Which pro “designs” the best shoes
« on: July 10, 2021, 06:10:13 PM »
Who in your opinion designs the best shoes or had/has the best pro models even if they didn’t actually design them. For me it was between Rowley, Reynolds and Cab and I’m gonna have to go with Rowley. I wear half-cabs more than anything but when vans rereleases the Rowley pros with updated insoles every few years I always cop a few pairs. Those are probably my favorite shoes of all time. Vans should rerelease the xlts with upgraded materials and better insoles one of these days as well, I would love to skate those again. The Bastien colorway with the artwork on the insoles was dope.

Reynolds, Koston (besides the Nike sock liner ones) and I like the Gilbert Crockett shoes that have come out so far

I never skated any of Koston’s shoes on Lakai but I liked just about all of his shoes on es and Nike (I agree on the sock liner ones).

Smaller sample size but I’m a big fan of MJ’s two shoes on Emerica.

The original in red / Grey has an iconic look but skated like any other cupsole.

Koston had some great shoes on eS but I hated his Lakai model, folded my ankle but objectively not a bad shoe.

I doubt modern pros have a lot of input into Shoe design especially on the corporate brands. Rowley and Westgate come to mind in the modern era.

These were some of my favorites back in the day too and I finally got a pair yesterday after missing all their other re-issues.  Haven’t skated them yet, but they appear to be pretty well-made.  I’ve heard that previous re-issues were sort of poor quality.

I couldn’t find any of the standard black with the red stripe so I had to settle for the blue jawns.

I could be misinformed, but it seems like vans never advertises them and makes them in pretty low quantities.  I’d be kind of interested to learn what happened to cause all these weird half-ass re-releases.  It’s like the McDonald’s McRib but if they just silently put it on the menu without saying anything.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

Hahahaha For real! They never advertise dropping g these! I google Rowley pro or Vans Rowley like 3-4 times a year just to be sure I don’t miss out on the good colors (they still have both colors in stock on the Tillys website and I think SPOT still has a few sizes available too). The last pair I got a few years ago def left a little to be desired but I’m in it for the nostalgia at this point hahaha I agree these ones look to be made better and I dig those pop Cush insoles so hopefully they hold up a little better. They need to put out that red/white colorway!

His Emericas were always dope but I got a pair of his Supra shoes on the cheap not expecting much and they were really good shoes. Comfortable, durable and skated really well. Bummed I didn’t try Supra until it was too late.

Austyn's shoe on huf was fantastic and heavily underrated imo, but he doesn't have enough of a repertoire of shoes to fall back on to make him a contender.
But, to completely contradict what I just said, even though it's one shoe, we gotta talk about Stefan and him pushing execs at the swoosh til they gave him the exact shoe that he wanted that set the trend of skate shoes for the next decade and set the stage for shoes like Dylan's and Styns

Way too many people liked to just talk shit on Supra because a lot of their fashion stuff was way out there but their more subdued shoes (particularly Ellington’s models) skated great. I also really wanted to try the Hammer, Vaughn’s pro model that was out briefly, and Spencer’s pro model as well. I also was interested in the Skytop 3s and 5s actually.

Whoever did Silas’ first shoe!
Rowley’s later designs were better imho, the XLT and sham were way ahead of their time, not to take away form his first shoe or anything, that thing literally brought vans back from potato/ manga shoe purgatory

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

I forgot about Silas! I had a pair of those in brown and they were really nice. I dig the shams a lot too, vans could just about re-release any of Rowley's shoes and they would probably sell pretty decent haha

you sir, have great taste in shoes!
Shams and XLT reissues in 2021 would actually be a smart business move for them in 2021, maybe some rapid weld updates in high wear areas?

It's partially by happenstance cuz I was a huge Emerica guy, but I think I had more of Reynolds' shoes than any other pro from any company.
