Primo Weardown
« on: January 08, 2020, 02:31:01 AM »
So I've been skating a lot of flat recently, and have really been trying to pop/stomp my tricks at speed. The only disadvantage to this is landing primo and wearing away both the axel and wheel nut, to the point I need to rethread my trucks every time I take my wheels off.

Anybody got any tips for preventing this?
Apart from the obvious skate better/dont land primo etc.

Skate more.
Besides that maybe you could put some extra washers so the nut would be little more on the "outside" hence protecting the axle thread.

As moonordie said, extra washers on the axle to keep the nuts flush. If you primo like that the nuts going to take most of the damage and save you the hassle of rethreading so much.

Never thought of the extra washers and a spare set of nuts. Huh. Good idea.

Begrudgingly replaced some trucks as the axle was completely goners from slamming down in primo etc.

Someone told me to put extra washers hangerside when I was 16, one of the best skate-hacks I’ve heard, it’s been solid 20years since without damages axles. Running 3 washers in 1 out atm on my Aces😄

Conical wheels helped me....a super narrow straight edged wheel like STF V2's the drawback is exposed nuts.....you get something wider with a more rounded side cut, you'll roll vs. smash your nut...

Always run 3-4 washers to keep your axle threads from being exposed, always.

When that reflex tool came out, I resurrected a couple dead trucks I had held onto that were all but lost to the ages (bearing cover wheels and pressure flips were not a good combo on my setups).

Just an FYI..
If you're having trouble getting a tap like the Reflex tool onto the end of your axle there is another way to fix the threads.
Thread restorer, thread restoring file, thread restoration kit..
Small files that come to a point on the side will work
There's also 5/16"-24 taps at the hardware store but price-wise Reflex is a better deal

Remember 24..
It's 24 TPI (threads per inch)
That's the side of the file you wanna use
Kingpin uses the same thread pitch
https://www.jbtools.com/kastar-2665-thread-restorer-file-8-sizes-11-24/

Hardware should be standard SAE but it's a low profile (or thin) nylon locknut, sometimes called nyloc.
5/16"-24
I guessing they use grade 8 now, like kingpins. But grade 5 might be ok.
Zinc plating will keep them from rusting. Stainless might be more wear resistant.
