour and a half sessions. Thats what I did with Jamie. That said this must be a record right? 5 hours?

I finished it. It really says a lot about him that he can talk about himself for over 5 hours and only discuss how cool people apparently thought he was. His only discusses Ed Templeton in the context of how much he thought Ed looked up to him and even had the gall to victimize himself after Ed "left" their company together, not even hinting to the fact that Mike stole from him and then threatened to beat him up over it. He completely dismisses any discussion about how he used to beat people up all the time, even laughing at the notion of him being a tough guy when he has an interview of him bragging about diving backwards down a flight of stairs with two security guards in a headlock because they wouldn't let his wife into the Globe World Cup. He tries to claim that he inspired an anti-corporate attitude in skateboarding when he's among the earliest pros to have a fucking drink sponsor. He sings the praises of Greg Ginn, who on all accounts is a fucking cretin, just because it brings him one step closer to his wet dream of being Henry Rollins. It takes a special kind of person to say "people just wanna see me skate, man" and be serious about it.

As an older guy, I was def. Inspired by vallely back in the day, like waaaay back in the day.

Then I seen his part in some horrible Powell video and all I could do was feel bad. Similar to kris markovich when his part in that transworld video came out(4 wheel drive I think?)

He really is patting himself on the back way too much.

But whatever. At least he aged well. He must be 45 ish

Almost 50. I remember a demo way back in mid 90s - maybe etnies? with Penny, Koston, Chany - and while they all flaked out posing, Mike V fought to get his trick (ollie grab entire funbox) and landed it. MJ also ground out a nollie frontside flip off a lauch ramp. But Mike V saved it - demo king 👑

I listened to this whole thing at work today in hopes that he would talk about why he stole Ed's paycheck from TV and then kicked him off his own company. Was never brought up. Only talked about how awesome Ed was and never addressed that he stabbed him in the fucking back. Funny that throughout the interview he mentions not caring about money too.

Weird how people are hung up on some paycheck bullshit when Ed was like 20 and Mike 22. Ancient history from the guy who kicked Chris Senn of Toy Machine.

The Chris Senn thing, while lame can be chalked up as a mistake that many company owners have made. Mike V stealing Ed's check is not even comparable.

I started watching this in 0.5x speed to make it a 10 hour video, everyone sounded drunk and stoned, it was entertaining.

Then I sped it up to 2x speed and everyone sounded coked out, red bull fueled, and overly caffeinated. I don't remember anything anyone said. Punk rock?

The whole time I was looking for that video of Mike V launching into a vertical ramp and knocking it over and riding down it. I think it was in an old 411. I never found, but I learned Mike V once freed Muska from a bunch of security guards at a Vans event because Muska said fuck.

https://youtu.be/C9S30d_VRNw

I've got nothing else to contribute to this. I'm sure the 5 hours is an adventure. Good job everyone.

No shit it’s not comparable. Would you rather lose a paycheque or get sacked? Ed plays the victim all the time and it’s lame - “my whole team just quit”, yeah, nothing to do with you fucking them over ay? You’d have to have your head pretty far up Ed’s arse not to see he’s all about Ed and the money.

You'll either love this or hate this episode but the Ed/ TV beef has been squashed a long time ago and if Ed has forgiven him why are you all so hell bent on holding that grudge?
We as a skate community have forgiven way worse shit than that and while Mike V. has gone through tonnes of kook phases I'm almost certain he's not the same person as he was when that happened ...

Well said. And they need a part 2. Element stories, Black Label, Elephant etc. Yep, kook phases and ego for sure, but still intersting for skate history. Animal Chin, World Industries, Black Label, Element, Black Flag etc it is pretty fucken amazing. Ha - they didn’t even talk about that stupid blue “look at me” helmet.

It’s more about his lack of humility to address anything in his career that isn’t about how awesome he thinks he is.

Surprisingly easy 5 hour listen, he is a great story teller even though it was pretty self-congratulatory and he left out some of the not so great parts of his career. Would've like to hear him talk about Ed and Element era but I guess that would've been another couple hours added to the show.

Pretty crazy he has blown all his money when he must have made a lot from all the different things in his career

Just finished listening to it and I enjoyed it. The first 2 hours seemed to be about his first 2 years skating. His black flag story was pretty interesting. Totally forgot about that. I was shocked to find out that Powell gave him a 10 year contract. Even back in the days I would have never suspect that.

a comment complaint about Crob is that he doesn't do enough research / ask good questions - and while there might be an element of truth to that, I feel people underestimate the host.  Interviewing people aint easy, the people that are good at it are talented.  And of course preparation is important, but equally as important is creating the right atmosphere - allowing the guests to relax and tell their story.  My impression is that the 9 Club is getting better and better - they have done some tremendous interviews of late, barring the 1010 fiasco, but that was a rare mis-step.  I though the 5 hour Mike V was top notch.  Keep 'em coming.

Are there any Mike V parts that actually contain impressive skating? Like one that could be considered elite and groundbreaking for its time?
Public Domain though, every man and his dog was shaving their head and mimicking his posture, tricks and limp wrist style at the time!

***
I'm an hour in and I'm loving it (duh)! Seriously, compare this to the 10/10 episode and Mike V looks like a fucking Pulitzer Prize winner. No doubt he's done some kooky things and gone through a tonne of weird phases BUT (and despite his ego) I bet he loves skateboarding more than most.
People will circle jerk 10/10 for a few frontside ollies he did in the 80s and defend his right to have still not learnt any actual adult life lessons in over 30 years because of it and yet they are so quick to call out Mike V. I would argue that Mike V is easily more of a "legend" in skating than Jesse will ever be.
No, he wasn't Natas or Gonz but he did contribute a lot to the birth of street skating whether you like it or not. And yes, he burned through 1078 companies during his time but it doesn't look like Street Plant is really going anyway these days; they have a solid customer base and it's basically the definition of "core" no? Who else is straight up running DIY companies out of their garage?
I'll probably just broken record on through this thread but I think the important thing I got from this is that I really need to put my money where my mouth is, suck up the international shipping, and give him some of my hard earned next time I need some new boards.

I normally avoid this show because of the hosts, but just in terms of rad stories about legendary pros and behind the scenes detailing of seminal skate events in my 80s childhood, this episode is amazing.

If you've ever slapped a fisheye on your phone and thought "I'll film a fun two minutes with my friends real quick at XXX spot/place" and tried the result is disappointing almost all the time.  Mike V making a significant video part in a session, granted that several folks were doing that, is still insane.  The standards have changed and when that shit came out it is like a single person el toro session coming out now.  Dude may be a bit diluted but 80s skating seems to kinda do that to you.  Ever seen Gonz's youtube channel?  10 minute interview would kook skateboarding's prodigal son for life.

Within the first 30 seconds I learned I've been pronouncing his name wrong all these years
One of my childhood friends allways called him Mike valley and I noticed it had an extra L and I asked him, “wouldn’t it be Val-uh-lee” and from then on, that’s how we said it.

It was years before I heard everyone start calling him vuh-lay-lee.

"It wasn't about being accepted, I didn't care about the acceptance" (paraphrased)
Yeah right Mike, your whole damn career/life was one big battle for acceptance and fitting in, you ain't fooling anyone. That shit mattered to you, hell it probably still does. And as mentioned earlier dude sure loves patting himself on the back.

With that said Mike is one hell of a story teller, I'm not all the way done yet but I've enjoyed it so far. My high school upbringing also involved getting into punk and trying to fit in to that whole scene while discovering skateboarding at the same time as well, real similar to Mike's story, so I was sucked in right away.
Him along with Bryan Herman have been the best story tellers so far in my opinion; stories that keep you interested and wanting to hear more instead of pausing it to check something else every couple minutes.

But also, then Frankie Hill,  Jason Lee, Jeremy Klein were around and I shifted toward them. Then to Guy, Rudy and so on. I was a total Frankie style stealer

Stupid manstream jock kids doing what their parents wanted.  I watch one of my first 411s  and he's in there playing the sport I was trying to escape. enjoyed it. agree with the other poster who mentioned that it was nice that he was apologetic about bad choices he's made and about talking up his own accomplishments. the episode would be kind of lame if he didn't explain how exciting these things were to him. i liked that he took a story telling approach to it. at the end of the day the guy did do a lot of cool shit and helped launch the hobby\lifestyle that so many of us take pride it so i'm guessing lot's of people would take some pride and do a little bragging if they were in his position.

also saw him at a few demos and appreciated how he would break himself off every time as others mentioned. might buy a board and show them some support.

he had kind of a Donger thing going on back then. big kickflips and ollies. granted, we hated Donger at the time for being too basic and repetitive but it would've been interesting to see an alternative Mike V path where he didn't rely so heavily on goalie skating.
that's a fair comparison, sure he didn't have as much flow/ style as Donger did in the mid 90s but his focus was on doing simple tricks fast and with lots of pop. Some footage here (I fucking love this vid btw, so many heads in there):

funny that he only has a few tricks filmed and yet he won the pro division? He was hated for a long time in the 90s though so maybe that's why?

are two great examples of the type of skating he was doing, both are pretty powerful skating for 95/96-ish, lol he looks like Ben Kadow at the end of that Pacific Drive vid and a big YES to whoever said the skaters in the POLAR vid looked like they were trying to cosplay Rubbish Heap-era Vallely

it looks like Mike V has chronic wasting disease. maybe he plowed into a gypsy while pushing around LA and doing handstands.

Just finished and it was fucking amazing! He really summed it up over the last 15 or so min about where he's at in life and I can't hate on that PMA, he honestly brought a tear to my eye.

And while I did want to hear more about his return to veganism I'm not sure if the 9 club was the right platform for him to do so seeing as though he's already talked about it at length on social media so perhaps it was redundant, especially after talking for 5 hours straight? Funnily enough though, it was during that dark period he was talking about right before he decided to start street plant up with his daughter.

I won't babble on any longer, but I'm really stoked he's at peace with himself after all these years; he has a good sense of self awareness and is even able to make fun of himself these days which was probably hard to do back in the day when he was copping a lot of hate from the industry at large. Fuck yeah Mike, I think you might just be my fav skater ever!

"but why did you only push in the black label video?"
hahaha

Whether it matters to unknown_soldier or not. Didn't quote because he used a retardedly big picture.

This was a really good episode for the trip I did this past week. Mike has a lot of passion, and his storytelling made for a solid listen. It's crazy to think, how long the episode was, and it feels like there was so much more to talk about.

I grew up with Diesel Mike V (2000 and later), and didn't really know anything of his career before that. I was pretty ignorant to a lot skate history and didn't realize he was attached to a lot of it. That story with TG saying was pretty awesome, especially after listening to his 9club.

I'd assume he has his own company rather than doing something with Powell, because of the skate graphics. Was he was on Element at one point?

Again, good listen and definitely like this chapter of Mike V, Chill Mike.

Before we slide into a new episode I wanted to post the Suburban Diners part. Everything else got posted, good and bad, but I think this part is really cool and has aged well. It uses a Husker Du song so it's got that going for it which is nice.

If you're in Houston and want either of these boards or any street plant at all go to beantooth skateshop on the eastside of town they're the only ones that carry it in this vast beautiful city.

I think he claimed that they wouldn't do a 100% straight-up reissue, but they would do something to celebrate the 30 year anniversary including some new artwork. It was a long episode so I might be paraphrasing here...
