What's up with Gullwing?
« on: May 07, 2019, 10:43:15 AM »
What's up with Gullwing trucks, anyone on here tried em? I've always been curious about em. Specifically the Pro III, cause they got a sick ass Barrier Kult truck. Obviously they aren't gonna be as good as Indys or Thunder, I know that for sure.

Gullwing Shadows are really good actually. I know nothing of Pro III's, but Ben Shroeder skates OG Magnesium Gulls. I've seen Wrex Cook ride the 3's on a pig style board, but I assume he's handicapping himself. They are owned by Sector 9 and don't have any well known team riders except Ben. So idk. I'd try the Shadows for something different, but I want them to put that Sector 9 cash into a good team.

Do they all have that notch out of the middle of the truck? That’s a terrible  idea.
The only people I know who buy Gullwings are fat old guys on a nostalgia trip.

I know an average weight old guy on a nostalgia trip who was skating them.  He preferred them to Indy because he seemed to have a knack for getting play in his Indy kinpins.    Whatever.

I had a set of them in 1987. They were my first trucks.  I don't need another pair.

The side winder was a very good truck. The notch was minimal.

Gullwing Street shadows, built in riser/tall plastic/light baseplate that never broke and minimal notch as well. They were good enough for Hensley so I nabbed a set, they skated great, one of my favorite trucks back then.

The modern “Shadow” is nothing like the above mentioned Shadow from back in the day. It’s basically an Indy Stage 10 with the shitty kingpin clearance, shitty turn, and even heavier. Only good thing about them is they’re a modern truck that will hold an inverted kingpin without the need for epoxy. Still some of the worst trucks I’ve ever skated, do not buy them. Can’t speak on the Pro III’s as I never tried them, but they look butt ugly and the groove in the middle looks like you’d just be grinding on the kingpin in no time.

Is pretty hard to drift away from the big 3 unless you're curious about trying Ace.
Gullwing never got my attention except for time time when I was a kid and some guy had some and everybody was like "wtf are those".

I’ve been looking at pictures of the composite (plastic) pro V trucks.

I’m surprised that no one has revisited this now that rails and hollow axles are back and popular.

The original street shadows were great.  Super light and durable.

Tried some street shadows once. Went right back to Indy. I knew a lot of vert guys that liked them back in like 87-89, but these guys also liked Tracker Ultralights

All I know is the Pro III’s were the heaviest damn trucks and the kingpin screamed like a dying cat on every grind. They were my first and I traded them for Trackers as soon as I could. Then I broke baseplates.
Anyway, they suck and don’t turn.

Old but not fat guy here, had a red pair as a kid, have a silver pair now that I've had for maybe a year and a half setup on a vert board.  Bought them as a novelty, wish they still came in red.

Yeah they're heavy and they don't turn as much as Indys, but neither was really a problem in old school style vert skating, everyone skated tight as fuck trucks on ramps anyways, and just loosened them up for bowl/pool and they carved just fine, still do.  Doesn't make a lot of sense to compare them to Indy or any other brand trying to be like Indy, they're just different.

I'd have to dig the setup out of the garage and I'm too lazy to do so.

Any specific question?

I bought a pair of the Gullwing BaKu trucks when I made a sweet BaKu curb set up years ago.

The Gullwings were fine, except for the divit in the middle. It was terrible and the kingpin bolt would always catch on whatever I was grinding.

So I guess, no, they weren't fine, they were actually pretty terrible.

The new Shadows are actually pretty good if you're looking for a low / wide truck that skates like an Indy.
8.5" and 9" at around 50mm high.
