Title: Put your money where your mouth is II
Post by: sfa on April 01, 2012, 10:43:17 AM
Yup, April again! So with spring springing and everyone getting fresh boards to hit the streets I'm asking everyone to go support small brands again this year!

We had an okay amount of people post the boards they got last year but I'd love too see more people post up what they bought this year.

Orchard Skate shop in Boston said they would hook it up this year with some deals so if you're having a hard time finding that special board hit them up!

Any other brands or shops that would like to offer discounts or deals just post em up!

Let's see some support for Brands like

Hopps
Magenta
Palace
Stacks
Coda
Iron Claw
Blueprint
Heroin
Landscape
Traffic
Blvd

Just post some pictures of your fresh boards and I'll pick someone at random and personally send them a deck and some other shit!

Got it March, but skating a Magenta right now.  The last Deluxe board I had was over a year ago, and I think i've only skated small brands since.  Kitsch, Studio, Music and Hopps.

Polar is basically impossible to get in the U.S. unless you're willing to pay $100 for a deck. I want to support Pontus and Polar, but can't for that much.

The typical Canadian gripe - I don't like spending $80+ on a nice deck that I'll worry about breaking.  I will, however, continue to support my local shop by getting the cheapest 8.25's they carry.  I realize they won't be making much off me, but I could be a dick and hit up the mall shop next to my house instead.

thats why i hardly ever buy "american" boards anymore. our euro-shit is usually a little cheaper, and since most brands are kinda small i know where my money goes.

cool, few things.

All the brands you guys are mentioning are all sweet! Of course those are the types of brands I'm talking about.

Theories, is a great place to pick some of this stuff up! Orchard, which I mentioned has hopps, palace, magenta, traffic, stacks, blueprint, and I'm sure a few more!

Let's also spend this moth convincing our local shops to pick some of these brands up!

Can anyone get in touch with Pontus about maybe getting some boards to the US? I bet places like MIA, orchard and Theories would be down to carry it.

Orchard has Palace? Sick.

Don't forget even more local companies/ones that don't really do much advertising or get much attention here. Like for instance, Chicago has Affiliate, Character, and Hated Skates to support (had a Hated before and really liked it). And like other people have said, let's throw Roger and The High 5 up there.

EDIT: Here's Hated's site. $50 board shipped and I'm sure some people will enjoy the beer drinking society shirt. http://www.hatedskateboards.com/store.html (http://www.hatedskateboards.com/store.html)

I would say a lot of people that have been skating for more than three years in the US haven't paid $50 for a board in a while. At least on the west coast we all tend to have friends that work for a shop or are in the industry. I just bought an Alien for $35 today and that's towards the high end of what I'm willing to spend on a board. Then again, if I had a career that afforded me some disposable income, I'm pretty sure I'd buy full price and get more exotic brands. Also, sticker price is usually $55 around these parts. Huge difference, I know. I promise that as soon as I'm not poor I'll buy more small brands and at full price.

For those of you looking for polar skateboards, I heard pontus was talking to Josh Stewart about carrying them.
Anyways we do mail order all the time, just email me if there is something you want, I can take photos, measure boards etc, and I always load up your box with stickers and whatever other stuff I have laying around.

a bunch of those brands are backed by big distro (baker boys/syndrome/Antics, Pure) or big money, they are not even close to be underground. New maybe but not home grown

Scumco & Sons, Voyage, Welcome, roger, magenta, polar are definately real underground co.

OKay!

So again, everyone is mentioning great brands! 5boro and Roger are perfect examples of what I'm talking about as are things like Affiliate and Hated! So, yeah, those all count twoards what I'm talking about!

As far as some of the brands being "too big" well, this isn't just about the size of the brand, it's about brands that are doing awesome stuff and maybe don't get the love they deserve, I'd say blueprint and Stereo fit into this category. I don't think you guys realize how small some of these brands actually are.

Next, thanks to 35th Ave!!!  love that someone gets this and is down to step up!

If any brands want to chip on on this you can PM me and send me stuff to give away! Or maybe hit up orchard and 35th and offer them some deals they can pass on to costumers!

The dudes that run RAW are two of the hardest working dudes I know.  They go out of there way to take care of everyone that supports them and everyone they support.  I haven't rode anything but a RAW board for the last 2 years, yeah the wood is amazing the shapes are better but supporting dudes who wake up everyday and work as hard as they do makes it that much easier to support them.

For those in west canada, antisocial was trying to get a bunch of shops(green apple, the source etc) to go in together on a big order of polar stuff, dunno if it happened but hopefully.

no Polar on that list eh ?
[close]

Polar is basically impossible to get in the U.S. unless you're willing to pay $100 for a deck. I want to support Pontus and Polar, but can't for that much.
[close]

thats about how much we pay for regular decks , you guys dont know how lucky you are 50 bucks a board , sheeet we could get 2 for what we pay in europe
[close]

Damn, that sucks. So will it still be that expensive if I want to buy a Polar when I'm in Europe this summer or will it be closer to 50 USD?
[close]

i would guess around 70euros.
[close]

Man, Europe sucks.
[close]
If you happen to be and buy one in Germany, it should cost around 50 Euros... not too expensive as the distribution of Polar is based in Germany

Yeah, they just got distro in the Netherlands/Belgium, so I'm planning on picking one up there. I'll throw down 50 Euro for a Polar.

I also remembered someone had a Seagle deck with a really sick graphic a couple months back.

[close]

hard working?  they work in a skateshop.  all they do is order shit on the phone and redistribute it to other shops.  Please give an example of some hard work they have done.  they've had some cool graphics but for the most part its pretty simple shit.  Both the owners own a house yet they still make most people who "ride" for them pay for boards.  I bought my only board directly from the owner and was charged 50 and some change.

If you wanna talk about hard working look at the dudes that run orchard.  They all worked second jobs for the first couple years to keep it goin.  They organized a lot of video premieres/art shows with free beer as well as a couple skate jams a year.  Support orchard!!  There shop decks are the same wood as RAW but 10 bucks cheaper.

Witchcraft Hardware would be also a good addition to the list. One of the best boards I had. Great shape, great wood, and cool graphics if you like Funeral French's artworks.  Been also riding ANTIZ for years now, Euro brand are always bit cheaper than US one, here in Europe.

I wanna take a sec to give these small shops a big shout out.

Josh from Theories ships faster to me than any big chain ever could

Orchard shipped to me in fucking AFGHANISTAN

and I just emailed Josh at Theories and Lance at Seasons this morning and was emailed back in less than 20 minutes from both of them. Personal emails too. If you don't have a small shop then support one that has an online one. You have NO reason not to whatsoever.

I remember Bro sending out this box over the winter. So awesome, hyped to hear you got it without any problems!

My local shop is The Escapist.  I haven't been there in a few years though since I just moved back from Louisiana.  You can order shit online from Escapist- they're repped pretty hard by Malto and they have an exclusive Sieben deck as well.

http://www.escapistskateboarding.com/ (http://www.escapistskateboarding.com/)

The $lave/Escapist deck is sick. I didn't see the Sieben one.
However, I'm very tempted to get another Magenta, the 8.125 shape is perfect, or an Open.

I've ordered stuff through the phone from seasons , orchard and 35th a bunch of times over the years. never been big on buying a board without checking it in person first but, damn these guys all do solid ass jobs helping you find exactly what you're looking for. pronto shipping and they all hook it up with extra goodies (ie a free Hopps tee from Orchard...thanks Armin, I still rock that shit!). oh yeah, and shipping is always pronto.

In an era of non-skaters working at mall shops and CCS setting up kid's completes upside down, if you don't have a local shop, go out of your way to support these guys. they've all been skating forever and are in it for the love.

big ups to all 3 shops for hooking it up for this pal in the past!

Blood wizard, anyone ever skated one of those boards? Plus there's a pretty small irish skate company started by two local guyyyys called Wireless and their boards are very very nice, skated one of their first ones and loved it but aint had one since.

I would love an abbe nyberg board but no matter how many times i check new soul's website there is no way to get a board delivered to the UK. :( this is my choice of putting my money where my mouth is and im being stopped already
anyone in the world on here able to get me a newsoul and paypal some money etc should hit me up :)

That or a nate board because he deserves my money after all these years of me SAYING id buy his pro model if it ever came up

nobody around me carries them. (http://i.imgur.com/9IAha.png)

I take it you aready tried calling your local shops and asking if they would call around to their distributors and see if they can get what you're looking for?

If so, and they can't help you, FTC is probably a good place to look, call the shop. If FTC can't help you check out the company website for a list of shops that carry them. Picking up the phone can still work wonders in the Internet age.

Because aside from being pressed there, they receive no distribution or other support from Dwindle. There are only a finite number of places to get pressed at. For example, I'm pretty sure Magenta is pressed by the same people as Deluxe and Kayo, but they have no where near the popularity or clout as DLX or Kayo, so supporting them will support the same woodshop as if you had bought DLX or Kayo, but rather than going to support companies that tons of other people already support, a smaller one gets some money.

Fair enough. Either way you're buying a DSM board tho. The whole supporting small companies is good but it seems pretty cosmetic. The whole company thing seems a bit dragged out. Good way to keep people buying, but do people really care that much about image anymore? As a consumer it all seems like a bit of circus to me. I don't care that much about all the details anymore, support who you can and buy good boards.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it would go well here too.

I'm gonna give a huge shout out to Blue Tile in Columbia, SC.

My nephew is 7 and just got into skateboarding.?  My mom told me about it and said she didn't want him riding some lame Wal-Mart board.?  I told her to go to the local shop and ask for some help with his size.?  I also told her to be prepared for the way local shops were (blow her off because she's in her 50s, not give a shit about a little kid) but that going local was always better.?  My mom took Simon, my nephew, there right when they opened and dude was just cruising up.?  He saw my nephew and said, "Are you waiting for me?!" and warmed right up.?  He took my nephew around, showed him the whole shop, let him touch the boards and hold them etc.?  Then he got him on a board that was good for his size, didn't rip my mom off with a bunch of bullshit that isn't going to have anything to do with a little dude's first board and sent them on their way.

That's a big deal to me- seeing how the shop dudes interact with the non-cool guys, the little dudes and the parents.

Yeah, that shit gets played and isn't cool, but remember, we all started somewhere.?  I'd much rather my nephew start off with a good experience than getting blown off for a regular.

Yeah man, that's what skatings about right there.

The guys who own lowcard own Strange Bird Distribution which does Blood Wizard, Think, Hubba, Lucky, Paradise Wheels and Heavy Wheels and Hardtimes Skateboards. So I guess lowcard does make decks.

I'll be skating this 8.25 bad boy next. It's by Philadelphia Skateboards, the first Arab board company and based in the Middle East. They're produced in Canada though.

Palace Lucien 8.0.. feels like a perfect shape

Could you (or someone else) post a pic so that you see the shape? Like one from the side to see the concave and one from the top to see how round nose and tail are

That might be asking too much though, so if not, could you just tell me? Does it have a real mellow concave or medium or steeper one? I really wanna try one out but no shops in Stockholm carries them.

Does any Swedish online shops carry Polar? Im from Norway, so shipping and price is no problem.

Sorry, I saw this kinda late but...

Alot of online shops in Sweden carry polar now, but these are probably your best bet for cheapest shipping to norway.

Hey Deekay,
I'm on my honeymoon right now but I get back home next week and I'll take a couple pics for you.
For me it's right in the middle, not too flat not too steep with a nice round nose but def not a huge one.

It says: "laq moo hayla eina" I believe and it is a typical Syrian way of saying "don't worry about it" when your friend asks you for a small favour.

Instrument is sick, Cincinnati's only real "premier" board company. I have a bunch of their clothes and stuff from when I visit back home, and have had a few of their boards, quality stuff. Always hoped Kelch would ride for them since he moved back there.

Although I do feel weird for quoting myself, if anyone is into those Facebook contests and wants to win this board, you can through sharing this facebook photo and getting a ton of likes.

Been eyeballing this Cockfight 8.25 for a while now and finally picked it up.

If you haven't skated a Cockfight, do yourself a favor and get one if you can. Some of the best wood out there.

Yeah, that's Sieben's. You can catch the large size piece in the background of some videos that show the Roger HQ. Glad to see it on a deck, especially rad that it's on a Cockfight.

Cockfight is the shit. I had their Kirby guest model (3 of them (2 for skating one for hanging)) and they were perfect.
